Jaguar's upcoming BMW 3 Series->ke290 fighter, the XE, is reportedly getting a high-performance, supercharged SVR version. At least that's what Auto Express claims, adding that the hot sedan is being prepared by Jaguar Land Rover's recently established Special Vehicle Operations (SVO) division. Although this is just an unconfirmed rumor, the scenario is very likely, as the XE lineup will require a more powerful sedan to compete against the range-topping BMW M3->ke2366.

The SVR-badged XE is reportedly set to arrive by early 2016, about one year after the regular model goes on sale. Although Jaguar has already confirmed a performance-oriented XE powered by the 3.0-liter V-6 fitted in the F-Type->ke1224, Auto Express says SVO will be taking things even further and drop the company's supercharged, 5.0-liter V-8 between the front wheels. With 489 horsepower at its disposal, the XE->ke3138 SVR will need about four seconds to sprint from naught to 62 mph, while top speed will be electronically limited at 155 mph.

As things stand, BMW->ke178 has plenty of reasons to be worried...

Visual and Performance Upgrades All Around

The almighty, supercharged V-8 won't be the only performance update the XE will be getting. The sedan will also gain an active exhaust system, larger performance brakes, a stiffer suspension and an electronically controlled limited slip rear differential. The Brits will focus on shedding as much weight as possible, while increasing traction and cornering capabilities. Naturally, the XE SVR will get its share of extensive testing at the Nurburgring track.

Visually, the XE SVR will boast an aggressive body kit consisting of bespoke front bumper and grille, flared wheel arches, and redesigned side skirts. At the rear, the reshaped bumper will include a race-inspired diffuser and quad tailpipes. The cabin won't stray too far from the regular XE layout, but expect a set of bolstered sports seats for the driver and front passenger, and unique trims and color schemes. Carbon-fiber inserts are likely to emphasize on the sedan's lightweight nature.

Competitors

BMW M3

The current-generation BMW M3, the most coveted high-performance sedan in its segment, is powered by a turbocharged, 3.0-liter, inline-six engine developed to replace the aging, naturally aspirated, 4.4-liter V-8. The unit cranks out 425 horsepower and 406 pound-feet of torque, which, combined with the vehicle's reduced curb weight, provides impressive 0-to-60 mph acceleration times. When fitted with a six-speed manual, the M3 reaches the benchmark in 4.1 seconds, while the seven-speed automatic enables it to sprint from naught to 60 mph in only 3.9 seconds. Top speed is limited at 155 mph.

Besides a brand-new engine and revised exterior and interior looks, the BMW M3 also received an all-new suspension that shaved several pounds off the sedan's total weight. Pricing starts from $62,000 before options.

Mercedes-Benz C63 AMG

The upcoming C63 AMG is also in for big changes, as the huge, naturally aspirated, 6.2-liter V-8 is being replaced by an all-new, twin-turbo, 4.0-liter V-8. Albeit smaller, the unit is expected to deliver in excess of 440 horsepower and send the sedan flying from 0 to 60 mph in around four seconds. Just enough to give the M3 a run for its money.

Styling-wise, the C63 AMG will borrow most its cues from the 2015 C-Class. Naturally, a more aggressive body kit will come to replace the front and rear bumpers, the grille and the side skirts. Lightweight wheels wrapped in high-performance tires and AMG badging all around will complete the exterior package. The interior will be packed with sporty features, including bolstered front seats and a sports steering wheel.

Jaguar XE

Scheduled to launch in Europe for the 2015 model year with a 2016 introduction for North America, the Jaguar XE will arrive in showrooms as a BMW 3 Series fighter. The four-door compact will be underpinned by the company’s all-new aluminum architecture and brand-new suspension suspension. The sedan will hit the streets with a bevy of engines under its hood, including diesel and gasoline units from the newly announced Ingenium lineup.

Design-wise, expect the XE to keep most of Jaguar’s traditional styling cues, while getting a few signature lines of its own. The vehicle will be highlighted by a sporty front end, an arched trunk lid and a sloping, coupe-like roof.
