The 2007 GS 350 builds upon its predecessor model’s already significant levels of performance, advanced luxury and intuitive technology, and it becomes the most powerful six-cylinder model in its segment. The handling performance of the 2007 GS 430’s potent 4.3-liter V8 is further optimized by a newly available active stabilizer system that automatically and seamlessly counteracts body sway to improve cornering performance.

Aluminum alloy 18-inch wheels are standard on the GS 430 and newly available for the rear-wheel-drive GS 350. All GS models offer the new Generation 5 Lexus DVD Navigation System for 2007, which features Bluetooth® compatibility, voice activation and a rear back-up camera. In addition, the Lexus Link® telematics system is now available for 2007 GS models.

V8 Is a Power Leader

The GS 430’s 4.3-liter double overhead-cam V8 engine produces 290 horsepower at 5,600 rpm and 319 lb.-ft. of torque at 3,400 rpm. Continuously Variable Valve Timing with intelligence (VVT-i) ensures excellent low- and mid-range power for easy highway merging. Both GS models achieve the EPA’s Ultra Low Emission Vehicle (ULEV) certification. All 2007 GS models maximize performance with a six-speed automatic transmission that features a sequential manual-shift mode.

Ultra-Advanced Dynamic Handling Control

The Lexus GS combines the best-proven design chassis systems with new dynamic handling technology. The double-wishbone front suspension and multilink rear suspension systems feature with geometry optimized to virtually eliminate unwanted wheel-angle changes during suspension movement. The result is a natural, confident feel that’s also spirited.

An Adaptive Variable Suspension (AVS) system, standard on and exclusive to the GS 430, provides four settings, including "sport," for tighter, more precise control. AVS can automatically select appropriate suspension damping for driving conditions. New for 2007, the GS 430 offers the advanced Active Stabilizer system that reduces body sway and enhances vehicle control during cornering. This new system uses electric actuators, rather than slower hydraulic units commonly found in similar systems.

An Electronic Control Unit (ECU) calculates the force needed to counter excess body sway, which is then applied to the stabilizer bars by the front and rear actuators. The Active Stabilizer system responds within 20 milliseconds, compared to 100 milliseconds for a competitor. The Lexus system consumes no power under normal operating conditions, whereas the competitor’s system consumes over 240 watts.

The GS 430 provides the performance enhancements and advanced vehicle control of the Lexus Vehicle Dynamics Integrated Management (VDIM) system. VDIM integrates and manages a host of handling technologies more quickly than previous dynamic handling technologies could. Combining input from a variety of sensors, VDIM is designed to anticipate the onset of a vehicle skid or slide and then help correct the situation with a combination of braking, throttle, and steering control in a way that is essentially transparent to the driver.

VDIM integration helps to provide precise management for the Electronically Controlled Brakes (ECB), Variable Gear Ratio Steering (VGRS), Electric Power Steering (EPS), Vehicle Stability Control (VSC), Anti-lock Braking System (ABS), Brake Assist (BA), Electronic Brake-force Distribution (EBD), and engine torque (via the electronically controlled throttle). New for 2007, the GS also allows the driver to disengage the stability and traction control via the Trac Off switch.

Electric Power Steering

Electric Power Steering (EPS) in the GS 430 provides precise electric power assist using a DC motor built into the steering gear housing, rather than hydraulic assist. Eliminating the hydraulic steering pump reduces engine drag, and the simplified steering system is lighter and more compact, as well.

Also in the GS 430, Variable Gear Ratio Steering (VGRS) can vary the steering from 2.7 turns lock-to-lock for low-speed maneuverability to a slower 3.2 turns lock-to-lock for highway-speed stability. VGRS also provides differential steering control, which helps correct for a delay in steering response, something that occurs in all vehicles, to help enhance driving feel in lane changes and other transitional maneuvers.

Intelligent and Powerful Brakes

Enhanced braking performance in both GS sedans begins with mechanical components that significantly increase brake friction and improve stopping power, while effectively eliminating brake fade. Brake Assist (BA), Electronic Brake-force Distribution (EBD) and the Anti-lock Braking System (ABS) help form a powerful safety front. EBD optimizes brake pressure at each wheel to help minimize body dive or sway during hard braking and cornering. Brake Assist is designed to determine if the driver is attempting emergency braking and, if the driver has not stepped firmly enough on the brake pedal to activate the ABS, it will apply maximum braking force until pedal pressure is released.

The GS 430’s Electronically Controlled Brakes (ECB) is a brake-by-wire system. ECB translates brake pedal pressure into electric signals that, via computer control, help provide precise and optimized braking in virtually any traction condition. Electronic control provides quick brake response when needed, helping the GS 430’s VDIM system to anticipate and help correct skids before they occur. The ECB system is backed by conventional hydraulic brake control in the unlikely event of electronic failure.

Lexus designers strive to keep controls simple and intuitive, avoiding needless complexity. A secure and distraction-free setting enables the driver to best appreciate the GS’ enhanced performance. The SmartAccess keyless entry and push-to-start ignition allow the driver to keep the access fob in a pocket or purse. Audio and climate-control systems are easy to understand and operate, and the GS locates controls that are used less frequently behind a dash panel on the left side of the steering wheel.

The gauge cluster features machined aluminum facings for a classic look. Highlighting the sporty nature of the GS and emphasizing a closer driver-and-machine connection, the quick-response tachometer moves more directly in concert with changes in engine rpm. The unique instrument panel lighting system relies on variable-transparency glass to minimize reflections from the gauge faces and to help optimize visibility in all lighting conditions.

A comprehensive interior lighting system provides just the right amount of light where the driver and passengers need it. All four windows offer one-touch up-and-down operation with jam protection. Both electrochromic auto-dimming side mirrors are power-retractable and feature automatic tilt-down when reverse gear is selected to aid in parking. The long, integrated lines of the next generation GS’s strong, dynamic design are enriched by subtle, intriguing contrasts in surface language, as exemplified by the relationship between the crisp elegance of the bonnet surface and the curvaceous, sculptural form of the front wing and bumper. Combined with vertical grille bars, four, independent, clear glass headlights and a deep front air dam, these diverse forms integrate seamlessly to reinforce the aggressive, sporting pedigree of the new sedan and instantly identify it as a member of the new Lexus generation.

“In designing the LF-S concept vehicle, we modified the disposition of the key frontal elements: In dropping the position of the grille in relation to the headlights we instigated a styling approach that will be common to future Lexus models, moving the marque towards a more dynamic feeling” adds Kengo Matsumoto, General Manager of the Lexus Design Division. “The GS continues this trend, creating a new, unique frontal balance and countering the preconceptions of grille and head light layout typified by other luxury brands. Creating a balance that goes against what seems natural is essential to the marque if Lexus design is to invigorate yet remain inherently simple”.

In profile the proportions of the GS’s long cabin, with blacked out B pillar above a curved, sweeping belt line, are unique to L-Finesse; the side windows expressing the fluid strokes of Japanese calligraphy. They create a dynamic ‘sling shot’ window graphic motif, emphasising the sculptural homogeny of the design whilst reinforcing the generous interior dimensions of the new sedan. Broad shouldered wheel arches accommodate either 17" or 18" alloy wheels whilst, astern, muscular flanks taper into powerful, new generation LED lamp clusters atop a strongly sculpted rear bumper and sporting, twin exhausts.

Allied to smooth, flowing bodywork, the addition of numerous aerodynamic under-body elements further promotes vehicle stability and helps reduce wind noise to a minimum. These include three engine undercovers, front and rear tyre farings, front, centre and rear floor covers, fuel tank side covers, as well as an aerodynamic differential cover plate. A discreet, boot mounted rear spoiler is also available to further improve aerodynamic performance at high speeds.

The next generation GS will be available in a range of 10 colours. Of the seven new colours within the range, four premium quality paint finishes have been developed exclusively for the new Lexus: Morello Red has a wet, glossy look with outstanding depth, Nasu Dark a strong, sporting allure, and Glacial Blue an enhanced depth which shines blue under strong sunlight. Tottori Sand is a multi-layer finish employing aluminium for the first base coat and artificial mica for the second, resulting in highlight brilliance and a greater change of colour intensity from highlight to shade.

Indulgent Luxury, Passionate Design

The next-generation GS performance sedans ushered in a new more passionate design direction for the brand. From an architectural standpoint, the new Lexus Lexus design language, dubbed L-finesse, is more sculptural and dynamic and eschews gimmickry for intriguing simplicity.
A 112.2-inch wheelbase, long hood, pulled-back cabin and short rear deck create a confident, powerful stance for the GS while a sloped, vertical grille surrounded by four independent headlamps visually connects the newer models with the previous generation while at the same time lending a distinct look that signals the brand’s design progression. The boldly styled lower valance features integrated foglamps, and a low 0.27 coefficient of drag (Cd) helps to minimize wind noise.

L-finesse extends to the interior as well with a passenger compartment designed to impart a unique spatial feeling that creates an intuitive and naturally comfortable environment. The end result is a cabin that is intimate without feeling confining. Ultra-premium wood, polished-metal accents and leather trim endow the GS interior with a lavish yet high-precision feel, with touchpoints that convey quality and controls that respond fluidly.

The GS customer can choose from among three interior leather color combinations: Ash with Black Bird’s-eye maple wood trim; Cashmere with Brown Bird’s-eye maple wood trim, or Black with walnut wood trim. Each combination includes a matching wood and leather-trim steering wheel and shift knob.

The next-generation GS sedans continue the Lexus tradition of providing luxury that envelopes the occupants without introducing unnecessary distractions. The standard Regency leather-trimmed, heated, 10-way power front seats (perforated leather on GS 430) are supportive and comfortably contoured for long-trip support. Fan ventilation for the seats is optional. A power-tilt and telescopic steering wheel helps ensure a comfortable driving position. The standard dual-zone climate-control system filters and deodorizes the air, and a standard rear power sunshade adds to passenger comfort on warm days.


The discreet hospitality fundamental to the Lexus ownership experience is further reinforced on first contact with the new GS by entry sequenced illumination. It features exterior and interior door handle lighting, door courtesy lamps, scuff plate spot lamps, front and rear seat and footwell lamps, map and reading lamps and a steering wheel and gear level spotlamp, all of which are automatically operated in sequence with the driver’s movements when approaching, entering and starting the car. White LED lamps are used for map, reading, glove compartment and centre console box lights, as well as providing bright, spot illumination of the seats, gear lever and steering, which are controlled independently.

The creation of a unique spatial perception within the passenger compartment is central to the L-finesse. Structural elements such as instruments, centre console, air vents, handles and armrests have been integrated within material finishes of the highest quality to create a modern design graphic which emphasises the continuous, threedimensional qualities of the interior space.

The transfer of the front grille image to the instrument panel centre console screen surround reflects the synergy of interior and exterior elements within the GS, whilst the surface composition of the interior expresses a richness of craftsmanship fundamental to the Japanese artistic tradition. High quality wood, elegant metal highlights and leather accents are combined with unprecedented, precision management of fit and finish throughout the cabin.

Even though the overall height of the new GS has been reduced by 5 mm, lower front and rear seat hip points -down by 10 mm and 5 mm respectively- have increased head clearance, whilst a longer seat slide combined with an increase in wheelbase of 50 mm offers increased legroom for taller occupants.

Moreover, an absence of side, rearward protrusions to the front seats allied to a rearward shift of the rear seat hip points by 20 mm affords significantly enhanced rear legroom.

The next generation GS is available in a range of three interior colour combinations, each with differing, carefully co-ordinated, real wood highlights: A Black-on-Black interior is complimented by a walnut wood finish, adding flair to a traditional sporting image. A two-tone, Black upper dashboard and Grey lower cabin finish combines with Black maple wood finish to provide a lighter, sports oriented environment. And a dark upper dashboard and Ivory lower cabin finish allied to dark Brown maple wood finish represents the ultimate in on-board luxury within the GS range.

The 10 way electrically powered front seats, available with both heating and fan assisted air-conditioning, combine snug lateral support with a broad shoulder area and a new, back board-type headrest design for improved comfort and luxury. The interior, including steering wheel, gear lever and door handle rebates, is upholstered throughout in the highest quality leather offered in choice of three trimcomplimentary colours; Black, Grey and Ivory.

Painstaking care has been taken to guarantee the ergonomic excellence, tactile quality and intuitive operability of controls and switchgear throughout the cabin, as well the optimum visibility of all instrumentation. A newly developed damping system has been developed to maintain the opening speed consistency of glove compartment, cup holder lids and ashtrays regardless of
ambient temperature, and even the sound quality of the glove compartment door operation has been further enhanced.

Particular attention has been paid to the reduction of external noise intrusion and the acoustic characteristics of the new GS’s cabin. An abundance of sound absorbent and insulating materials located throughout the interior envelope includes newly developed, high rigidity foam-type sheets to further reduce weight. The painstaking detailing of external bodywork seals, weather strips and door and window frame mouldings contribute to greatly reduced wind noise, whilst rubberised underbody floor covers and sound absorbing rear wheel arch liners minimise noise intrusion from water and gravel splatter.


The Smart entry system allows the driver to leave the GS electronic key in a pocket throughout any drive. When the electronic key comes within 1 metre of the locked door, the key communicates with a transmitter built into the door handle and matches ID codes, whereupon a touch of the handle either unlocks or locks the door. Similarly, the Smart Smart ID is automatically recognised on board, and the engine is switched on via a push-start button without further use of the key.

The new GS’s light sensitive Optitron instrument binnacle employs high quality, genuine metal, analogue-type dials, and boasts the world’s first use of Electronic Chromatic Device (ECD) glass to combat glare and enhance instrument legibility under all conditions. Using a light sensor built into the high mounted rear stop lamp, ECD automatically reduces the glass
transparency under direct sunlight by up to 70%. Under normal or snowy conditions ECD is inactive, increasing glass transparency for enhanced dial brightness.


Employing a newly developed variable compressor, the next generation GS features a highly efficient air-conditioning system. The electronic climate control offers independent left and right control, as well as automatic control of upper and lower cabin air zones, and automatic cool air bypass control. The use of humidity detection, as well as a complex neural network
which mimics the human nervous system, allows for more precise climate control and enhanced passenger comfort.

The extensive use of sound absorbent materials allied to a sound reflective profile within the ducting has significantly reduced blower noise, whilst the front door glazing defrosters are now located at the base of the front pillar for improved efficiency. Dial lighting is now fitted to airflow control vents for ease of use after dark. The dual-zone system also features an automatic recirculation mode which, linked to NOx detection, prevents the intrusion of exhaust gases into the cabin, and a clean air filter that incorporates active charcoal to reduce airborne particles, including pollen and dust, and remove odours.

In keeping with legendary standards already established by Lexus in the field of in-car high fidelity, the GS sound system features a magazine-less, 6-disc, in-dash CD changer and steering wheel mounted audio control switches. The stereo speaker system utilises no less than 10 individual speakers, including front and rear door mounted tweeters, a large, 250mm subwoofer and a newly adopted front centre speaker for improved definition and mid-range clarity.

The top of the range audio system is a peerless 350-watt, 14 speaker, Mark Levinson® Premium Surround System that delivers rich, powerful and pure sound. It incorporates additional squawkers and satellite speakers into the standard GS stereo array for enhanced surround sound quality.


Lexus Parking Assist Sensors (steering guided) The next generation GS clearance system combines information from both front and rear mounted sonars and a steering angle sensor to warn of object proximity during low speed and parking manoeuvres.

The system comprises four dual sonars installed on the front bumper, two back and two corner sonars on the rear bumper, a clearance sonar ECU, a buzzer and a proximity diagram on the GS’ multi-function display. Using obstacle position data related to the steering wheel angle, the system predicts the likelihood of contact, displaying object location and proximity, as well as suggested steering correction, on the multi-function display screen.

A back monitor is also available, automatically projecting a full colour, camera fed image of the view astern onto the vehicle’s EMV centre console screen whenever reverse gear is engaged. Integral guide monitor lines further assist with precise vehicle placement for curb clearance and parallel parking.

The engine features the ‘drive-by-wire’ ETCS-I (Electronic Throttle Control System-intelligent), which governs the throttle not only through pedal position, but also vehicle speed and engine rpm data. It operates in conjunction with the engine’s VVT-i, which ensures unrivalled tractability and smoothness by optimising valve overlap throughout the engine’s speed range,
hence maximising engine response under all driving conditions. Enhanced cylinder head cooling further increases combustion efficiency and contributes to a reduction in emissions.

Painstaking care has been taken to ensure the key Lexus attribute of near silent running and ultra-low Noise, Vibration and Harshness characteristics. The reduction in friction of moving parts within this lightweight, highly compact powerplant has made a significant contribution to both the minimising of NVH and greater fuel efficiency. Refinement of the air cleaner
element and resonator further reduce inlet noise, whilst the design of front and rear engine mountings reduces both vibration at idle and transmission noise.


Both powerplants are mated to a newly developed, electronically controlled, 6-speed closeratio ECT automatic transmission with sequential shift mode. The adoption of a new 6-speed gear train, allied to a newly developed torque converter, lock-up control from 3rd through 6th gears and deceleration downshift control, enhances operational quietness, engine performance and fuel efficiency. The transmission is also linked to the computerised engine management system, to momentarily reduce torque for even less discernible gear changes.

The A/T gearbox features an Artificial Intelligence (AI-SHIFT) control that automatically changes the gear shifting schedule according to road conditions and driving style. AI-SHIFT promotes a more comfortable yet responsive drive by avoiding unnecessary upshifting when travelling uphill, whilst automatically downshifting to provide optimum engine braking when
travelling downhill. Additionally, when the Power mode is selected, driver control is further enhanced by earlier gear shifting under both rapid acceleration and deceleration, and by the automatic holding of a gear when the accelerator pedal is released quickly, thus improving re-acceleration response. Moving the gear lever to the ‘S’ position within the gate allows the driver to manually select the available shift range by moving the lever forward to change up or backwards to change down.

Driving Dynamics

Within an all new platform of exceptional torsional stiffness, featuring a longer wheel base, wider rear track and short front and rear overhangs, the next generation Lexus GS Lexus GS integrates a new generation of powerful engines with a range of sophisticated technological innovations designed to realise sophisticated driving dynamics under all conditions. A sophisticated front double wishbone and rear multilink suspension format includes, on the Lexus GS 430, an new Adaptive Variable Suspension system (AVS), with a choice of two damper settings to optimise ride and handling in either ‘Sport’ or ‘Comfort’ mode.

The new, speed sensitive Electric Power Steering (EPS) incorporates, on the GS 430, Variable Gear Ratio Steering (VGRS) which alters the steering gear ratio according to vehicle speed, combining minimal low speed effort with improved feel and feedback as speeds increase. The VGRS system is linked to both the AVS system and Lexus’ unique Vehicle Dynamics Integrated Management system (VDIM), helping maintain vehicle stability and enhance driving enjoyment at the limit of the performance envelope.


The new Lexus GS has an all new platform which, despite being just 20mm longer than that of its predecessor features a 50mm increase in wheelbase length to 2850mm, and a 1540mm rear track -30mm wider than that of the previous model- to promote ideal weight distribution.

The next generation GS platform comprises a highly rigid, continuous laser welded body structure featuring a weight saving aluminium bonnet and front and rear suspension members. The comprehensive use of thickened cross members allied to extensive bracing within the floor platform offers enhanced torsional rigidity to significantly improve both driving dynamics and impact safety. The frequent use of differential thickness joints further optimises weight reduction and high skeletal strength.

Front and rear crash boxes are installed behind both bumpers to reduce body deformation in the event of a minor collision. Body-deforming energy is absorbed by the front and rear modules, which are screw-attached to simply removal and repair. The incorporation of anti corrosion plates throughout, allied to the extensive application of anti-corrosion wax and panel sealant, affords the new GS bodywork unparalleled rust protection. In addition, resin door bottom mouldings elicit a high anti-chipping performance.


The new sports sedan is comprehensively equipped with the most technologically advanced active and passive safety systems available on the market today. A new, Pre-Crash Safety system (PCS) pre-emptively optimises front seat belt and emergency braking systems to help reduce collision damage and injury, whilst a complementary Adaptive Cruise Control system (ACC) automatically matches the speed of the new GS to that of the vehicle ahead.

The new GS benefits from up to 10 airbags, and rear seatbelt pre-tensioners are fitted as standard. Intelligent Adaptive Front Lighting (I-AFS) enhances visibility through bends, whilst the new Lexus’ front bumper, cowl and corrugated sheet bonnet have been carefully designed to offer enhanced pedestrian protection in the event of a collision. PRE-CRASH SAFETY (PCS) AND ADAPTIVE CRUISE CONTROL (ACC) The new Lexus offers the most sophisticated Pre-Crash Safety system (PCS) available on the market today. The PCS system can help reduce collision damage and injury.

It features a millimetre-wave radar sensor to detect obstacles in front of the car, allied to a pre-collision system computer which, via numerous sensors, monitors vehicle speed, steering angle and yaw rate inputs to help determine in advance whether an impending collision is unavoidable. In such an eventuality, the system preemptively retracts the front seatbelts and pre-empts the Emergency Brake Assist system for maximum braking force and optimum reduction of collision speed.

Allied to enlarged, 334mm ventilated discs to the front and 310mm ventilated discs to the rear, high grip coefficient brake pads further increase the GS braking efficiency. Operating in conjunction with the Adaptive Variable Suspension (AVS), the new Lexus GS 430’ PCS system also automatically regulates the suspension’s shock absorber rates to minimise vehicle nose diving under emergency braking.

Complementary to the PCS system, the new GS also features an Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC) system. The system offers two modes: constant speed control, and vehicle-to-vehicle distance control. The constant speed control functions in the manner of a conventional cruise control system. Capable of differentiating between vehicles directly ahead of the Lexus Lexus and those in an adjacent lane, the vehicle-to-vehicle distance control system employs the PCS millimetre-wave radar sensor, allied to constant speed, decelerator, follow-up and accelerator controls, to automatically slow the GS, match the speed of the vehicle in front and, once the road is clear ahead, accelerate to the previously selected cruising speed. Via a steering wheel mounted switch, the driver can select long, middle or short vehicle-tovehicle distances. The system control settings are indicated on the GS’s multi-function display.

With comprehensive status data provided by sensors throughout the vehicle, VDIM integrates the GS’s Electronically Controlled Brake (ECB) four-wheel independent braking, Anti-Lock Brakes (ABS), Electronic Brakeforce Distribution (EBD), Traction Control (TRC) and Vehicle Stability Control (VSC) active safety systems with the Electronic Power Steering (EPS) and Variable Gear Ratio Steering (VGRS) systems.

By the application of integrated control of all the elements related to vehicle movement, including motor torque, brakes and steering, VDIM not only optimises the activation of braking, stability and traction control systems, but is also able to further improve the overall dynamic performance of the vehicle.

Moreover, whereas conventional safety systems are only activated immediately after a limit of the vehicle’s performance envelope has been reached, VDIM activates control before that limit is realised. As a result, the limits of the vehicle’s performance threshold have been expanded, whilst offering smoother vehicle behaviour at this threshold through less obtrusive
intervention and, hence, a more pleasurable drive.

For example, on a road surface with differing degrees of grip on either side of the vehicle, sudden braking will cause the vehicle to pull towards the side with the higher friction coefficient. Via the EPS and VGRS, VDIM automatically regulates the steering angle to counteract the disparate, left and right-side braking forces, minimising the driver steering input necessary to maintain straight line braking.

In the case of oversteer, the VDIM system automatically activates a counter-steer function within the EPS and VGRS systems which, operating in tandem braking control, helps control a skid without the need for the driver to turn the steering wheel. The VGRS actuator generates stabilising moment by restraining the front wheel steering angle depending on the extent of lateral slip. Under such conditions, the combined use of brake and steering control reduces the deceleration inherent in traditional braking systems, promoting a smoother, more sporting driving experience.

In moderate understeer conditions, engine output and braking control are combined to automatically stabilise the vehicle. In the case of excessive understeer, however, an increase in the steering gear ratio by the VGRS allied to steering torque assistance by the EPS automatically curbs excessive turning of the front wheels and, in conjunction with the VDIM system’s engine output and brake controls, retains optimum vehicle stability.

The Lexus GS benefits from up to 10 airbags; two-stage Supplemental Restraint System (SRS) front airbags, driver and front passenger knee airbags, front and rear side airbags, as well as both front and rear side curtain airbags. The advanced, Supplementary Restraint System controls variable-force front airbags. Sensors determine the severity on an impact and, hence, the force with which the airbags are deployed.

The new GS also features, as standard, the Intelligent Adaptive Front Lighting System (I-AFS), which swivels the High Intensity Discharge (HID) headlamps through up to 15 degrees, helping to illuminate a bend as the driver steers into it.

And a Tyre Pressure Warning System (TPWS) can detect a loss of pressure in one or more tyres, notifying the driver via a dashboard mounted warning light.
