Land Rover Discovery

Land Rover has announced details on the 2012 Discovery 4 model that will be offered with significant engine improvements, as well as a few updates made to both the exterior and interior. For the LR-SDV6 model, the output has been increased from 245 HP to 256 HP, while fuel economy has been improved for all the engines.

For 2012, customers will have the option to choose between three different packages: Technology Pack, HSE Luxury Pack, and the Vision Assist Pack. The exterior updates include a new steering column with chrome bezels, a new premium pebble-like design, a new 19" alloy wheel, or new 20" 5 split-spoke wheels.

"Improved performance, lower CO2 emissions and enhanced design and equipment levels, consolidate the Discovery 4’s position as the most capable and versatile all-purpose vehicle on and off the road today. The Discovery 4 is quite simply in a class of its own," said John Edwards, Land Rover Global Brand Director.

Take a look at the Landrover Discovery 4 and defenseless and weak certainly do not come to mind. The mighty SUV towers over the competition - literally - but that doesn’t mean that added protection isn’t somewhere in the cards. Following the release of the 2011 model, Land Rover has revealed the Discovery 4 Armoured which offers a little more than the standard model.

The new Discovery 4 model features a more powerful 5.0-liter LR-V8 direct-injection petrol engine mated to a six-speed automatic transmission. This combination produces a total of 375 HP that can get the SUV from 0-60mph in just 10.6 seconds. In addition to that power, the Discovery 4 features improved passive safety with an airbag restraint system for driver and front passenger and a more luxurious interior with premium leather seats.

Now this is where it gets much more interesting as the Discovery 4 Armoured features ballistic steel armor and glazing which provide ballistic protection in accordance with European standards BS EN1522 level FB6 and BS EN 1063 level BR6 respectively. It features an independent air suspension and modifications that include uprated air springs and retuned dampers, larger diameter anti-roll bars, and heavy duty Alcon disc brakes front and rear.

Doesn’t sound like something that wants to be messed with, does it?

Black and white are colors that will always be in fashion so it’s really no surprise that automakers choose these two colors when devising some of their special editions. Land Rover is just another example of that as they have unveiled a special edition Discovery 4 that pays tribute to those exact monochromatic colors. Called the Discovery 4 ’Landmark’, this special edition will be offered in Santorini Black or Fuji White color schemes and will go on sale in January 2011.

The exterior of the Landmark edition will be distinguished by Santorini Black finish grille vanes, gloss black 20" 5-spoke diamond-turned alloy wheels, privacy glass, and Satin Black extended roof rails. The interior gets Taurus interior leather which comes in either Ebony or - for the first time in a Discovery - Ivory. Under the hood there is a highly efficient 3.0 liter SDV6 twin turbo diesel engine.

The new Discovery 4 Landmark will also be offered with the Terrain ResponseTM system, which optimizes the vehicle set-up for virtually all on-road or off-road driving situations, with five different settings to suit different terrains.

Superchips has not wasted any time creating another ECU remap, and this time it is for the Land Rover Discovery 4 and the Range Rover Sport HSE . Their new tuning packages for the LandRover models upgrade the performance of the 3.0-liter TDV6 engine by 35 HP and 51 NM of torque.

Since both models carry the same engine under their respective hoods, the performance boost translates into the exact same numbers. The Land Rover/Range Rover 3.0 TDV6 engine’s power output ends up at 282hp at 3632 rpm (compared to a measured 247 bhp as standard,) and 638 Nm (465 lb.ft.) torque (compared with a measured 587 Nm from the factory).

Superchips states that the increase in power will not affect the LandRover Discovery 4 or Range Rover Sport HSE TDV6’s fuel economy. They said that if these vehicles were "driven in a ‘like for like’ manner against the standard version, owners will experience noticeable fuel economy improvements due to the additional low rev torque delivered by the Superchips upgrade." You know people out there are going to test this theory so SuperChips better hope their calculations are correct.

The European tuner Unichip has unveiled a new tuning package for the Land Rover Discovery Series 2. Called the "Sport Conversion," the new package increases the engine’s power to 176 bhp (49 bhp over the standard model) at 4000 rpm and 279 lb.ft of torque at 2957 rpm (an increase of 63 lb.ft). For this power increase, Unichip added a new ‘U-Connect’ plug and play Unichip ECU, designed and developed specifically for the TD5.

This unit comes pre-mapped by Unichip Europe with adjustments to fueling and turbo boost levels to maximize performance throughout the rev range. Fitted in minutes, courtesy of its specially developed wiring loom, the Unichip’s ECU map is the end result of months of dyno and road testing, towing and off road assessment to ensure optimized settings and reliability.

The price for the Unichip Europe Sport conversion is £1396.00 and the price for the Unichip U-Connect ECU package separately is £630.09.

New York was the place for Land Rover to overhaul almost its entire line. After the 2010 refreshes to the Range Rover and Range Rover Sport , it showed off the 2010 LR4.

Land Rover LR4 (Discovery 4)

While the name LR4 is new to Land Rover, it’s just to signify the fourth generation of the Discovery (it’s still called Discovery outside of North America.) Just like the other two Land Rover stylings, the idea with the LR4 is smooth out and simplify. Outside this includes a more aerodynamic front bumper and a new LED light cluster. Inside there are new materials with a more ergonomically friendly layout.

The LR4 will also get the the new 5.0-liter V8 engine that has gone to both Range Rover models. Unlike the Rangers, this Land Rover will not get the supercharged version. The engine is rated at 375 bhp and 375 lbs/ft torque, which gives the LR4 a 0 to 60 mph time of 7.5 seconds.
