Kia->ke41 continued its eco-onslaught today at the Chicago Auto Show->ke225 when it introduced the 2014 Optima Hybrid. It features a revised exterior design similar to the refresh the base gasoline sedan->ke142 just received heightens the visuals, while some specific hybrid additions increase aerodynamic efficiency. Tons of high-tech equipment and increased levels of safety make this Optima Hybrid sedan ready to storm the market.

The new Optima Hybrid’s gas-electric combination powertrain is good for 199 horsepower and 235 lb-ft of torque. Thanks to this hybrid setup, Kia is promising an EPA-estimated 36 mpg in the city, 40 mpg on the highway, and a combined overall fuel economy of 38 mpg.

The latest Kia Optima->ke1325 sedan has been garnering lots of praise since its refresh this year, and it is nice to see this same level of refinement being applied to the Hybrid->ke147. The new design is both and refreshing in a world of “me-too” sedan styling.

Exterior

The new exterior features many of the same visual upgrades that the standard Optima sedan was gifted a few months ago, but with some added Hybrid punch.

A unique front bumper is loaded with extra vents that reduce drag and increase airflow around the car. The all-new wheel designs are more aerodynamic to reduce drag and they weigh less than the outgoing models. Hybrid-exclusive LED lighting and a bespoke grille finish out the defining visual features.

Drivetrain

The heart of the new Optima Hybrid combines a 2.4-liter, four-cylinder engine with a 47-horsepower electric traction motor. The result is a combined 199 horsepower and 235 pound-feet of torque. The only transmission available is a 6-speed automatic.

The electric power for that hybrid motor is stored in a high-tech lithium polymer battery with a 47 kW power output. Lithium polymer is far more expensive than other battery types, but it has distinct advantages in size, weight and power density. The whole battery that powers the new Optima Hybrid only weighs 91 pounds.

Competition

Ford Fusion Hybrid

The new Ford Fusion Hybrid looks like a million dollars and boasts a fuel economy rating of 47 mpg in both city and highway driving. It makes for a strong case against the Optima Hybrid. The Kia does have a lot more horsepower though, so it may be better to drive.

Toyota Camry Hybrid

Just as the Camry is the yardstick by which all midsize sedans are measured, the Camry Hybrid continues that tradition in the hybrid market. The new SE Limited Edition increases the visual presence of the Toyota, but it still lacks any real exciting exterior design. It does match the Kia on power, but if the Optima can arrive with a lower price, it will make a good alternative to the Toyota.

Conclusion

The Kia Optima Hybrid offers a great level of equipment, technology and fuel economy in a stylish package, that will likely carry a bargain-level price tag. It is still fighting an uphill battle though. With Ford's breakout success with the new Fusion and Toyota updating the Camry Hybrid, there are lots of great options for hybrid buyers right now.
