2013 Lamborghini Aventador LP700-4 Roadster

As promised, today is the day that Lamborghini has dropped the official details on the new Aventador LP700-4 Roadster. The model has been described as "the most exciting series production Lamborghini ever built and the new benchmark in the world of open-top luxury super sports cars."

To no surprise, the new Roadster version features a design language similar to the coupe version , except for the changes any open-top model requires. For example, the rear pillar has been redesigned to offer total support for the removable roof and a new engine hood that features a central "spinal column" with two pairs of hexagonal windows connected at the sides.

The new Aventador Roadster is being offered with a two-piece roof made entirely from carbon fiber that can be stored in the front luggage compartment.

Under the hood you will find the same 6.5 liter aspirated V12 that delivers a total of 700 horsepower and mated to an ISR 7-speed gearbox. The Roadster version will sprint from 0 to 60 mph in just 3 seconds and can hit a top speed of 217 mph.

In Europe the model can be already ordered and the price will start from 300,000 euro or about $380,000 at the current exchange rates.

UPDATE 11/15/2012: Lamborghini has finally announced the U.S. prices for its new Aventador Roadster, and we have to admit it’s a little bit more than we were expecting: $445,300, including the $3,700 gas-guzzler tax.

Exterior

Lamborghini Aventador LP700-4 Roadster

Like with the coupe version, the upcoming Aventador Spyder will take its design inspiration from both the Reventon and theSesto Elemento concept. However, Lamborghini will make some modifications required for an open-top model.

These modifications will include a redesigned rear pillar, which offers total support for the removable roof, an automatic protection system for passengers, and provides the engine compartment with ample ventilation. The engine bonnet now features a central "spinal column" with two pairs of hexagonal windows connected at the sides. This configuration allows for a better engine cooling, helps drain off rain water and offers up a better view of the V-12 engine.

The Aventador Roadster comes with a two-piece roof made from carbon fiber, and features technologies like RTM and forged composite. Because each piece weights less than 13 pounds, they can be easily stored in the front compartment and reinstalled so in just a matter of seconds.

The new Aventador roadster will come in a two-tone finish with the windshield pillar, two roof sections and rear window area coming draped in gloss black, while the rest of the body can be ordered in a number of colors, including the all-new Azzuro Thetis - a light, metallic blue that is reminiscent of the 1968 Miura Roadster.

Also, new for the Roadster, is a set of 20- and 21-inch Dione wheels made of forged aluminum on the front and rear, respectively.

Interior

Lamborghini Aventador LP700-4 Roadster

The Aventador Spyder’s interior will mirror that of the coupe. It will feature one large LCD screen for the instrumentation, and a separate LCD screen to control the stereo and navigation system functions.

However, even here Lamborghini opted for some individual touches. The Roadster will come with a special leather called "Sabbia Nefertem" — a perfect match for the exterior Azzuro Thetis.

Standard equipment will include ABS, electronic brake distribution, anti-slip control, speed-dependent servo-tronic steering, hill start assist and, of course, ESP stability control. The Drive Select System enables vehicle characteristics — engine, transmission, differential, stability control, steering — to be set in accordance with individual driver preferences in one of three modes – Strada (road), Sport and Corsa (track).

Engine

Lamborghini Aventador LP700-4 Roadster

Under the hood, Lamborghini will place the same 6.5-liter V-12 engine with an AWD layout that produces 700 horsepower at 8,250 rpm and 509 pound-feet of torque at 5,500 rpm. The engine will be combined with an ISR 7-speed gearbox, and push-rod suspension will help keep the roadster glued to the asphalt. Like the 2013 Aventador coupe, the Roadster version will also offer a cylinder deactivation system, which helps keep the CO2 emissions and fuel consumption as low as possible when the engine is only under partial load.

The Roadster version will sprint from 0 to 60 mph in just 3 seconds and will hit a top speed of 217 mph.

When Can I Buy One?

The new Aventador Roadster can already be ordered and in Europe, and prices will start from $445,300, including the $3,700 gas-guzzler tax.

Competition

Lamborghini Aventador LP700-4 Roadster

Finding a competitor for the Aventador Spyder would be quite a task at the moment. However, before the Aventador Spyder makes its debut, Pagani will have plenty of time to introduce the roadster version for its recently launched Huayra . This model will be powered by the same V-12 engine with 700 horsepower and 730 pound-feet of torque found in the coupe version, and boast a top speed in the 220 mph area.

McLaren has also promised a more powerful version of its latest supercar, the MP4-12C . The current McLaren supercar has a 3.8-liter twin-turbo V-8 that produces 592 horsepower at 7,000 rpm and 443 pound-feet of torque between 3,000 and 7,000 rpm, but the future version is expected to see at least 700 horsepower under the hood.

These two supercars are both great competitors for the Aventador Spyder. We’ll give you our preference when each of the automakers debut their rides.

LOVE IT
  • Looks great on both interior and exterior
  • Impressive performance numbers
  • Carbon Fiber elements
LEAVE IT
  • Still a bit expensive
  • Competitors offer similar power and performance

Press release:

Automobili Lamborghini presents the new Lamborghini Aventador LP700-4 Roadster: the most exciting series production Lamborghini ever built and the new benchmark in the world of open-top luxury super sports cars.

Lamborghini Aventador LP700-4 Roadster

On the heels of the successful coupe introduced in Summer 2011, and with over 1,300 units already delivered to customers, the House of the Raging Bull is now offering the convertible version of the Aventador, a vehicle that perfectly balances the ultimate driving experience with the ultimate in sports car sophistication.

The new Lamborghini Aventador LP 700-4 Roadster can immediately be recognized by the unique profile of its upper area, which extends along newly designed geometric lines from the removable roof to the engine hood.

The Roadster’s design is the result of a careful study into the best way of combining performance, elegant style, ease of use and a driving experience that excites all five senses.

The two-piece roof is made entirely from carbon fiber using various technologies such as RTM and Forged Composite®. These technologies guarantee maximum aesthetic performance and stiffness although each component is extremely light, weighing less than 6 kg. These two parts are removable, easy to handle, and being lightweight and simple to attach, can be stored in the front luggage compartment. In just a few seconds the Aventador LP 700-4 Roadster can be admired in all its luxurious beauty.

The rear pillar has been redesigned to offer total support for the removable roof, accommodate an automatic protection system for passengers, and provide the engine compartment with ample ventilation.

Right at first glance, it’s noticeable that the engine hood on the Roadster differs from the hood on the coupé because of its central “spinal column” with two pairs of hexagonal windows connected at the sides as if they were hyper-tech armor plates. Their purpose is to cool the engine, drain off rain water properly and, of course, allow the beauty of the V12 power unit to be admired.

The driver of the Aventador Roadster and his passenger can decide for themselves how intensely they would like to enjoy the driving experience. The powered rear windshield not only influences the flow of air in the vehicle, but also controls the experience of the sound from the twelve-cylinder engine. The wind deflector, on the other hand, delivers almost complete calm inside the car, even at high speed. It rests on the front windshield frame and can likewise be stored in the luggage compartment when not in use.

The Aventador Roadster is also equipped with door windows with chamfered edges, which always ensure a perfect fit into the hard-top seal, and underline the sharp side profile of the car.

The body of the new Lamborghini Aventador LP 700-4 Roadster sports a two-tone finish, as the windshield pillar, the two roof sections and the rear window area up to the “fins” are painted in gloss black. The visual effect is that of a completely open vehicle with sleek lines combining perfectly balanced sportiness and elegance.

The range of colors available for the Roadster has been supplemented with a very light, metallic blue color, Azzuro Thetis, whose tone varies with the angle of the light. This color recalls the shade of the extraordinarily beautiful 1968 Miura Roadster, and both highlights and reinforces the lines of the vehicle by adding strength and dynamism.

Even the interior has a new look. The use of leather called Sabbia Nefertem highlights the superb hand-made craftsmanship of the upholstery from Sant’ Agata Bolognese and is a perfect match for the exterior in Azzuro Thetis. Finally, the new Aventador LP 700-4 Roadster also features new Dione 20”/21” rims with a daring, aggressive look. Crafted in light forged aluminum, they lower the weight of the vehicle by 10 Kg as compared with the standard set of rims.

The new Aventador LP700-4 Roadster boasts record performance. It accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in only 3 seconds flat and has a maximum speed of some 350 km/h.

These numbers, combined with a drive train featuring a centrally located, 6.5 liter aspirated V12 generating 700 hp, an ISR 7-speed gearbox and push-rod suspension make the new Aventador Roadster a unique super sports car with no direct competition.

Of course the Roadster’s V12 also includes a cylinder deactivation system when the engine is working at partial capacity, while the innovative, instant Stop & Start system includes high-performance capacitors known as supercaps to awaken the engine. This is an absolute first in the super sports car segment.

The new Lamborghini Aventador LP 700-4 Roadster is a dream that can be realized and ordered at any Lamborghini dealer in the world for the price of 300,000 euro, excluding taxes.

If I were to get this car (which of course I can’t), then I would probable go with the coupe version. Much better than having to deal with soft tops.

OK, there’s really nothing much to say here except that you have a pretty good imagination. But the Aventador’s Spyder version is certainly something worth imagining.

Kevin010,
No its not the same as a Nissan GTR.
All of you people look purely at acceleration times and HP. everything that you dont see is what makes it good. not to mention the fact that if you dug deep you would find that the GTR is cheap underneath and that some parts come from the Maxima! Start looking at more than 0-60 times if you want to do a fair comparison.

nice smiley but id rather get the nissan gtr.. half less cylinders, lower price and performes almost the same(in the 0-60, which does it in 3 secs.. and possibly in 2.8)

Well now, this one looks quite impressive, and pretty accurate too, considering that the Spyder version will look almost identical to the coupe. Sure can’t wait for this one.

I’m not surprised at all. Most likely, that would happen that every time a manufacture comes up with a new version or model, a Spyder version would instantly follow. And to be honest, I’m excited about all the future line up of Lamborghini!
