Expanding from their traditional lineup of modified Mopar cars, the German tuners at Startech recently showed off a fast feline at the Frankfurt Motor Show and are continuing their upscale trend of tuner cars with an exclusive take on the Land Rover Range Rover and Freelander 2 luxury SUVs. By upgrading the interior of their modified Rovers with everything from Alcantara to color matched leather and elegant wood paneling, Startech is offering a level of exclusivity that the factory could only dream of offering. In fact they also offer a customer dictated customization program that leaves the choices up to the final consumer.
The exterior of the upscale off road Range Rover is left mostly untouched, the only upgrade to the body are a pair of LED driving lights molded into the front bumper that class up the SUV’s appearance without disturbing the conservative look. They did however find a set of their 22 inch Monostar IV light weight alloy wheels to fit at all four corners, these go a long way to adding a sense of sport to the luxury utility vehicle; something that is only accentuated by the trapezoidal stainless steel dual exhaust.
The more compact Freelander 2 wears a set of slightly smaller 20 inch Monostar IV rims and just like the larger Range Rover, the Land Rover got the LED driving light treatment, integrating it as part of the car’s factory front bumper. Out back Startech shows off their innovative sides by coming up with a lower hatch attachment that beefs up the Freelander 2’s behind and continues the factory lines across the tailgate and just below them are a familiar set of the trapezoidal tailpipes. So whether you are looking for an upscale SUV with a little sense of style no matter if it is big or small, Startech has something to brighten up your day.
Land Rover presented at the Paris Auto Show the new Freelander 2 TD4_e, Land Rover’s most fuel-efficient vehicle to date. The fuel savings comes from the combination of using a diesel engine with a stop/start system (stopping the engine while the car is idling) that is becoming popular in frugal European cars.
The CO2 emissions of the Freelander 2 TD4_e are reduced by 8 percent, compared with the outgoing manual diesel Freelander 2. The 8 percent improvement equates to a CO2 emissions reduction of 15 g/km compared with the standard Freelander 2 TD4 manual (from 194 g/km to 179 g/km). In terms of fuel efficiency, consumption is improved from 37.7 mpg to 41.3 mpg. In heavy urban traffic, Land Rover engineers have measured fuel savings as high as 20 percent.
All this environmental friendliness now comes in a car that is 95 percent recyclable. The Freelander 2 TD4_e has not had an announcement for North America sales. Although we are enjoy green technologies and are starting to seek better fuel economy, it’s unclear if we are ready to buy diesel Land Rovers on a large scale.
The Land Rover LRX concept was first shown to the world back in January. It has since been making the car show tours, and now with its premier at the Pebble Beach Concours D’Elegance, Gerry McGovern, design director for Land Rover describes how the car fits into the company’s heritage.
The LRX is expected to be the replacement for the Freelander . The concept was shown as a hybrid diesel package to keep up with modern fuel economy demands. While this car is supposed to be a revolution in Land Rover design, remember this is the company that never had to go retro with the design of Range Rover, because it’s had only three generations in 38 years.
Land Rover is currently testing a series of ground-breaking Diesel ERAD Hybrid vehicles based on the Freelander 2, aimed at dramatically cutting CO2 and other emissions while still delivering characteristic Land Rover all-terrain performance.
Land Rover’s Diesel ERAD Hybrid was developed as part of a multi-million-pound project supported by the UK Government’s Energy Saving Trust, under the low carbon research and development programme. The objective is to develop a ‘parallel’ hybrid drive system compatible with all-terrain four-wheel-drive capability.
As parallel hybrids, the vehicles can be driven solely by electric power or by the diesel engine, or by a combination of both. The system is designed to reduce CO2 by more than 20 per cent under the NEDC test cycle and to cut it by a substantial 30 per cent in ‘real-life’ urban conditions where hybrid technologies really come into their own.
Due to significant customer demand, Land Rover will introduce a commercial derivative to the Freelander 2 product line-up. It will be showcased for the first time at the Commercial Vehicle Show at the NEC, Birmingham from April 15-17.
The Freelander 2 Commercial will be available in ’S’ and ’XS’ versions. The specification will be as a standard Freelander 2 at the respective trim levels, without rear seats and side airbags but with the addition of a full-height solid bulkhead with mesh panel, floor support frame, floor panel with lashing points, fixed rear side glass, rubber loadspace mat, tail door and side window guards and rear cargo lighting.
The ’XS’ derivative benefits from Land Rover’s acclaimed Terrain Response system, 17" alloys, powerfold mirrors, a full size spare wheel, front park distance control, part leather trim, automatic climate control and branded ICE.
According to AutoExpress, Land Rover is working on a seven-seat version of the Freelander 2 that will join the egular five-seat variant in around 18 months’ time. The new Freelander will compete with Peugeot 4007 and Chevrolet Captiva.
