2014 Hyundai Genesis
 
Hyundai unveiled their Genesis sedan back in 2008 with hopes of attacking the market being dominated by models like the BMW 5-Series and the Mercedes E-Class. It did okay for awhile, but then both German models saw some facelifts and the competition got fiercer. Hyundai shot back with a facelift version for the 2012 model year, but now they are working even harder for the second generation Genesis that will be unveiled in late 2013. Hyundai may have only waited one year after the facelift model to bring out the new generation, but the company has always had the shortest product cycle, so it shouldn’t be all that surprising. This allows Hyundai to keep its models fresh and with BMW and Mercedes in the loop of competition, they need to do so. As far as the new generation Genesis goes, Hyundai hasn’t offered any details on what changes the company will apply, but expect a new design language. It won’t be completely new, but will feature major changes on the front grill - expect a grille similar to the one found in the new Genesis Coupe, new headlamps, a new bonnet, and new bumpers. The interior will also receive a series of new technologies. In terms of power, the next generation Hyundai Genesis will feature the same, albeit updated, engines with improved power outputs and fuel economy. In 2010, for the 2011 model year, Hyundai tore down the Sonata’s bland mold and completely rebuilt it. This redesign produced one of the best looking Hyundai sedans to date, and the trend has continued with nearly every Hyundai since. Well, 2014 will mark the fourth year that the Sonata has donned this look and compared to some of the newer Hyundai vehicles – except the Accent – the Sonata now looks outdated. Not necessarily old, but it simply doesn’t fit Hyundai’s new, more aggressive styling. Hyundai plans to take care of this issue before this body style hits five-years old, as the budget automaker’s CEO announced that the Sonata will receive an upgrade in 2014. Taking a look at the 2012 Sonata, which competes with the Toyota Camry, Honda Accord and Nissan Altima, the Sonata’s drivetrain options stand tall. With a 2.4-liter four-cylinder engine that cranks out up to 200 horsepower, while getting 35 mpg on the highway, and a 274-horsepower, 2.0-liter engine that gets 34 mpg on the highway, the competition just can’t hang with it. All Hyundai needs to do is a mild facelift to keep buyers interested in the Sonata. As of yet, there is no mention of what direction Hyundai will go with the Sonata. With its accounting for 35% of all Hyundai sales in 2011, chances are the Sonata’s upgrade won’t be too drastic. Then again, Hyundai has been pulling some rather interesting stunts lately, like releasing the rather un-Hyundai-like Equus luxury car and sporty, innovative, and economical Veloster. They sure have come a long way since I bought my brand new 1999 Accent for a cool $9,000. We will continue to provide updates on this future upgrade as details roll out, so stay tuned. Concept cars have always been an integral part of any major auto show. These events give automakers an opportunity to showcase some of the most outlandish and over-the-top vehicles we’ll ever see. Now that doesn’t mean that these concepts will translate to production. Actually, very few do with most of them forgotten long after the auto show ends. At the 2012 Geneva Motor Show, we saw a lot of concept cars that piqued our curiosities one way or the other. Some were fancy, some were strange, and some just completely blew us away. In the end, the concept cars at the 2012 Geneva Motor Show delivered on the promise of providing some edge and flavor to the proceedings. On the list below, we’ll show you all of the concepts that caught our eye, and if we do say so ourselves, some of those are just too awesome to not be sent to the production line. The 2012 Geneva Motor Show is still about one week away, but most of the auto makers have decided to offer the first details on their line-up ahead of time. Hyundai is taking its turn with the unveiling of the first image and details on the i-oniq Concept - an electric sports hatchback with a range-extending petrol engine. Hyundai said that this concept is showcases "new technology and design which present an impression of the company’s future thinking." The i-oniq Concept is about 4.4 meters long and offers interior space for four occupants. On the exterior, the concept is defined by gentle feature lines and a muscular surface treatment, as well as a "penthouse roof" and LED headlights. Under the hood, Hyundai has placed a 1.0 liter 3-cylinder petrol engine that is combined to a lithium ion electric motor which produces 109 HP. In electric-only mode, the i-oniq has a range of 75 miles. With assistance from the petrol engine, it can travel up to 434 miles producing just 45 g/km of CO2 in the process. 2013 Hyundai i30 Wagon
The second model in Hyundai’s new i30 family will be making its world debut next month at the 2012 Geneva Motor Show. The new i30 wagon will borrow everything from its five-door hatch brother, except, of course, for the fact that its overall length will be increased by 185 mm and it will offer increased trunk space: from 378-liters to 528-liters. The Hyundai i30’s exterior will be distinguished by Hyundai’s hexagon-shaped grille and jewel-like headlamps. On the side, it has received a pronounced swage line that runs horizontally and rises all the way to the rear lights. The rear windscreen wraps around the D-pillars, increasing interior luminosity and benefiting visibility. Under the hood, Hyundai will place the same engine line-up found in the hatchback version: three petrol engines and three diesel engines with power ranging from 90 to 135 HP. The current Hyundai Genesis Coupewent on sale in United States dealerships back on February 26, 2009. It was a pretty cool sports car powered by a 2.0-liter DOHC inline four-cylinder that delivered 212 HP and 217 lb.-ft. of torque, but in 2011, Hyundai tried making it even better by adding a new version: the Coupe 3.8 R-Spec. This new coupe is powered by a 3.8 liter V6 engine that delivers 306 HP, which is obviously better than the previous model, but apparently, that addition simply wasn’t enough for Hyundai. Now, they’ve brought the facelift version of the Genesis Coupe to the 2012 Detroit Auto Show, in its American version. The new 2013 Genesis Coupe sports more aggressive coupe styling, complemented by an improved interior and design. It will be available with 4-cylinder and V6 engines, both of which benefit from significant technology enhancements, a 3.8-liter V6 engine with sophisticated direct-injection technology, and a 2.0-liter turbocharged engine that has been upgraded to a more precise twin-scroll turbocharger and larger intercooler. UPDATE 02/14/2012: Hyundai has announced today prices for the new Genesis Coupe that will go on sale this March. Prices will range from $24,250 for the 2.0T model to $34,250 for the 3.8 Track. Sitting alongside the Elantra Coupe, at the 2012 Chicago Auto Show is Hyundai’s competitor for models like the Ford Focus, Mazda3, and Volkswagen Golf. The Elantra GT is the third vehicle in Hyundai’s 7/11 product initiative (seven new or redesigned models in the next 11 months), next to the the Veloster Turbo and the refreshed Genesis Coupe. The new Elantra GT features the same 1.8-liter Nu four-cylinder engine with 148 HP and 131 lb-ft of torque as the sedan and the coupe variants. The engine is mated to a standard six-speed manual transmission and delivers a fuel economy of 28 mpg city and 39 mpg highway. The Elantra GT features the same "Fluidic Sculpture" which includes an aggressive profile and low overall height, as well as sleek side mirrors. The interior offers comfortable seating for five people or can accommodate four passengers with long items such as golf clubs or snowboards. Last year, Hyundai unveiled the new generation Elantra sedan - a model that featured an impressive exterior design language and a new 1.8-liter inline-four that producing 148 HP and 131 pound-feet of torque. Now, Hyundai has to unveil a new Coupe variant at the 2012 Chicago Auto Show, which the company hopes will compete with the Honda Civic Coupe model. Just like the sedan, the new Elantra Coupe will be powered by a 1.8-liter four-cylinder engine with 148 HP and 131 lb-ft of torque. Mated to a six-speed manual transmission, this engine delivers a fuel economy of 29 mpg city and 40 mpg highway. The new model will be distinguished by a unique "Fluidic Sculpture" two-door coupe design language that includes a hexagonal front fascia with jeweled swept-back headlights, a blacked-out rear diffuser, and much more. There aren’t a lot of cars in this world that probably gets less hype and appreciation than the Hyundai Elantra. Hard to believe, too, considering that the Elantra is a good enough car to win the 2012 North American Car of the Year of the award. So in its own little way, the Hyundai Elantra is celebrating its award in a rather unique and potentially annoying way: riding a victory lap in the neighborhood with its horn in full blast exclaiming its awesomeness. Sounds like the kind of thing that gets people to throw rocks at your car, but in this instance, we don’t’ blame Hyundai and the Elantra for pulling off this ad, especially since the Elantra deserves all the recognition it can get for being one of North America’s best automobile purchases. Say whatever you want about the Elantra, but make no mistake, it’s a car worthy of respect and - in this case - a victory lap around the neighborhood. Since the Super Bowl only comes out once a year, the race to have the best auto commercial is usually fast, feverish, and packed with plenty of attention-grabbing scenes. This year, Hyundai is rolling out an armada of ads to keep itself relevant to viewers during the Big Game. One commercial, in particular, features the Hyundai Genesis Coupe, which, for all of it’s outstanding qualities, possesses an equally strong trait that just might be the most important of them all: it has the ability to bring a man back to life! In this ad, a man is driving his Genesis Coupe with his "pops" riding shotgun and giving him the whole spiel on how to be successful in life. In the middle of the latter’s soliloquy, he ends up getting a heart attack, to which the driver decides to use his sports car as an oversized defribillator, alternately accelerating and braking the car until pops comes back to life. As soon as he does, he finishes off his advice to young Jensen, oblivious to the fact that he came this close to heading over to the while light, all thanks to Anderson and his "pulse-pounding" Genesis Coupe.
