2012 Hyundai Veloster

Rumored for quite a few years now, the 2012 Hyundai Veloster three-door coupe has made its world debut at the 2011 Detroit Auto Show. With an exterior design inspired by a high-performance sport bike, the new Veloster is a sporty coupe that delivers an impressive 40 mpg and the same functionality as any hatchback coupe out there.

The 2012 Veloster is powered by an all-new Gamma 1.6-liter four-cylinder engine, the smallest Hyundai engine to use Gasoline Direct Injection (GDI). Delivering an impressive 138 HP, the engine is mated to a standard six-speed manual transmission or an all-new, six-speed dual-clutch transmission (DCT). What’s mpressive about the Veloster is not only the 40 mpg fuel economy, but also its specific output: 86.3 HP per liter, better than any of its competitors.

For anyone that has been waiting for the new Veloster for a long time, the wait was definitely worth it. The equipment list will include technologies that will make the car more fun to drive than any other on the market.

UPDATE 08/11/11: Hyundai has released a fresh new batch of photos for the 2012 Veloster. It has about 30 photos and its definitely well worth the time you spend looking at ’em!

Hyundai Veloster

Inspired by a high-performance sport bike, the Veloster features distinctive black A-pillars that give the glass a motorcycle helmet visor appearance, an aggressive signature hexagonal front grille, hood scoop detailing, and unique Hyundai Hyundai -signature LED position lights. The rear gets dual centered chrome exhaust tips and a black lower fascia that complements the assertive front fascia. The car sits on a set of standard 17" alloy wheels. Further customization of the car can be had with a chrome grille surround, piano black highlights, fog lights, a massive panoramic sunroof and 18-inch wheel with painted inserts.

The list of exterior colors include: Century White, Ironman Silver, Triathlon Gray, Ultra Black, Marathon Blue, Electrolyte Green, 26.2 Yellow, Vitamin C, and Boston Red.

Getting access to the rear seat in a coupe is sometimes a difficult task, but Hyundai has taken this into consideration as well with a conventionally hinged door on the passenger side that provides safe and ready access to the surprisingly spacious rear seats. This door’s handle is hidden to maintain the coupe design.

The Interior

Hyundai Veloster

The same motorcycle inspired theme also continues on the interior. The center stack and controls resemble a sport bike fuel tank and incorporate an available push-button starter. The air vents are inspired by motorcycle tailpipes, and the floor console mirrors by the seat of a bike. A distinctive sporty look is being offered by alloy pedals and a leather wrapped steering wheel and shift knob.

The 2012 Veloster is being offered with Pandora internet radio that can stream internet radio from an iPhone, Android, or Blackberry. A 196-watt AM/FM/Satellite Radio/CD/MP3 audio system with six-speakers and iPod/USB/auxiliary input jack is offered as standard equipment, but Hyundai also offers a 450-watt Dimension Premium Audio system with eight speakers including an eight-inch subwoofer and external amplifier or a Touchscreen navigation system that also integrates a rear-view camera.

Engine and Drivetrain

Hyundai Veloster

Under the hood of the 2012 Veloster, Hyundai has placed an all-new Gamma 1.6-liter four-cylinder engine that delivers 38 HP at 6,300 rpm and maximum torque of 123 lb.-ft. at 4,850 rpm. Mated to a standard six-speed manual transmission or an all-new, six-speed dual-clutch transmission (DCT), the engine delivers an impressive 40 mpg (est). It also has one of the most impressive specific outputs out there; 86.3 HP per liter (for comparison’s sake, a 2012 Scion tC is 72.0).

The new engine features Dual Continuously Variable Valve Timing (D-CVVT) camshafts and hydraulic engine mounts that provide optimum power, efficiency, and refinement. Using CVVT on both camshafts has several advantages when compared to using it only on the intake camshaft including an improvement in performance (increased volumetric efficiency) and fuel economy (reduced pumping loss), and a reduction in hydrocarbon emissions.

For a fun to drive experience, the Veloster is fitted with a McPherson strut front suspension, coil springs, gas shock absorbers, and a 24 mm diameter front stabilizer. Hyundai also offers a sport-tuned electric power steering that adjusts instantly to changing driving conditions while improving fuel economy over a conventional steering system.

The 2012 Hyundai Veloster will go on sale in late 2011, with prices to be announced at a later date.

The Competition

Hyundai Veloster

As Hyundai itself said, the 2012 Veloster was built to target models like the Honda CR-Z , the Mini Cooper , and the Scion tC . The CR-Z is powered by an IMA hybrid system made up of a 1.5 Liter gas burning engine combined with an electric motor that provides an additional 14 HP for a grand total of 124 HP and 131 lb-ft of torque. It is priced from $19,200.

The Mini Cooper is powered by a 1.6 liter engine that delivers 121 HP. Priced from $18,275, the Scion tC is powered by a 2.5-liter inline four-cylinder engine with dual VVT-i that generates 180 HP.

Hyundai Veloster
  • Offers much more performance than any of its competitors
  • Impressive technology package
  • Blue Link comes as standard
  • Front design is "interesting"
  • Only one engine option
  • overall look does not impress

well, we couldn’t admit that Hyundai makes such wonderful cars. When talking about the Veloster, I don’t think that it would be a good car to choose. So, im going to contradict you papy_chulo, Honda Jazz or Mazda 2 would be a better other option.

Well, IMO, I think Veloster doesn’t have an interesting front at all. I don’t care about the impressive technology package. I bet the competitor is more powerful compare to this one.

Hyundai is still enjoying the design of Daewoo, that were currently becoming the rebadged Chevy’s! Actually Veloster is not a coupe

Veloster is not a coupe but rather a hatchback. I think this model would be the next economic Korean car for the next generation! Anyways, let’s rejoice that Daewoo have become rebadged Chevy!

That’s nice. Good thing is they totally ripped the taillights of Infiniti M. I think Hyundai should be
back on WRC with Veloster version instead of the Accent.

I like the interior design, which is consistent with the exterior styling. The materials quality is pretty good, but if you’re a stickler for soft-touch surfaces, the Veloster will disappoint you.

A 1.6-liter turbocharged unit is expected to follow this first offering, which will have a more robust output of 177 PS (131 kW/175 hp).

Wow, this car seems pretty good for a Hyundai. It’s a bit tenuous to call it more economical than a CR-Z with it’s target 40mpg and Honda’s "around 39mpg"

The 1st person would need to slide across the seats to the back of the driver’s seat to allow a second person into the rear. Sounds pretty inconvenient to do to me. On the positive side, the exterior design looks very nice and would definitely get one noticed on the road.

Did the person who designed this car firing on all cylinders when he came up with the "3-door" concept? Wouldn’t it be harder and take longer to get 2 people into the back seat with just 1 door to enter?

What’s impressive about the Veloster is not only the 40 mpg fuel economy, but also its specific output: 86.3 HP per liter, better than any of its competitors.

its roof line is almost the same as the Hyundai Sonata, Black roof with glass, isn’t that amazing to see a coupe like this rolling on streets. I would rather choose this than the Chevrolet Sonic, I looks more smarter, cute and of course fun to drive.

wow that is awesome, but it has some similarities with the Hyundai Tucson and Santa Fe, I like this car way better than the Honda Jazz and Mazda2. for sure choosing a sub compact car will be more difficult with the introduction of veloster.

kind of like it, but yeah, that front has to be changed. Just looks like they went to a junkyard and stuck a piece from another car on that grille, looks unfinished.

It’ll probably be the classic sideways shot going across the screen almost every car company uses. Not a demonstration of the cars performance

yes many are already craving to have this car, the CRDI engine is the latest car technology today, you got power and at the same time speed. not only that the noise and engine vibration was lessen to their engines. pretty amazing huh?..

cute nimble car, hyundai is really keeping up the phase in automotive, they bacame well known because of the safety and engine performance of their new car. and they also pioneered the CRDi engine which everyone love because of the power and speed.

Indeed the exterior looks allot with a Renault... but the interior is cool! smiley

That DI 1.6 will mean it will smoke the CRZ and get similar MPG, at multiple thousands of dollars less due to the lack of hybrid drivetrain.

I hope Hyundai has kept weight down and finally has its manual transmission feel sorted out, because if they’ve banished that shifting-with-rubber-bands feeling, this car should be pretty good fun.
