Much like Subaru, the Korean car maker Hyundai had a plethora of its Genesis Coupes on display at the 2009 SEMA show, however there were also quite a few examples of sport compact in other people’s displays both inside and out of the Las Vegas Convention Center. Now we have already shown you which ones we felt were the finest examples of the new two door rear wheel drive sports car, being the turbocharged Greddy version inside the ropes and the AQ Motorsports version all the way over in the Rotora booth.
Back at the Hyundai display, representing everything from the mundane to the insane Hyundai had a Tskuba White R-Spec version, a model that is easy on the pocketbook and has just the right parts to make it a true driver’s car; items like a turbocharged four cylinder engine, 19 inch wheels and a limited slip differential. Hennessey was in attendance with their Carbon Coupe and while the turbo V6 was impressive it looks like body work classes have been postponed until next semester at the Tuner School. Now Rhys Millen is the veteran in the Hyundai booth after last year’s RMR Genesis Coupe show car, so this year the bar was raised and the engine was moved back a few feet so that all eight cylinders could fit between the fenders. Although the new RMR Genesis Coupe was the most mechanically impressive vehicle of the group, the car’s one off front end was a bit too different, however the side mirrors, scoops and genuine carbon fiber body panels were quite nice.

It seemed that everywhere you turned at the 2009 SEMA Show there were at least a few modified Hyundai Genesis Coupes in your field of vision. However there was one tuned two door that stood head and shoulders above the rest, taking a page out of last year’s playbook, the Korean car maker hired a team of expert Japanese tuners to make the most out of their newest sport compact, and if you thought that the HKS Genesis Coupe from the 2008 SEMA Show was jaw dropping, then Greddy’s take on the Genesis Coupe will leave you absolutely breathless with its aggressive body kit, very fashionable vinyl and the mystery of what’s inside.
The Greddy Genesis coupe was put together with the typical array of parts from the Trust catalog like an Airinx intake filter, type RZ blow off valve, a full auto turbo timer and the legendary Profec B electronic boost controller. However a few of the more impressive parts that Greddy came up with for the new world engine based turbocharged four cylinder engine; like a larger 18 G turbocharger being fed hot air from a four into one tubular exhaust manifold, a high capacity intake manifold, Greddy’s latest in ECU technology the e-Manage to finish off the bolt on upgrades housed inside the engine bay.
The Genesis Coupes stance was adjusted to perfection thanks to a set of Greddy Type-S coilovers and had 20 pistons worth of brake calipers housed inside of a set of gunmetal grey Volk Racing TE-37 wheels. As impressive as those last few items might have sounded, none did as much for both performance and style of the modified Genesis Coupe as the Greddy Spectrum Elite exhaust peaking out underneath the new rear diffuser with its quad tip configuration and anodized blue finish. Once again Greddy has created an automotive masterpiece using their catalog of proven go fast parts without the need for unnecessary bling and Hyundai laid the foundation for them to do it.
One sport compact that was well represented at the 2009 SEMA Show was the Hyundai Genesis Coupe, and sitting pretty in the Rotora booth was this version from AQ Motorsports. This Genesis Coupe was wearing little more than a few well appointed upgrades to the body including a vented carbon fiber hood and trunk from Carbon Creations as well as a stylish ground effects package that incorporates a pronounced wind molded into the front bumper, a set of lower hanging side skirts and a rear diffuser. The AQ Motorsports Hyundai rides on a set of 19 inch forged rims from Rays Engineering with the obligatory Rotora big brake upgrade underneath.
Remember that outrageous parking mishap that occurred a week ago in Ontario, Canada involving a BMW X5 driving on top of two cars?
It turns out that the surveillance video capturing the whole incident has been a popular video over the Internet with over 1.5 million people having watched the incident. One of the unfortunate victims of the accident was one Todd Jamison, who, if you watch the video again, owns the white Hyundai Elantra that the X5 unceremoniously flattened.
The sad part is, Jamison just finished off paying for the car a month ago so you could imagine his dismay seeing his freshly paid-for Elantra get flattened beyond repair. Fortunately, the folks from Hyundai motors Canada got hold of the video and decided to lift up Mr. Jamison’s spirits by
giving him a brand-new Hyundai Elantra Touring. It’s a pretty nice gesture from Hyundai and – as you can see in the video – something that Todd Jamison didn’t see coming.
As far as the woman responsible for the mishap, we don’t know if she felt guilty and wanted to turn herself in or she was just plain stupid returning to the scene of her crime because the day after the accident, she came back to Extreme Fitness and was identified by one of its employees. From what we’ve gathered, Little Miss Destruction Derby has been charged with failing to remain at the scene of an accident.
Don’t count out the imports at the 2009 SEMA Show just yet, because Hyundai is bringing another one of its customized sports coupes to Las Vegas. The Rides Magazine creation is one hot tamale and look like it will contend well with the V8 powered sleeper from RMR and Greddy’s tunerGenesis Coupe.
This two door rear wheel drive Genesis will be wearing a Sarona Design body kit and is painted in Porsche 911 GT3 RS orange. The Genesis Coupe’s interior will feature a pair of racing buckets to keep the passengers riding up front in place on the twisties and a Memphis Car Audio sound system to keep thos e in the back entertained. If you pop the hood of the Rides Magazine Genesis Coupe you will find a 2.0 Liter four banger being fed pressurized air from a Turbonetics turbocharger that is cooled by a Spearco intercooler and then spit out the bakc through a GReddy full turbo back exhaust. Just like the HKS Genesis Coupe that we finally got to see up close, this bright orange Genesis Coupe should look better in person than we ever expected. We can’t wait to get to Las Vegas.
The list of customized Genesis Coupes that will be presented at SEMA just keeps getting longer and longer, because Hyundai Motor America has teamed up with the American tuning house Hennessey Performance Engineering and HPE’s intensive 14 week Tuner School program have just added their names to the roster. The hot rod Genesis Coupe is the perfect example of a modern day sport compact with its attractive styling, rear wheel drive layout and robust engine lineup; the new car is exactly what graduates of the high performance educational program will be dealing with after they complete their instructions, so what better vehicle to display at the world’s greatest aftermarket car show than a matte black and carbon fiber Genesis Coupe.
The Genesis Carbon Coupe will feature a Hennessey Custom Single Turbo Setup consisting of a Precision 66 mm ball bearing turbocharger, Tial blow off valve and a 44 mm wastegate to keep the boost under control. Meanwhile an HKS boost controller will regulate the amount of charged air going into the engine and an upgraded fuel pump and injectors will ensure that there is enough go juice going into the combustion chamber to keep things from going kaboom. The HPE Genesis Coupe is currently estimated to be producing a maximum output of 500 HP and 465 lb-ft of torque. This much power should be good enough to launch the two door Genesis from 0 to 60 MPH in just 3.9 seconds and eclipse the quarter mile in just 12.5 seconds.
The Genesis Coupe R-Spec is not the only model Hyundai will be presented with at SEMA Show. In Cooperation to Street Concepts they will show a customized Genesis sedan. What is more important is that graphic designer Courtney Mason will paint a one-of-a-kind graphic on a Pearl White Street Concepts Genesis sedan live at the show.
The Street Concepts Genesis exterior will be outfitted with 3M carbon fiber roof panels, black chrome accents by Chrome Tech, and upper and lower spoilers from RKSport. The vehicle will boast upper and lower E&G front mesh grilles also finished in black chrome by Chrome Tech. Interior features include custom suede and piano black detailing as well as carbon fiber dash accents. It will sit on 22-inch wheels featuring Chrome Tech black chrome wheel centers with black lips and General Exclaim UHP tires.
Thanks to Eibach lowering springs, Brembo brakes and a Magnaflow cat-back exhaust, the 4.6-liter V8 engine will deliver an impressive 375 hp.
Hyundai has some big things in store for the 2009 SEMA show. Last year the Korean car company commissioned a few tuned Genesis Coupes from aftermarket notables like HKS and RMR, well this year one of the only automobile manufacturers not in the red will show off the R Spec Genesis Coupe, an enthusiast model, at the world’s largest aftermarket car show in Las Vegas. The $23,750 Genesis Coupe comes complete with everything you need to have fun behind the wheel while eliminating some of the more expensive features that you don’t.
The R Spec is powered by the familiar 2.0 Liter turbocharged four cylinder engine pumping out a total of 210 HP and is mated to a close ration 6 speed manual transmission. The tuner Coupe makes the most of Hyundai’s Track Package and includes the upgraded suspension, 19 inch rims, Brembo brake calipers and a limited slip differential to ensure that the power is laid down evenly across the rear axle and that drifts are executed with smokey perfection.
The tuner friendly R Spec Genesis Coupe does ditch a few features like Bluetooth hands free connectivity, automatic headlights, cruise control, chrome interior accents and steering wheel mounted audio controls. However at $3,000 less than the well equipped 2.0T Track Package vehicle, we are almost positive that future Genesis Coupe owners won’t mind.
Hyundai turned a few heads at the Miami Auto Show by displaying the all new Equus luxury limousine on the turntable in the center of their booth. While this was actually a Korean spec Equus, it still managed to impress the judges at the show. The new Hyundai is scheduled to go on sale sometime next year for close to $50,000; and while Hyundai only expects to sell 20,000 units per, after sitting in the passenger’s seat we think they shouldn’t have a problem. The car could get toned down for the U.S. Market, after all Korean’s are crazy for chrome, but we just hope the hood ornament stays. It looks like they cut they head off of one of Rolls Royce’s flying ladies and then streamlined her physique in order for it to guide Korean executives as they recline in comfort in the spacious back seat, catch up on some work with the wood tray table or simply relax by watching the fold out television monitor. The Equus is an elegant vehicle from Hyundai and is the next logical step for a company who has just enjoyed so much success with the current award winning Genesis sedan.
