2011 Kia K2 Sedan

  Review

Kia has unveiled at the Shanghai Auto Show a new sedan model based on the Rio platform. It will be called K2 and was designed and engineered specifically for the Chinese market. Sales will begin this June, and it will be followed by a five-door hatchback later in August.

Speaking at the Kia press conference at the Shanghai Motor Show, Hyoung-Keun Lee, Vice Chairman of Kia Motors, said, "We are confident that this all-new model for China will provide the momentum needed for Kia not only to remain as one of China’s fastest growing automotive brands but also to become a top 10 automaker in the local market in terms of quality and customer satisfaction."

The new K2 sedan takes its inspiration from the popular K5 sedan, or Optima as you might know it, including sophisticated lines that create a dynamic, bold and sophisticated exterior appearance. The Chinese customers will have to choose between a 1.4-liter or 1.6-liter Gamma petrol engine mated to a manual or automatic transmission.

Exterior and Interior

The new Kia K2 sedan will measure 4,370 mm in overall length, 1,700 mm in width, and 1,460 mm in height. Up front, the K2 will feature Kia’s signature "tiger nose" radiator grille and innovative fog lamp design, large air intake, and dynamic swept back headlamps. The car’s design language will be continued by powerful side air vents and trunk edge lines, a two-tone bumper, and modern combination lamps.

The interior will be driver-oriented and will combine a 3-cylinder supervision instrument cluster, cloth lined door panels, leather steering wheel, engine start-stop button, and smart key.

Engine

The new K2 will be offered in six trim levels with either a 1.4-liter or 1.6-liter Gamma petrol engine mated to a manual or automatic transmission. Kia hasn’t revealed any specifications just yet, but we expect to see an output ranging from 100 to 150 HP.

Prices

Prices for the all new Kia K2 will be revealed closer to the car’s official market launch in June.

Competition

When it comes to the K2, the first competitor that should be considered is the Hyundai Accent. This model is offered with a 1.6-liter DOHC in-line four cylinder engine that delivers 110 hp at 6,000 rpm and torque is 106 lb.-ft. at 4,500 rpm. The engine is mated to a manual transmission and delivers a fuel economy of 27 mpg City and 36 mpg Highway.

On the Chinese market, the K2 will also have to take on local models, like the Toyota Vios, a model that is powered by a four-cylinder engine with an output of 107HP.

- Impressive front design
- Six trim levels to choose from
- Both manual and automatic

This K2 sedan is truly looks so classy and elegant because of its sleek body paint, and it is already looking great on that. Furthermore, I’m too disappointed on its poor engine specification.

I’m agreed that it really had an impressive front and fog lamp and really looks good on its color, but I don’t think that it had a powerful and remarkable engine.
