Kia cars

Kia Motors represents the truest form of the American dream. Long ago in 1992, Kia immigrated into the U.S. and brought with it little more than the proverbial change in its pocket. The Korean automaker had ambitious dreams of striking it big and making a name for itself within the free 50 states that span the North American continent. Ambition and tenacity would come in handy as the young automaker rolled out products that were less than popular with buyers used to elbow room and reliability.

However, as time marched on, the young automaker grew up. It began making vehicles the car-buying public actually took interest in. Sales began to grow, as did the level of talent within the design and engineering teams. Improved looks and better quality interiors soon started finding their way into Kia’s model lineup, improving year over year. Reliability grew as well, netting some notable awards that further assured potential customers. Soon, Kia Motors and its sister company Hyundai , found themselves unofficially considered a respectable automaker in the land of dreams.

The twins aren’t resting on their laurels, though, as both are rolling out premium products that evenly compete against the vehicular industry stalwarts like Ford , Toyota , Honda , and even Lexus . That brings us to Kia’s latest and greatest product, the 2014 Optima.

The new Optima carries the torch by sporting a slight refresh and reworked interior over the outgoing 2013 model – one that enjoyed incredible sales of over 150,000 units last year alone. Without messing with success, Kia has moved the Optima into the new year with extra levels of refinement and class – something never associated with the automaker just 15 years prior.

When I got the call that I was receiving a Kia Cadenza — the Korean automaker’s "luxury" rig — I began recalling the Kia Amanti , which was put out of its misery in 2009. This Jaguar X-Type wannabe was just north of a fully loaded Toyota Camry on the luxury scale, so my hopes were not too high for the Cadenza to impress me.

When the driver rolled up in the Cadenza, I instantly though "blah, just another old Kia," as its outward appearance doesn’t necessarily separate it from the rest of the Kia lineup. All of that changed once I got the chance to grab a seat in this Nappa leather-equipped bargain luxury car that featured an Alcatara-like headliner, panoramic sunroof and nearly every goodie you could imagine for a tad under $42k.

Sometimes, however, first impressions can be incorrect, and I was still anticipating a dud in the Cadenza.

Ever since its official launch, the Kia Soul has been one of the most active models at SEMA . Last year, Kia rolled into Las Vegas with a Soul lineup inspired by comic-book heroes , but this year, Kia prepared quite an impressive lineup of Souls with four of them drawing inspiration from the music world.

These four music-inspired Souls touched on different parts of the music world, as they featured a cutting-edge DJ station ; a pro-sound-quality, plug-in-ready amplifier on wheels ; and a load of memorabilia from all things music . This final model is the Soul ’’The Voice" and it was prepared by NBC as a tribute to the famous TV show.

According to its creator, this Soul "represents the sheer talent needed to perform in front of a live audience and millions at home." This model features a cool bright red exterior paint combined with a "The Voice logo" on the side, vinyl on the window portion and a cool "I Want You" logo illuminated in the lower grille.

At the 2013 Los Angeles Auto Show , Kia unveiled its new, rear-wheel-drive flagship sedan that will go on sale next year. While we have no prices on the K900 just yet, rumors point toward the new sedan coming in around $70k, and will target the BMW 7 Series and models like it.

The new K900 will be built on the same platform as the Hyundai Equus , from which it will borrow the powerful, 5.0-liter, V-8 engine that hooks up to an eight-speed transmission with three driving modes: Eco, Normal and Sport.

The K900 will be put on sale in early 2014 — just in time to celebrate Kia’s 20th anniversary in the U.S. market. According to the company, the K900 "is the next logical progression for Kia. It demonstrates what Kia is capable of and will help redefine what the Kia brand stands for."

To commemorate the annual Vans Warped Tour, Kia and Popular Mechanics are tapping into their youthful and fun spirits to present a Kia Soul that defies explanation at the 2013 SEMA Auto Show.

The specially created crossover was designed and developed with the idea of taking to the road to enjoy the famous touring music and extreme sports festival. If there ever was a car that captures the idea and essence of the Vans Warped Tour, it’s this one.

Not only does the Soul carry a custom, albeit bombastic, paint finish that was inspired by the colors of the tour itself, Popular Mechanics and Kia decided to give it an eye-catching airbrush artwork detail, complete with references to the blending in of the music and action sports worlds. The windows of the Soul are all gone, and in their place are custom-built fiberglass body panels, each housing a pair of Infinity eight-inch speakers. Wonder how you can appreciate the outside world when you’re inside this vehicle?

But thoughtful musings like those are far from the objective of this Soul, as this specially-produced crossover has one objective in mind: to bring the spirit of the Vans Warped Tour to life inside a rolling set of wheels. A 50-inch flat-panel monitor has also been mounted atop the car with running footage from the tour itself so you never miss out on the experience of the festival.

Finally, a slide-out rear barbeque was also fitted into the this Soul, giving you the full music-inspired tailgating experience so you can enjoy the tour like nobody’s business.

Museums are often times housed inside massive buildings; a lot of us know that.

Apparently, Kia is looking to reinvent the way museums are developed and with the help of RIDES Magazine, the Korean automaker has turned one of its Soul crossovers into an actual museum. Really, there are plenty of signature items inside this Soul that’ll make you consider foregoing that trip to Cleveland.

It’s a veritable music museum on wheels, filled with memorabilia from a variety of industry icons. There’s a guitar signed by Slash, a G-Unit sneaker signed by 50 Cent, a Jimi Hendrix gold album, and a signed John Legend microphone. All these items are displayed in Plexiglass enclosures — hand-built, by the way — in the Soul’s trunk, rear windows, and rear hatch insert.

If that’s not enough to truly identify this Soul as a true one-of-a-kind, the collaborators used gold and platinum records as the overarching influence of the crossover, highlighted by a PPG waterborne platinum silver paint, gold exhaust tips and a set of 20-inch anodized gold HRE 935 wheels.

Even the interior wasn’t spared from getting its own detailing. A custom black suede and leather interior are the highlighted and complemented nicely by gold diamond stitching and painted trims.

So you have a Kia Soul that’s been turned into a museum; a Soul that has a DJ mixer on its roof; and a Soul that pays homage to The Voice. Wonder what else the company can think of, right?

Well, this collaboration between Kia and Popular Mechanics has the answer. Like its name suggests, the Amped Soul is all about bringing even more boom to the small crossover, specifically those ear-gasmic JBL speakers that somehow are strong enough to allow the actual Soul to sit on top of them.

We don’t know how the crossover is going to move with those speakers underneath it, but hey, those 22-inch Forgiato custom three-piece wheels are a sight in their own. Add that to the custom Pearl White paint finish and the blacked-out windows, and you have a Soul that would actually look like a decent option when you’re in the market for one.

Unfortunately, the Amped Soul is just a show car, albeit one that can make your ears bleed faster than the time it takes for you to throw on ear protection. A full-on JBL Pro Live surround equipment has been integrated into the rear-hinged doors, while LED ambient lighting on the interior and four 12-inch Infinity1 power subwoofers are responsible for only drawing a right mood to the cabin, but also putting on a speaker show on four wheels the likes of which you probably will never see again.

The lineup of Kia Souls that rolled into the 2013 SEMA Auto Show are all musically inclined, including the DJ Booth Soul, which was transformed into what Kia describes as the "ultimate DJ booth on wheels"

With all five Soul models offering something totally unique, the DJ Booth Soul is the only that doesn’t have a roof. In place of the actual roof, Kia and RIDES magazine decided that it would be a good idea to install a pro-grade Pioneer CDJs and mixer. Don’t worry about trying to get comfortable in the back seat, because the rear seats were also taken out in favor of putting an actual custom diamond-plated stage.

Before we get too drawn into all the DJ paraphernalia added to this Soul , we should give due props to the purple and turquoise accents of the crossover, a two-color combination that was used to pay homage to its EDM and hip-hop influences. LED lighting, front and rear strobes, and speaker enclosures built into the lower grille are also part of the overall package, while 19-inch Rotiform BRU wheels wrapped in Continental tires round out the exterior upgrades.

In addition to the aforementioned stage inside the cabin of the Soul, the interior was also given a three-prong design touch that includes black leather, graphite suede and turquoise stitching, giving it a lounge-like feel that plays well into the whole motif of the program. A Maschine Mikro production studio was molded into the passenger-side dash, while Kia also added a Pioneer audio system that includes five amplifiers, three component speakers, two 10-inch and two 12-inch Champion Series subwoofers, and a sound bar housing four coaxial speakers, putting a resounding stamp on the DJ theme of this extraordinary Soul.
