Infiniti M

Infiniti M

We don’t talk about Infiniti all too often here on TopSpeed, but lately they have been part of our news due to their new Infiniti Performance Line (IPL) and the fact that they will be debuting two new M-based models at the Pebble Beach Concours. Now we get to talk about them for a different reason. Infiniti is now ready to introduce the technological advancements in the M35h that they have been discussing for quite some time: world-first steering and braking technologies. These technologies will be ready to roll when the car goes on sale in the USA and Europe in 2011.

The Infiniti M35H will be powered by a hybrid drive system that combines a naturally-aspirated 3.5-liter V6 engine with a 68 HP electric motor mated to a 7-speed Adaptive Shift Control (ASC) automatic transmission. The motor directly operates the brakes using a system called the Electric Driven Intelligent Brake. This system works by allowing the motor to charge the battery when the driver applies the brake. The steering is also unique in the M35h because it is part hydraulic and part electric. The electric portion kicks in when the wheel is turned which boosts efficiency. Both of these technologies may be found in all future Infiniti Direct Response Hybrid vehicles due to their simplicity and effectiveness.

Update 02/07/2011: Infiniti has announced today the official official EPA (Environmental Protection Agency) fuel economy figures for the M35h. The V6 hybrid sedan has a fuel economy is 27 mpg City, 32 mpg Highway, with Combined fuel economy rated at 29 mpg.

UPDATE 01/24/2012: Nissan’s luxury division has released a video of their new M35h sedan taking on the equally irrepressible 2012 Porsche Panamera S Hybrid.

Not one to back down from a German challenge for full-on hybrid supremacy, the M35h and the Panamera S Hybrid engaged in a quarter-mile drag race - with surprising results.

Not only did the 360-horsepower M35h complete its time in just 13.4 seconds - impressive for a hybrid! - but it also managed to spank the Panamera S Hybrid by a good second. On top of that, the time is also a marked improvement from their previous record time of 13.9031 seconds , eclipsing the Guinness World Record by a tidy half-a-second. Check out the video to watch the Infiniti M35h show up the Porsche Panamera S Hybrid.

UPDATE 02/13/12: Infiniti has released a behind-the-scenes look at all the preparation work, setup, and equipment involved in filming the video showing the M35h’s record-breaking acceleration time. It sure looked like it took a lot of complicated equipment just to shoot a video on how the M35h became the fastest accelerating hybrid in the world.

Rolling into the 2011 Toyko Motor Show is an Infiniti luxury sedan that will surely create quite a stir. This is no ordinary Infiniti M . This vehicle has been done over by Japanese tuner, Impul, to create the new Impul 651S, a vehicle that boasts of an impressive aerodynamic package and some engine updates for the 37 and M25 versions.

Some of the changes are not overly obvious, but the result transforms this vehicle from an ordinary people pusher to a mean and low transporter. After all, that is usually the goal for these types of vehicles; transforming the ordinary to the aggressive and stylish.

The exterior package includes a new front bumper, front grille, side skirts, rear bumper, rear wing, and sports ducts to get that low, rough look. The car now sits on AURA SX-20 wheels and a new set of coil over springs. Bringing the gruff sound out of the engine is the new stainless steel exhaust system.

The EXTRA POWER KIT does exactly what it says it does; give the car some extra bang and responsiveness. The device consists of an IMPUL Hi Power Control Unit and big throttle valves. Needless to say, using premium gasoline for the EXTRA POWER KIT can bring out more power. Don’t worry if your Infiniti has already been equipped with an IMPUL Hi Power Control Unit, you can still boost the performance by adding the throttle valves.

Out of the all year-end lists we compiled, picking the top sedan of the year was quite honestly the most difficult of them all.

First of all, the choices are limitless compared to the other segments. Second of all, 2010 has been characterized as a year when sedans - be it entry level ones or luxury types - have become as popular as ever. And lastly, picking one over another has become a matter of preference - and to a certain extent, budget constraints.

For our list, we’ve narrowed it down to five models, all of which are worthy of being hailed as 2010’s top sedan. In this list, three are of German descent, one is of Japanese origin, while the other is British-born. From our hints, you can probably surmise which models made it, but for the sake of suspense, we’re not going to spoil anything.

Head over after the jump for the full details.

Building alliances between automakers is something that has been done fairly often recently thanks to the downward spiral that was our economic state. The auto industry took a big hit and is just now starting to rebuild itself with teams coming together to reduce cost and create more powerful and more efficient vehicles. The recent Nissan-Daimler alliance is an example of this as rumors are suggesting that it will provide Infiniti with some power-boosting help.

Infiniti has already launched the IPL line, but apparently this is just the beginning. The IPL G Coupe’s 248hp will be chump change when compared with the IPL version of the Infiniti M, set to be launched in 2012. This vehicle will be carrying a Mercedes AMG sourced 6.2 liter V8 engine that will allow it to compete against models like the Mercedes E63 AMG and the Jaguar XF-R .

Along with the AMG engine, Nissan will also be replacing the current 3.7 liter engine with Mercedes’ forthcoming turbocharged 3.5-liter V6 engine in future G models.

The Japanese automaker, Infiniti, has confirmed that the finer line of Nissan automobiles will indeed produce the M35 hybrid luxury sedan. The hybrid will join the rest of the conventional internal combustion only vehicles when the 2012 M arrives in showrooms. The revised fuel efficient lineup will also be available with a new high performance diesel V6 model for the Western European market where the less refined fueled automobiles are preferred due to their incredible range and the high price of petrol. The next generation hybrid powered Infiniti M will become the most fuel efficient model in the entire automakers history.

The M35 Hybrid is powered by a gas/electric power train system that combines a naturally aspirated 3.5 Liter V6 and an efficient electric motor. The electric motor acts as both a propulsion unit, boosting the V6 with a “power assist” mode when the pedal is pushed to the metal and also as a generator to power the vehicle’s accessories and improve the engine’s efficiency. However, the combination of electrically charged wound wires and powerful magnets is not the only item that charges the hybrid’s next generation Lithium ion battery pack, but it is also recharged by the luxury sedans deceleration and braking.

The M Hybrid also features an electric vehicle mode that runs solely on the motors, drastically improving fuel efficiency and allowing it to operate as a zero emissions vehicle as well. This optimizes the Inifiniti’s energy consumption across the widest array of driving conditions. The luxury automaker Inifiniti has promised to release further details about the hybrid’s range, performance, and transmission soon. No mater what they have to say about the new green Japanese sedan it will definitely be a hot item.

Updated 11/18/2010: Infiniti’s first production hybrid performance luxury sedan made its debut today at the Los Angeles Auto Show. A unique feature for the new model is a standard audible pedestrian warning system, called Approaching Vehicle Sound for Pedestrians (VSP). This system uses a range of distinctive sounds to help ensure the safety of other road users. VSP automatically works from start-up to approximately 20 miles per hour, cutting back in at approximately 15 miles per hour as the vehicle slows. Sales will begin in early 2011.

Updated 02/23/2011: Infiniti has announced that the new M Hybrid will go on sale starting March 16th, 2011 at a starting price of $53,700. The list of standard equipment includes: leather-appointed seats, 18-inch aluminum-alloy wheels, Active Noise Control, Infiniti Intelligent Key with Push Button Ignition, XM Satellite Radio (XM subscription required, sold separately), Bluetooth Hands-free Phone System and power sliding glass tinted moonroof.

TheM35 Hybrid is not the only hybrid model Infiniti will offer to its customers. Automotive News reports that three months before unveiling its first hybrid vehicle at the Los Angeles Auto Show , Infiniti is already contemplating other models that could use the hybrid powertrain.

This hybrid powertrain is actually the first system made by Nissan themselves. Before anything can be said, there are hybrid Altimas in the States, but those powertrains are created by Toyota. Ben Poore, vice president of Infiniti promises that this new hybrid system will deliver "V-6 power at four-cylinder fuel economy levels" and Larry Dominque, Nissan North America’s vice president of product planning, claims that the new hybrid system was designed to fit all of Infiniti’s rear-wheel-drive models.

It should be arriving in showrooms in the second quarter of 2011.

Infiniti’s new M35 Hybrid is about to go on sale and it seems that Nissan is pretty confident about their new hybrid system. The company expects the new model to deliver nearly double the mileage of the gasoline-engine version.

"Typically, carmakers say the fuel economy improvement on their cars using a ’strong’ or ’full’ hybrid system is roughly 30 percent, while for ’mild’ hybrids (like Honda’s), it’s 15 percent," said Koichi Hayasaki, chief engineer of Nissan Nissan ’s rear-wheel-drive hybrid system. "We’re aiming for an improvement of 60 to 90 percent," meaning the future M hybrid will have the same fuel economy of a compact car."

As previously reported, Infiniti will bring two M-based models to Pebble Beach. Today, in an interview with Automotive News, Ben Poore, vice president of the Infiniti business unit, offered new details on the two cars.

The two models will be revealed in October or November with the new one being referred as a new engine option, not an all-new model. Poore described the second offering as a product in a "volume segment" that is new to Infiniti. "It expands our footprint into an area where we’ve never played before," he said. Both models will go on sale before Infiniti will offer the hybrid M sedan . He also confirmed that Infiniti is preparing a four-seater hybrid model, but he offered no other details on it.

You heard a lot people talking about the recent alliance between Daimler and Renault-Nissan, but what will this bring to the Infiniti line-up? According to Japan’s Best Car magazine the Infiniti M andInfiniti G replacements (known as the Nissan Fuga and Skyline in Japan) will share a foundation with the Mercedes E-Class . This may be a little hard to believe, but it is not completely crazy. Look at Volkswagen and Porsche . That seemed to be an unlikely pairing as well and they have done it. The platform sharing between Mercedes Mercedes and Infiniti are just rumors for now, but we will keep chugging ahead until we get some sort of confirmation or refutability of this development.

What we do know about this alliance so far is that it will bring the development of a new rear-wheel drive platform for small cars and the sharing of diesel and petrol engines between the two groups. Also, a small Infiniti CUV based on the next generation of the Mercedes A-class is also a possibility.

Sounds to us like this could mark the start of a productive friendship. Especially if we get to see some high-speed Mercedes engines in cheaper Infiniti models.

A few days ago we reported that Infiniti will bring two M-based models to the Pebble Beach Concours . Today, AutoBlog reports that the new models will be sold under the Infiniti Performance Line (IPL) nomenclature.

What is IPL? "A new catalog of in-house developed upgrades which – according to the filing – will include everything from air filters to cat-back exhaust systems, and – more intriguingly – "automotive engine parts, namely turbochargers and superchargers." Most like Infiniti’s version of the Nissan’s Nismo and the F-Sport line for Lexus .

Previously reported, the two models being brought to Pebble Beach "will extend Infiniti into an area we haven’t been before and that one of those models will be more performance oriented." Any performance orientation mixed in with some turbochargers and superchargers would definitely be a hot ticket. We can’t wait to see what specifications come out of Pebble Beach this year...namely by Infiniti .
