Successful compromise in roominess and economy Hyundai’s first model in the popular super mini segment With the newly launched GETZ, the South Korean car manufacturer Hyundai is aiming at the European volume market. This is Hyundai’s first appearance in the popular super mini class. This segment accounted for nearly four million car sales in 2001, representing nearly 30% of the passenger car market. Hyundai plans to sell 190.000 GETZ’s on an annual basis, of which more than 50% for Western Europe, resulting in a 2,5% market share to begin with.

In recent years, Hyundai has stepped up its research and development activities. In case of the GETZ, this has contributed to an economically priced car, without any compromise in quality and with special focus on European car demands. Hyundai has revealed itself as a manufacturer following a global strategy without ever losing sight of regional requirements. The new Getz undoubtedly has everything on board to make it Hyundai’s trump card. Especially with a size comparable to that of its best-selling European rivals, coupled with equipment of a high standard for this class of car, a choice of compact, attractively and elegantly designed, aerodynamically 3-door or 5-door bodies, a wide range of petrol engines, a modern 1.5 litre CRDi common rail diesel, two types of transmission and a comprehensive safety and comfort package.

The styling of the Hyundai Getz stems from the TB (Talented “B”) concept car, which was unveiled at Tokyo Motor Show last year. Its new platform is the same as the one of the Clix design study, the compact four-wheel-drive 2+2 sports coupe that Hyundai Motor Company revealed a few weeks earlier at the Frankfurt Motor Show. The growing success of the constantly better-equipped super minis on the European car market determined the final concept of the new model.

Strong key objectives

From the outset the designers were fully aware that economy aspects alone do not determine the success of a super mini. Despite its relatively compact exterior dimensions, the Hyundai super mini should offer generous interior space, and comfortable and safe driving behaviour. By fulfilling these criteria, Hyundai designed the GETZ to satisfy the demands of the European customers. The Hyundai engineers and designers followed some key objectives for the development of the Hyundai super mini. Hyundai raised its product competitiveness by coupling a unique and attractive design with improved interior comfort and ease of entry and exit. Further, cab forward design with MPV characteristics combined roominess with compact external dimensions. Expanded wheelbase and wheel trade resulted in enhanced ride performance and safety. Overall quality was achieved as a result of in-depth research in the field of impact protection, NVH and durability.

Successful compromise

The new Hyundai looks pert and dynamic. Its short overhangs front and rear, in combination with the high roofline extending far to the rear, give more than a hint of a compact minivan. In the already broad Hyundai model range, the GETZ is positioned between Atos and Accent. Both the 3- and 5-door versions are 3.800 mm long, 1.660 mm wide and 1.485 mm high.

The wheelbase is identical in both cases: 2.450 mm. All this results in a practical minivan in which styling is targeted to European taste - a statement which applies to both the 3- and 5-door variants. The Hyundai super mini does not look like an overly muscular car. It is rather a successful compromise between conservative, modern and stylish.

Despite its relatively compact exterior dimensions, safety and practicality were chosen as the GETZ design theme. The challenge was to satisfy a practicalityoriented customer with a save car, and a safety-oriented customer with a practical car. The spacious and practical interior makes the GETZ an ideal family car, while its compact exterior adding to the manoeuvrability appeals to prospects looking for a second car as well.

This successful compromise is also expressed in the name of Hyundai's latest addition. As a compact and practical car, the GETZ possesses all required features to live up to the expectations of the demanding European customer. GETZ stands for "achieved by desirability, a link-up of GET and IT: "GET IT".

Supermini Segment Fulfills European Consumers’ Needs

Supermini is the key segment in Europe, accounting for 26% of the 15-million-unit market. The supermini segment represents diverse European cultures. Consumer demographics in the segment are widely varied, as are consumer tastes and desires. Hyundai’s experience in the European market in the past ten years has finally provided a platform for entering this highly

demanding segment. It promises a bright future for Hyundai Motor Company, as Hyundai exhibits assurance in taking a big stride to better understand Europe. In this regard, GETZ’s launching signifies getting nearer to diverse European consumers, providing a golden opportunity to better understand Europe through the consumers, and more actively introducing Hyundai to the European consumers.

Second, in terms of ensuring economy of scale, development of a new platform has opened a door for the birth of many other models derived from the same platform. It enables Hyundai to introduce 3-door and 5-door models, and provides a firm basis to attain superior position in developing small cars that will complement the current European market trend. The newly developed platform boasts heightened durability and strength to reinforce safety and reduce NVH (noise, vibration and harshness).

It reflects Hyundai’s determination in making vehicles with “European Value”, as the concept started with an understanding of European culture that puts emphasis on “basic value”. Third, Hyundai made the best effort to develop GETZ as an environmentally friendly model.

Hyundai is proud to present the new CRDi (Common Rail Direct Injection) 1.5-liter diesel engine, which completely changes the notion of diesel engines being a principal offender in polluting the air. In fact, Hyundai’s CRDi reduces carbon-dioxide emission by up to 50% compared with gasoline (petrol) engines. GETZ’s recycling rate of 89% is a good example of Hyundai’s active and voluntary involvement in preserving our environment.

Hyundai is grateful for this opportunity to understand and to be closer to diverse consumers in Europe with the introduction of GETZ, and would like to share the joy with all of you.

Hyundai has fulfilled four key objectives in the development of GETZ. First, GETZ features a unique and attractive design, combined with improved interior comfort and ease of entry and exit, which differentiates it from the existing competition.

Second, the forward position of the cowl enhances the overall exterior appearance, while the longer wheelbase and wider track result in better ride performance, stability and safety.

Product competency has been maximized by enhanced practicality, such as providing various interior storage compartments and improving operational control. Third, the powertrain has been improved to increase the reliability. Outstanding overall quality has been achieved as a result of extensive research in such critical areas as impact, NVH and durability.

Fourth, Hyundai has determined to make GETZ the industry standard in safety and preserving the environment, by not being satisfied with just meeting the regulation requirements. Enhanced durability goes hand in hand with improved impact safety, with GETZ achieving a 4-star rating or higher in front impact testing. It also surpassed Hyundai’s own requirements in side impact tests. One of the main focuses in developing GETZ was to achieve an 89% recycling rate and to deal with the emission regulations in a more active and progressive way.

Now we have earned an opportunity to reach a wider range of consumers in the European supermini segment with GETZ as our standard-bearer.

Potential Comes from Confidence

GETZ promises a gratifying experience surpassing that of the mid-size vehicle, not only in terms of the style, which weighs heavily in developing a small vehicle, but also in areas that are not always given the utmost importance, such as performance, interior package, safety and the environment.

Customers for GETZ are expected to include a wide range of ages, from the late 20’s to the mid 50’s. At the same time, GETZ’s appeal is expected to reach the consumer group that puts emphasis on both value and style, as well as the group that is concerned with safety and preserving the environment.

Design

Design is sometimes thought of as merely the shape and outline of the exterior and interior. Hyundai's perception of design is the actual process of unifying the different concepts provided by all the developers in each department.

Hyundai’s Philosophy : System Design

Hyundai pursues “system design” which is comprised of each developer’s goals and vehicle mechanisms, instead of just building the shape and outline of a vehicle. In this regard, our “design” is the beginning and the end of the concept for the vehicle.

Along with unique elements of symmetrical design, many aspects of asymmetrical beauty can be found in GETZ. A typical example of symmetrical elements in exterior design is the roofon antenna. Asymmetrical elements in the interior can be signified by the unique sunglass container or the hook for the plastic grocery bag, located on the front passenger seat back.

These unique and yet harmonious elements are a vital design point, which expresses the peculiar beauty and practicality of the supermini segment. In terms of design, GETZ presented a significant opportunity to reveal what the supermini segment is all about in the minds of Hyundai designers and planners. The answer to the question of what to pursue was indeed a simple one. Practicality and safety were chosen as GETZ’s design themes, and it was made certain that the European consumers were placed at the heart of this decision. Our challenge was to satisfy a practicality-oriented customer with a safe car, and a safety-oriented customer with a practical car. Our mission was to develop GETZ with an emphasis on both of the key values that European consumers want.

Exterior

GETZ follows the European style trend, to fit comfortably into its main market. The exterior leans more toward an edgy rather than a rounded style, by using simple lines and wide planes to convey the strength and spaciousness of its compact body. The uniqueness of GETZ’s exterior is expressed through putting more emphasis on the greenhouse graphic and different types of lamps. Moreover, the perfect harmony between the headlamp and radiator grille is a key styling point, while 185-series tires and 15-inch alloy wheels enhance the appearance of GETZ.

The forward location of the cowl identifies GETZ as a fresh and contemporary supermini design with compact exterior dimensions that can accommodate five occupants and a substantial amount of luggage.

  •  Exterior design keywords: Modern, Stable, Bold, Industrial
  •  Uniqueness through accented wheel arches, glass & lamps
  •  Forward cowl point provides compact exterior dimensions with roomy cabin

Interior

Maximum interior space

The wheelbase and width match those of the majority of its competitors. However, the GETZ offers one of the roomiest interiors in its class. Although the new Hyundai is shorter than some of its successful competitors, its long wheelbase contributes to a spacious interior. The interior, in which getting in and out is no problem, is comfortable and passengers enjoy an unobstructed all round view.

The driver enjoys a good driving position and the passengers have plenty of head- and shoulder room. Generous legroom means the rear passengers in particular can enjoy the best of a long wheelbase.

Two of the most outstanding features are the enormous storage capabilities and well-organized seat adjustment flexibility. There are lots of storage opportunities: storage compartments in the door panels, map pockets on the back of the front seats, an integrated pocket on the side of the passenger seat, a lockable glove box, an open storage area under the steering wheel and a storage facility under the front passenger seat. Cup holders, a penholder, a coin compartment and a storage compartment for sunglasses are also provided. On the passenger seat back, a hook is fixed for the paper bag full of products just bought from a supermarket.

Seat adjustment flexibility is proved by the 60/40 split rear seat, 3-way reclining with split double folding (cushion & back) function. According to the size and volume of the loading luggage the super mini can be reconfigured into a small van. Folding down the rear seat leaves the loading floor totally flat and a protected loading space can be created under the floor.

The interior design of GETZ was also created with the European supermini market in mind. The design concept is based on restrained lines and planes to convey simplicity, while seeking functionality and practicality through geometric forms. Utility and efficiency were given a priority, so the design would never lose its freshness. Efforts were made to create a warm and comfortable image for the supermini segment in general, using a material that is attractive and durable.

Notably, the driver-seat maneuverability and the rear-seat comfort of GETZ received the highest rating when compared with its competitors in a product clinic. This is a direct result of the fact that the functionality for the users was given the first priority in all of GETZ’s designing process.

Storage & Flexibility

Two of the most outstanding features in GETZ are storage versatility and seat adjustment flexibility. Determining the location and arrangement of 20 storage compartments was made possible by putting the designer in the driver’s and the passengers’ positions to thoroughly go over countless possibilities.

GETZ’s full-flat rear seats, along with extensive second-row legroom, are elements hard to find in other vehicles in the supermini segment. GETZ is ready to be transformed and adjust to many different usages at any moment, deserving its claim as being the most versatile supermini in the European market.

In this regard, the storage spaces in GETZ provide a passive and emotional component for the driver through a long-term relationship, while the flexibility achieved by seat variation is designed to actively react to spontaneous situations.

“ Space Wizard ”

GETZ’s seat functionality includes various seat cloth designs, driver-seat dual height adjuster, and passenger-seat integrated pocket. The seat system is designed so that it will satisfy the users under any situations. GETZ also features the “Space Wizard,” which includes a 60/40 rear seat, a three-way reclining mechanism with double folding (cushion & back) function and full-flat capability. The “Space Wizard” also creates needed space for GETZ according to the size and volume of the luggage.

Engines and transmission

A wide choice of power trains

With two body styles and equipment levels, good standard specifications and various safety and comfort features, Hyundai Motors aims to meet the most diverse requirements of the European super mini fans. Following the example of its most successful competitors, the Korean car manufacturer will also offer its super mini with a wide choice of engines and transmissions.

The future GETZ customer will have a choice of three multi valve petrol engines and a modern, torque-rich common rail diesel. All engines comply with Euro IV emission standards.

The 1.1 12-valve petrol engine, an upgraded version of the 1.0 engine, which has amply proven its excellent qualities in the Atos, is the smallest engine in the Hyundai GETZ range. This 4-cylinder MPI Epsilon engine is developed for low power preferred countries, employs Bosch engine control system and produces maximum power of 62ps.

The 1.3/1.6 liter engines in Alpha series are developed for consumers preferring more horsepower. The 1.3 petrol engine is well known from the Accent and develops a maximum power of 82ps. The 1.6 engine with a maximum power of 106ps has also earned its credentials.

On the European market, the success of a car such as the GETZ is determined by the availability of a modern and competitive common rail diesel engine. Hyundai is making use of the new diesel engine, which was introduced in the Accent and Matrix. This 1.5 CRDi develops 82ps and 170 Nm torque at 2000 rpm. Compared to its direct competitors, and with a cylinder capacity of 1493 cc, the GETZ 1.5 CRDi is the best in terms of power and torque.

The new Hyundai can either have a manual five-speed gearbox or an electronically controlled four-speed automatic. The automatic can be combined with the 1.3 and 1.6 gasoline engines.

Developed for countries that favor lower horsepower, the in-line 4-cylinder MPI Epsilon 1.1- liter (1086cc) engine produces maximum power of 62ps at 5,500rpm and 9.6kg•m of torque at 3,250rpm. It employs a Bosch electronic engine control system, with a relatively high compression ratio of 9.6 :1.

A long stroke provides good performance at low and mid-range speeds. The cylinders were designed for optimum combustibility, while the lightweight, high-strength engine block features lower noise and optimum cooling efficiency.

Hyundai developed the Alpha-series 1.3- and 1.6-liter engines simultaneously for GETZ. It is Hyundai’s intention to provide a vehicle that can be used not only for commuting within the city, but also for many other occasions, such as long-distance travel on weekends, with a 1.3-liter SOHC engine with 82ps and a 1.6-liter DOHC engine with 105ps.

In the case of the DOHC engine, compact combustion chambers have been achieved through a contained-angle valve arrangement, while a high compression ratio of 10 :1 has been achieved through a knock control system.

CRDi Diesel Engine

Hyundai’s diesel engine resolved many of the shortfalls that exist in the small diesel engines built by competitors. Through its second-generation common-rail direct-injection system, the new CRDi diesel engine developed by Hyundai will demonstrate the company’s technical capability to all the consumers who prefer diesel engines.

Showing excellent performance with reduced NVH and exhaust emissions, the diesel’s fuel consumption and horsepower show improvements of 15% and 24% over the previous diesel engines, respectively, delivering 80ps of maximum horsepower at 4,000 rpm and 18.6kgsm of maximum torque at 2,000 rpm. Its performance surpasses the same grade level diesel engine used by Toyota.

This demonstrates Hyundai’s current global strategy to provide various types of engines suitable for diverse markets in different countries, so that the European consumers will have a wide variety of engine choices.

Transmission

GETZ’s five-speed manual transmission employs double cone synchronizers for more precise shifting, reduced effort and heightened shift feeling. In developing a new four-speed automatic transmission for GETZ, the fundamental priorities were to achieve appropriate shift quality and quietness, while accomplishing a smooth and easy drive with the focus on the driver. Consequently, a wide set of gear ratios has been applied, and high fuel efficiency and high performance have been achieved.

The highest quality gear materials and new friction material have been used to increase durability and efficiency, while reducing noise. A four-speed variable hydraulic system has been employed to minimize the power loss.

Chassis and Safety

The GETZ wheel suspension is independent all round, and for damping Hyundai uses gas-filled shock absorbers on all four corners. Hyundai is applying intelligently noise-absorbing to minimize the noise, resulting in blocking and absorbing sound and vibration. Consequently this super mini enjoys excellent NVH conditions.

GETZ features a contemporary chassis design for optimum ride and handling characteristics. Suspension is via coil springs and MacPherson struts in front, with a torsion-beam axle in the rear. Body roll is controlled through a front stabilizer bar, while ride comfort is ensured through the use of oil-filled shock absorbers in front and gas-pressurized shocks in the rear.

GETZ is fitted with front disc and rear drum brakes. Four-wheel disc brakes with antilock (ABS) are available as an option. Steering is via rack-and-pinion, with power assist offered as an extra-cost feature on all models.

Standard tires on 1.1liter GETZ GL trim are 155/80R13 radials, mounted on 4.5J x13 steel wheels. For GLS trim, standard tires are 175/65R14 radials with 5.0J x 14 steel wheels and full-size wheel covers. Optional 14 - and 15-inch tires also are available, as are alloy wheels.Top tires are Michelin 185/55R15 radials.

Applying sound-deadening pads to key areas to minimize noise has resulted in excellent absorption of sound and vibration - among the best in the supermini segment. Engine, wind and road noise all have been reduced to levels typically encountered in larger, more expensive mid-size sedans. As a result, GETZ is near the top of its class in terms of quietness.

Safety

Complete safety equipment

A modern super mini must offer a lot in terms of complete safety equipment. The GETZ is coming up with HAIST (Hyundai Advanced Integrated Safety Technology) to protect the passengers and driver to the best possible extent. An excellent impact protection has been secured by the use of high tensile steel, one-piece side outer panels and side impact bars improving the rigidity of the body structure.

The front seats are fitted with pretensioners on the height-adjustable safety belts. The central rear seat is fitted with a three-point seat belt and a heightadjustable headrest. The rear seat has anchoring points for the attachment of child seats and the rear doors have child safety locks. The front passengers are protected by frontal airbags.

Both the driver side and the passenger side airbags are de-powered. The side airbag is a seat side mounting Thorax airbag type.

In combination with ABS, Traction control (TCS) is available and the ABS is in turn combined with an electronic brake force distributor (EBD). Using front discs and powerful low-maintenance drum brakes on the rear, the excellent braking properties of the GETZ are always guaranteed.

Hyundai Motor Company established a foundation in developing the safest vehicle by coming up with HAIST (Hyundai Advanced Integrated Safety Technology). The sole purpose is to be able to protect the passengers and driver to the best possible extent. An excellent impact performance record has been secured through extensive testing and computer simulation at

each level of development.

High-tensile-strength steel, comprising 58.3% of the total weight of the car, improved the rigidity of the body, and one-piece outer panels provided a safer body structure. Twisting and bending of the body is minimized at the time of the impact, protecting the cabin and its occupants.

Airbag System

Both the driver-side and the passenger-side front airbags are de-powered to avoid injuring children and smaller passengers when the airbags deploy. In addition, the seat-belt pretensioner, load limiter and terms of airbag deployment have been fine-tuned for optimum conditions to improve NCAP performance.

GETZ’s side airbags are mounted in the seat sides and are designed to prevent injuries to outof- position occupants and smaller passengers at the time of deployment. Moreover, the side airbags are designed to protect not only the occupant’s thorax but also the head at the time of the impact, satisfying the Euro NCAP requirements with lowered HIC (Head Injury Criteria) figures.

Environment-friendly non-azide inflators are used on all GETZ air bags. Hyundai’s efforts to improve the safety of its passengers have been recognized globally, with many of its products receiving higher ratings than the competition in the stringent safety tests in Europe and North America.
