You may recall my first drive experience with the all-new 2015 Hyundai Sonata. It took place in the heartland of Alabama, along I-65 at Hyundai’s Montgomery Assembly Plant. There I spent time in with all three Sonata models: the 1.6-liter, I-4 Turbo in the Eco model, the 2.4-liter, I-4 volume engine, and the sportier, 2.0-liter, I-4 Turbo. All three made a positive impression during the short routes over the busy afternoon. A more extended test was in order.

I recently spent a week behind the wheel of a Sonata 2.0T painted in Urban Sunset, much like the tester I had in Montgomery. Even the options list — or lack thereof — looked the same. Carpeted floor mats costing $125 was the only added extra my recent ride had. That’s not altogether terrible, as the Sonata comes with a healthy list of standard features, including the proximity key entry and push-button starting, Blind Spot Detection with Rear Cross Traffic Alert, a five-inch touchscreen in the dash with SiriusXM and Bluetooth connectivity, HID headlights, and LED taillights. The most noticeable feature missing is navigation, but it is available.

The Sonata proved to be a helpful tool in the week’s chore list — a list that included a trip to IKEA, hauling four other passengers around town, and jaunting down the highway while riding solo. So how did the Hyundai handle the week? Click past the jump to find out.

With all the attention directed towards the unveiling of the next-generation Mazda Miata , Hyundai threw a little curveball our way with the release of this rendering depicting the all-new i20 Coupe. Yes, the little i20 is getting a three-door version to complement the recently revealed five-door model!

Hyundai hasn’t divulged any details surrounding the i20 Coupe, which is probably its way of teasing of what’s to come. Sneaky, sneaky, Hyundai.

To its credit, the Korean automaker did give a brief description of what we can expect from the i20 Coupe. For one, it retains the i20’s long hood while adding a few elements to justify its sports style billing. The Coupe , it turns out, will get a sharply raked roofline and a distinctive roof spoiler. Those two new elements are likely meant to enhance the car’s sporty appearance, which makes me wonder if this model will bear some resemblance to the Hyundai Veloster.

It’s definitely something that we can all look forward to. Hyundai’s promising more details "in due course," which is probably the automaker’s way of saying that the i20 Coupe will find its way to a major auto show soon.

Hyundai is taking a big-screen blockbuster approach in its next advertisement for the all-new 2015 Genesis sedan. The short, nine-minute film takes an unusual approach to vehicle advertising in making the story more about the people within the storyline, while the Genesis plays a less major role.

The luxury sedan still gets its moments in the spotlight in several scenes, including the use of its proximity key and automatic truck release, along with some intense driving scenes.

The short film is directed and produced by a new generation of filmmakers, the 20-something millennials who embrace new technologies and ways of doing the impossible through computer animation. Though the graphics get a little cheesy at times, the overall film showcases the Genesis pretty well. It’s reminiscent of what BMW did more than a decade ago with its short series of films showcasing several of its vehicles.

Hyundai’s theatrical plot circles around a man and his sick wife and a mysterious doctor who is running some unorthodox testing. As it turns out, the husband must use his 2015 Hyundai Genesis to save the girl and defeat the evildoers without being taken out first.

Turns out the Genesis makes a pretty good get-away car.

Hyundai appears to be considering entering the luxury crossover market to compete with the Lexus RX , Audi Q5 , and Cadillac SRX . That’s according to an interview Edmunds.com had recently with Hyundai CEO Dave Zuchowski.

However, Zuchowski says the main problem with creating a luxury SUV would be having a place to sell it. “We made a conscious decision on our premium products not to establish a secondary distribution channel,” he says. “And that decision, and we absolutely think it is the right decision, has some flow-through impact on products.”

So in other words, Hyundai doesn’t think a premium SUV or crossover would sell well within conventional Hyundai dealerships. The Korean automaker is already traveling down this bumpy road with its classy Genesis and Equus sedans, products that far exceed the Hyundai brand perception held by the general public. Hyundai does have that "dealership within a dealership" concept in use where the premium products are separated from the non-premium vehicles, but apparently the concept isn’t working well enough for it to add an SUV to the Genesis and Equus side of the showroom.

Regardless of the selling method, the SUV itself would likely be based on the seven-passenger Santa Fe . It would likely keep the same underpinnings and powertrain, but have completely unique styling and an interior that matched the luxuriousness of the all-new 2015 Genesis sedan.

Zuchowski and Hyundai appear to be stuck behind their decision to remain a singular brand and not create a secondary luxury label like Toyota’s Lexus or Nissan’s Infiniti . Zuchowski uses the example of Toyota and Lexus in selling mechanically similar products with different levels of refinement. "The RX is basically the Toyota Highlander and they can charge a premium for that vehicle because they are sold in different showrooms," Zuchowski says.

For now, Hyundai’s plans for rolling out a Lexus RX competitor are on hold, with Zuchowski implying that once a sales method has been reached, the automaker could move forward.

The Hyundai i20 was launched in 2007 as a three- and five-door hatchback to sit between the i10 city car and the i30 compact. The i20 replaced the aging Hyundai Getz on most markets, but it didn’t make it to the United States, where the Korean manufacturer sells the slightly larger Accent hatchback instead. Underpinned by an all-new platform developed by Hyundai Europe, the first-gen i10 was available with a wide range of inline-four engines. The gasoline units displaced between 1.2 and 1.6 liters, while the diesel mills came in 1.1-, 1.4-, and 1.6-liter sizes. Output began from 74 horsepower and topped 126 ponies in the more expensive trims. Moving into the 2015 model year, Hyundai is finally introducing the second-generation i20, a completely redesigned hatch meant to spur the company’s presence in Europe’s crowded B-segment market.

Scheduled to be unveiled at the 2014 Paris Motor Show in October, the 2015 Hyundai i20 was also developed at the company’s European technical center in Germany. Likewise, the second-generation supermini won’t make it across the Pond, where we will have to settle for the fourth-generation Accent, which is already a four-year-old model.

Although the Paris Motor Show is still a couple of months away, Hyundai has released preliminary photos and details of the redesigned i20. Read on to find out more about the second-gen compact.

These days, Hyundai is one of the top brands. With several very good — some excellent — cars, Hyundai is now a legitimate competitor with the big boys. A major contribution to the brand’s recent success has been the Genesis sedan and coupe, introduced in 2009 and 2010, respectively. While they share the same name, both cars are vastly different. The sedan is a large, rear-drive luxury model meant to take on the best mid-level offerings from Lexus , BMW and Mercedes-Benz , while the coupe, also rear-drive, is smaller and vastly sportier, intended to sway buyers away from the Mustang , Camaro , and Nissan 370Z .

Hyundai has updated the Genesis coupe recently, and now the 2.0T produces an impressive 274 horsepower, while the big-daddy 3.8-liter, V-6 version now puts out a whopping 348 ponies. Both a six-speed manual and Hyundai’s in-house eight-speed automatic transmission are available in both models.

However, according to Autoblog, the 2.0T version will be dropped for the 2015 model year. Apparently, Hyundai wants to convey a premium image, and feels the V-6 version is the only one that will cut it. I tend to disagree, as small, turbocharged (read: efficient) motors are the latest fad these days.

While the updated design for 2013, featuring upgraded power ratings and styling updates was definitely noteworthy, expect a full redesign for the 2016 model year, with V-8 power from the company’s proven TAU V-8 engine.

Launched for 2005, the Tucson compact crossover was Hyundai’s answer to the Toyota RAV4 , Honda CR-V , and the Ford Escape . The Tucson did surprisingly well its first year, selling over 60,000 units in the U.S. alone. The small crossover slotted under Hyundai’s larger Santa Fe and Veracruz crossovers. Sharing its platform with the Elantra sedan and Kia Sportage crossover, the Tucson proved to be a decent vehicle for moving people and their stuff. Hyundai launched the Tucson’s second generation for 2010 that included a more stylized look and more efficient engines. The 2015 Tucson is part of Hyundai’s latest experiment with hydrogen fuel cell technology. The new hydrogen system totally replaces the Tucson’s gasoline engine with a power system that runs only on hydrogen, and only emits water vapor and heat as an exhaust.

While the 2015 Tucson isn’t Hyundai’s first attempt at hydrogen fuel cell vehicles, it’s Hyundai’s first successful attempt. The Korean automaker is currently leasing Tucson FCV in select areas of California, including Los Angeles. For $2,999 down and $499 a month, owners can drive their Tucson FCV without the cost of refueling, as Hyundai is including free hydrogen fill-ups at its ‘At Your Service’ maintenance centers.

Is it possible that the Hyundai Veloster ’s run ends after only three years of production? Hyundai has made no indication on an answer to that question, but according to GoAuto, there has been a lot of internal debate on whether the Veloster lives to fight another generation or concludes a short-lived run after the facelifted model arrives in 2015 or 2016.

It’s a surprising development for a car whose sales numbers haven’t exactly caught fire. But the Veloster has developed a unique following among fans of the sports hatch , many of whom have come to love the vehicle and treated it as an outlier model of a company known for its high-volume models.

A Hyundai executive told GoAuto that no decision has been made as of yet and there are still enough influential voices on both sides to warrant more time to debate the Veloster’s fate.

For now, a facelifted model is in the pipeline with Hyundai planning to adapt its current design language on the sports hatchback . If sales pick up on this model, then that could help Hyundai keep the Veloster around. But the fact that discussions are taking place on the sports hatch’s fate is a little disconcerting, especially for those like us who have grown quite fondly of Hyundai’s little pocket rocket.

Sometimes when you set out to prove something, the proof often times just isn’t enough for some folks. Naysayers and slanderers just eat your lunch. So it seems Hyundai has taken the extra step – or six in this case – to ensure the car-conscious public is well aware of the 2015 Genesis ’ latest convenience safety features.

So to demonstrate the Genesis’ Advanced Smart Cruise Control and Lane Keeping Assist system, Hyundai hired stunt driver Buddy Joe to lead the pack of driverless, yes driverless, Genesis sedans around an oval loop then subject them to a rather sudden stop. But executing the driverless car situation was a little more involved than one might think.

Lined up one after another, the drivers of all six Genesis sedan turned on both the smart cruise control and the lane keeping function before proceeding to exit the vehicle. Yep, the stunt drivers make use of the Genesis’ generous panoramic sunroof by climbing through it, only to jump to a moving semi truck pulled along side.

Without spoiling all the video’s fun, I can say it’s a pretty impressive stunt that seems hard to fake. The cars all followed each other perfectly (though seemingly at slow speeds) until the semi truck slammed on its brakes. Driverless, each car came to a complete stop without nary an issue. Nicely done, Hyundai. I’m impressed.

A massive robot swings its single arm left, and picks up the entire shell of a Hyundai Sonata, lifting it skyward, twisting it around, and setting down perfectly in place on a jig where more robots angrily attack it with welding guns. Sparks fly as more pieces find their way into the new 2015 Hyundai Sonata.

As you may have read in my review of the all-new 2015 Sonata, my recent time behind the wheel of Hyundai’s newest car also came with a quick spin around the automaker’s Alabama assembly plant. The behind-the-scenes tour weaved its way past massive robots, around long conveyer belts, and over thousands of square feet of floor space all dedicated to building cars.

Scenes like that above happen all over the three-million square-foot facility, around the clock and every day of the week. The Hyundai Motor Manufacturing Alabama plant is responsible for making nearly half of every Elantra and Sonata sedan wandering American roads and every single Sonata Hybrid sold in the States. Each and every day, another 1,000 new Hyundais roll off the assembly line thanks to the work of some 3,000 workers and over 400 robots.
