With 24 years of history, the Jeep Wrangler has become one of the most successful models in the Jeep line-up. Currently in its third generation (JK starting 2007), the Wrangler->ke425 is about to receive one of the most important updates for the 2012 model year.

Up until now, the Wrangler was powered by a 3.8-liter V-6 engine that delivered a total of 202 HP and 237 ft-lb of torque. This engine wasn't bad, but it lacked the power needed for the Wrangler to really flex its muscles during those off-road activities. In 2012, that will all change as the boring V6 engine has been dropped on favor of a new 3.6-liter Pentastar V-6 engine that delivers a total of 290 HP and a peak torque of 237 lbs-ft.

The 2012 Wrangler hasn't been announced by Jeep->ke40 just yet, but a Georgia based dealer has already placed a Rubicon version on sale on eBay for a price of $35,628.

Exterior and Interior

For 2012, the Wrangler Rubicon will continue with the same features that were revealed for the 2011 model year: a redesigned instrument panel and new storage areas with improved ergonomics and upgraded materials.

The interior will be offered with cloth bucket seats, driver height adjuster seats, front seat back map pocket, leather wrapped steering wheel, and Hill Descent Control.

The standard equipment list will include: Cruise Control with steering wheel controls, Hydraulic Power-Assist, Audio Cruise Control, a manual convertible roof for the Rubicon model, and SIRIUS Travel Link.

Engine

The 2012 Jeep Wrangler is powered by a 3.6-liter Pentastar V-6 engine that delivers a total of 290 HP and a peak torque of 237 lbs-ft. The engine is mated to a standard six-speed manual gearbox or an available four-speed automatic transmission.

The Jeep Wrangler Rubicon model is equipped with an Off-Road Rock-Trac NV241 two-speed transfer case with a 4.0:1 low-range gear ratio, as well as electric front- and rear-axle lockers, an electronic sway bar disconnect, and 32-inch BF Goodrich off-road tires.

Prices

Official prices for the 2012 Wrangler haven't been announced just yet, but a 2012 Wrangler has been put on sale for $35,628. Full prices will be announced at a later date.

Competition

When someone buys a Jeep Wrangler, they are looking to go off-roading in a vehicle that can withstand the trials and tribulations of doing so. Another vehicle that offers a similar experience is the Toyota FJ Cruiser->ke353. The FJ Cruiser is powered by a 4.0-liter V6 engine that delivers a total of 260 HP and 271 lb.-ft. of peak torque. The engine is mated to either a six-speed manual transmission or an electronically shifted five-speed automatic transmission. These figures prove to be great competition for the Jeep Wrangler's new Pentastar engine, but still fall a little short.
