The exterior and the interior

For the 2013 model year, the Freelander 2 has received new front and rear lamps with the latest Xenon LED technology, a new signature graphic in the front running lights and a new, bright finish for the grille and fog lamps. The company is also offering a choice of three new exterior colors: Aintree Green, Havana and Mauritius Blue, plus a new set of 17-inch alloy wheels.

Just like with the exterior, the interior has also received a series of updates, starting with a new center console and a new instrument cluster with a 5-inch screen displaying primary vehicle-related information, such as temperature and fuel levels, gear positions and Terrain Response mode.

As a first for the Freelander, Land Rover is also offering the premium Meridian audio system available with a choice of 380W or 825W. This system includes a new 7-inch color touch-screen and either the 380W, 11-speaker system for exceptional stereo sound quality or the impressive 825W surround sound 17-speaker system with Trifield technology.

The engine

Big changes have also been made under the hood. In here Land Rover has replaced the old six-cylinder Si6 petrol with a new 2.0-litre four-cylinder petrol engine that delivers a total of 240 HP and a peak torque of 250 lbs-ft. This output represents a 14% increase over the previous model, but also delivers an impressive fuel economy of 29.4mpg - down from 26.4mpg. This engine is combined with a quick-shifting, refined and highly efficient Aisin AWF21 six-speed automatic transmission with full-time four-wheel drive and a Haldex rear axle differential.

Diesel line-up includes a 2.2-litre TD4 with 150 HP and a SD4 with 190 HP, with the first one also being available in eD4 two-wheel drive form. These two engines can be combined with a six-speed manual transmission and Stop/Start technology.

Prices

The competition

Unfortunately for Land Rover, the SUV market is pretty large and offers lots of alternatives. And as is no secret that the Land Rover models can get a little bit too expensive, here are a few cheaper alternatives to it. First is a model we really like and which has been recently updated: the 2013 Ford Escape. It comes with an updated 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine, a 1.6-liter EcoBoost engine and a 2.0-liter EcoBoost unit.

For clients who are still looking for an expensive model, the BMW X3 is of course another alternative. The German SUV is offered with both four-cylinder diesel and straight six-cylinder petrol engine with power ranging from 184 HP to 306 HP.
