Hyundai ->ke201 decided to expand its Elantra->ke1391 lineup back in 2012 with a new coupe version. It featured a more aggressive design language than the sedan->ke142, a sportier interior, but just like the sedan it came with just one engine option.

The 2014 Elantra Coupe continues pretty much unchanged on the outside, but Hyundai made significant changes under the hood, where the model offers a new 2.0-liter Gasoline Direct Injection engine with 25 more horsepower and 23 pound-feet of torque more than the 1.8-liter engine it replaces.

Other revisions include updated, sport-tuned steering and suspension systems, a new wheels and a rear spoiler for a sportier look. For the interior, Hyundai adds in a leather-wrapped steering wheel and shift knob, plus a new Technology Package hits the option sheet to add in some extra features.

For the 2014 model year, the Elantra Coupe is priced from $19,600.

Exterior

The 2014 Elantra Coupe is offered with the same Hyundai Fluidic Sculpture design language as the rest of the Hyundai lineup, but taken to a more extreme level. Up front, it gets the usual hexagonal front fascia with jeweled, swept-back headlights and a unique black grille with a chrome surround.

When you'll look at the Elantra Coupe from the side, you'll notice a wedge-like sport coupe silhouette with deeply sculpted surfaces. Both the front and the rear wheel arches are more aggressive than on the sedan, while the A- and C-pillars frame a sharply tapered greenhouse.

On the rear, the Elantra gets a blacked-out rear diffuser valance, dual chrome exhaust tips and an integrated lip spoiler. For the 2014 model year, buyers can order the Elantra Coupe with LED taillights.

Drivetrain

Under its hood, the old 1.8-liter Nu engine is replaced by an all-new 2.0-liter, four-cylinder engine called that produces 173 horsepower at 6,500 rpm and 154 pound-feet of torque at 4,700 rpm. The engine is equipped with D-CVVT camshafts and hydraulic engine mounts for optimum power, efficiency, smoothness and refinement. When compared to the previous engine, the new 2.0-liter four-pot delivers 2 percent better fuel economy and 30 percent lower CO2 emissions. The engine is mated to a six-speed automatic transaxle with SHIFTRONIC manual control.

Competitors

Honda Civic Coupe

Honda unveiled the new Civic Coupe at the 2012 Los Angeles Auto Show, and with it came significant changes to the exterior and the interior. Unfortunately, Honda left the under-hood bits alone. As a result, the Civic continues with the same 1.8-liter, four-cylinder engine that delivers a total of 140 horsepower and 128 pound-feet of torque.

Prices for the Civic Coupe start from $18,190.

Kia Forte Koup

Kia unveiled the current Forte Koup at the 2008 New York Auto Show, and since then the model has remained pretty much unchanged.

The 2014 Forte Koup is offered with a choice of two engines: a 2.0 liter inline-four engine that delivers a total of 173 horsepower and a turbocharged 1.6-liter, turbocharged inline-four with an output of 201 horsepower.

Prices for the 2014 Forte Koup start at $18,600.

Conclusion

Hyundai Elantra Coupe was a nice addition in 2012, and the new 2.0-liter engine simply sweetens the pot. We just wish that Hyundai would add the 1.6-liter, turbocharged engine to the options list.
