Infiniti->ke36 unveiled at the 2013 Frankfurt Motor Show ->ke235 the Q30 concept - a mixture between a coupe, hatchback and crossover set to be put into production in 2015.

The design of the Q30 Concept looks sharp and appears to have been designed with plenty of inspiration from other Infiniti concepts from previous years, including the Etherea. Incidentally, the latter was also a compact concept that was introduced a few years ago.

One of the few details we have of the Q30 Concept is that it will carry the same front-wheel-drive platform that you can find in the new Mercedes-Benz CLA-Class->ke3130. That's not a coincidence, considering that the two brands joined forces a few years ago to share some of its technology and development know-how with each other.

The engine for the concept will likely come in the form of a hybrid->ke147 although don't be surprised if the production version opts for the more traditional four-cylinder engine.

Another curious tidbit about the Q30 Concept is the involvement of Infiniti's director of performance, Sebastian Vettel. Yep, the reigning F1 world champion will be heavily involved in the development of the production model so that's something we can all look forward to as well.

Pros
Cons

Exterior

It will be pretty difficult to include the new Q30 Concept in a category of vehicles because it is a combination of a coupe, crossover and hatchback. Infiniti opted for this strange combination in its attempt to attract more younger buyers.

The new Q30 follows the design language started by the previous Infiniti concepts, like the Etherea, but it adds new, more contemporary ideas. The concept is defined by bolder lines and a more sensual sculpting that enhances the muscular look of the Q30.

On the front grille and the lower sill of the body sides, the new Q30 borrows genuine carbon fiber elements from the Red Bull Racing RB9 Formula One Car. The carbon fiber is being highlighted by a pretty cool violet paint. The concept sits on 20-inch wheels featuring a cool violet accent graduated in intensity from inner to outer.

Interior

On the interior, the Q30 is defined by highly sculptural shapes created using Infiniti's "dual wave" effect and pursuing the notion of dissymmetry. The cabin features a black-and-white theme, combined with creme leathers and a slight bronze effect.

The upper section of the seat-backs feature sculpted ceramic elements used to house speakers for the audio system, while the center console, door panels, seats, vent bezels and controls all feature metal surfaces in contrasting matte and gloss finishes. The instrument panel and the seats are wrapped in high-quality leather with Infiniti-signature violet stitching.

Drivetrain

Infiniti said nothing about the powertrain featured in the new Q30 concept or to be used in the production version, but we expect to see conventional four-cylinder engines and most likely a hybrid powertrain.

When can I drive one?

The new Infiniti Q30 previews a new compact premium model set to arrive on the market in 2015. Prices will be revealed at a later date.

Competitors

BMW 1-Series GT

By the time Infiniti will launch the new Q30 on the market, BMW will also unveil the Gran Turismo version for the next generation 1-Series. The model will be offered in both three and five-doors configurations and will be powered by turbocharged three and four cylinder engines that "will produce anywhere from 75 to 200 horsepower.

Expect the new 1 Series GT to arrive in late 2014.

Mercedes A-Class

The new generation Mercedes A-Class was unveiled in production form at the 2011 New York Auto Show and will share its platform with the upcoming Q30. The A-Class is offered with both gasoline and diesel engines, with the gasoline lineup including 1.6 and 2.0 liters engines, with power ranging from 115 to 211 horsepower. Diesel fans can choose between the 109 horsepower A 180 CDI, the 136 horsepower A 200 CDI, and the 170 horsepower A 220 CDI.

Conclusion

With the production version Q30, Infiniti hopes to attract more younger buyers, because apparently, they are looking for rather unusual models. In fact Infiniti hopes that in one decade, 80% of all its customers to be from Gen X and Gen Y. If the price will be kept at a reasonable level, we are pretty sure Infiniti's dream will become a reality.
