2014 Lexus IS F

The Lexus IS F hit the market in the 2008 model year as Lexus ’ answer to the M3 and the Mercedes-Benz C63 AMG . With its more aggressive look and fire-breathing 5.0-liter, V-8 engine that produced 416 horsepower and 371 pound-feet of torque. It’s power was certainly enough to put it in the M3’s class, but it simply didn’t have the following of the legendary M3.

We were all hoping to see the IS F receive the same redesign that the other models within the IS lineup — IS 250 and IS 350 — but oddly enough, Lexus chose to carry the IS F into 2014 with the same design as 2013.

Fortunately, Lexus did add in a few minor updates to the 2014 IS F, but this is limited to just revised standard features, a new spoiler and a better-equipped interior.

Are these updates enough to retain the attention of buyers, or will they simply overlook the old-looking IS F?

Click past the jump to find out.

Exterior

Lexus IS F
Lexus IS F
Lexus IS F

We’ll start with the most disappointing news on the 2014 IS F. Lexus is carrying over the exterior look of the IS F with not a single notable change. This means that the IS F will sit next to the completely updated Lexus lineup without any of the new goodies, like the spindle grille and tight body lines. Rather, the IS F will be nearly indistinguishable from its debut year, which is a rather odd move, given the soon-to-be-released M3 will carry a fairly significant update.

The lack of a new body can only mean that Lexus is running into big-time issues with getting the new IS F completed. So, expect the 2014 model to only hang on for a few months before Lexus rolls out the fully revised 2015 model.

The only changes — yes, there are two — is the addition of LED fog lights and a new carbon-fiber rear spoiler.

Interior

Lexus IS F

Also basically carried over into 2014 is the IS F’s interior, but it did receive a few more updates than the exterior. The 2014 IS F’s interior features a two-tone upholstery design and aluminized composite trimming.

The biggest update to the interior for 2014 is the addition of "F" logos on the headrests. These "F" logos accompany the same ones found on the 2013 model’s steering wheel and rear-center console. The 2014 model also gains Alcantara covering on the door panels and center console cover, black full-aniline leather seats, and black Alcantara inserts with red perforations and black-leather-trimmed headrests on the red leather seating package.

Drivetrain, Suspension and Brakes

Lexus IS F

Under the hood, the 2014 IS F continues with the same 5.0-liter, V-8 engine that the 2013 model had. This gives the peppy sedan at 416 horsepower at 6,600 rpm and 371 pound-feet of torque at 5,200 rpm.

The V-8 powerplant hooks up to an eight-speed, Sport Direct Shift automatic transmission with steering-wheel-mounted paddle shifters, and the power travels through a Torsen differential before hitting the rear wheels. The transmission offers up two modes: "M" and "D."

In "D," the transmission works as normal, and is suitable for comfortable road use. When you drop it into "M" mode, however, the IS F becomes the racing sedan we all want it to be, as it holds gears to the 6,800 rpm redline, shifts gears in one-tenth of a second and blips the throttle on downshift to match the transmission speed and engine rpm for excellent exit speed in the twist.

Up front, the IS F features a double-wishbone suspension setup, and the rear features a multi-link setup. To help set the IS F apart from the rest of the IS lineup, Lexus adds in special rear control arms, high-rate springs, monotube dampers and larger stabilizer bars.

The suspension system teams up with a staggered-rim setup that puts 19-by-8.5-inch rims up front and 19-by-9.5-inch wheels out back. These rims are wrapped up in 225/40R19 and 255/35R19 tires, respectively.

Finally, the fun comes to end end by way of a Brembo brake system that includes a set of six-pot, aluminum caliper up front squeezing 14.2-inch vented and drilled discs, and twin-pot calipers out back putting the squeeze to a set of 13.6-inch rotors that are also vented and drilled.

Tying all of these systems together is Lexus’ Vehicle Dynamics Integrated Management (VDIM) system, which anticipates skidding or sliding and adjusts the braking, steering and throttle to help prevent the IS F from losing control.

Safety

The NHTSA and IIHS have yet to put the IS F to the test, but they did test the 2014 IS 250. The NHTSA gave the 2014 IS 250 an overall five-star rating, with its only flaw being a four-star rating in the frontal crash test.

The IIHS, on the other hand, gave the IS 250/350 a rather low rating, as it received a "Good" rating in the front and side crash tests, but score just "Acceptable " in roof strength and head restraints and seats, and "Poor" in the small overlap rating. These ratings put it at the bottom of the midsize luxury safety list last year.

Competition

2014 BMW M3

BMW M3

BMW literally just released some of the official details on the 2014 M3, which included the fact that the M3 will use an in-line six-cylinder M TwinPower Turbo engine that produces about 430 horsepower and about 369 pound-feet of torque.

On top of the new engine, the M3 also gets the new BMW look that includes the to-the-grille headlights and the slightly revised kidney grille. Plain and simple, the new M3 trumps the carryover IS F by a long shot.

2014 Cadillac CTS Vsport

Cadillac CTS Sedan

Also revised for 2014 is the Cadillac CTS, which ushers in the all-new Vsport variant. This beastly sedan not only looks stunning, but it also pumps out 420 horsepower from its 3.6.-liter, twin-turbocharged V-6 engine. This is enough to sprint the CTS Vsport to 60 mph in just 4.6 seconds.

Conclusion

Lexus IS F

We’re scratching our heads here about Lexus carrying the IS F over for 2014. With the 2014 IS 250 and 350 boasting an all-new design, the IS F will simply look old on dealership lots. Why buy a new one when you can roll over to the used car lot and snag up a 2008 model that looks and performs identically? We’re certainly not fans and we’re sure that Lexus is a little concerned (embarrassed) that the IS F will stand out like a sore thumb on dealer lots. We’re also sure that the 2015 IS F will likely roll out very early in 2014.

LOVE IT
  • Still mighty powerful
  • Some nice touches to improve the interior
  • Quick to 60 mph
LEAVE IT
  • Ugh that body looks really, really old...
  • Same old drivetrain since 2008
  • Lexus should have just skipped the 2014 model year instead of rolling out the same old model

Press Release

Lexus IS F High-Performance Sedan Delivers a Thrilling Driving Experience

Lexus IS F

The 2014 Lexus IS F delivers a 416-horsepower wallop on road or track, handling both driving environments with equal aplomb. While bristling with track-focused engine and chassis performance technology, the 2014 IS F also remains comfortable and practical to drive every day, a true dual-purpose machine.

When it arrived for model year 2008, the IS F not only shook up the status quo among high-performance sport sedans, but also foreshadowed the brand’s LFA supercar, which recently completed a 500-unit run. The same passion for performance continues to define the IS F, which for 2014 remainson a thoroughly optimized version of the 2nd-generation IS platform.
The IS F gains interior and trim changes in its seventh year.

What’s New for 2014

  • LED foglamps (bulbs changed to LEDs)
  • Carbon fiber rear spoiler
  • All headrests embossed with “F” logo
  • Alcantara trim (black) added to doors and center console cover

Exhilarating Performance at Every Turn

Lexus IS F

The Lexus IS F combines blistering acceleration with brilliantly controlled chassis performance, yielding a highly satisfying machine for driving enthusiasts of all skill levels.

The muscular rumble issued by the low-restriction dual-exhaust system, which terminates in distinctive stacked quad diffusers, announces the presence of a special high-performance version of the Lexus 5.0-liter V8. Engineered specifically for the IS F, the aluminum V8 emphasizes both high output and high durability. The engine produces a rousing 416 horsepower at 6,600 rpm and 371 lb.-ft. of peak torque at 5,200 rpm. While able to provide an instant rush of power and sustain high engine speeds for track driving, the 5.0-liter V8 remains utterly composed and refined in everyday driving.

The eight-speed Sport Direct-Shift automatic transmission proves a willing partner on road or track. For maximum performance, the driver can shift manually with steering wheel paddle shifters in either “D” or “M” modes, but in “M” mode, the transmission will hold each gear to the 6,800-rpm redline and execute ultra-quick shifts in one-tenth of a second. In “M” mode, the transmission “blips” the throttle to match engine rpm to vehicle speed, which helps maintain traction and control, especially when slowing through curves.

Selecting Normal, Sport or Snow driving modes alters the car’s dynamic control systems to sharpen performance or increase comfort and traction. The driver faces a gauge cluster with a large central tachometer, similar to that in the LFA supercar. In order to perfect the IS F’s road/track dual persona, Lexus conducted IS F development work not only at Germany’s renowned Nürburgring Nordschleife racetrack, but also at Circuit Paul Ricard in France and Fuji Speedway and the Higashi-Fuji Technical Center in Japan. The shape of Turn 1 at Fuji, in fact, inspired the car’s “F” badge design as homage to its home track.

Numerous track-proven modifications to the double-wishbone front suspension and multi-link rear suspension configurations endow the IS F with uncanny ability through curves while maintaining refined rode comfort. Special rear control arms, high-rate springs, monotube dampers and large-diameter stabilizer bars are among the changes made to this platform for the IS F.

As part of the IS F development program, Lexus worked with Michelin and Bridgestone to develop tires specifically for the car’s 170-mph track capability. The “staggered” wheels and tires follow racecar convention, with wider, lower profile tires on the rear. (The front wheels are 19 x 8.5-inch, with 225/40R19 tires and 19 x 9.5-inch in the rear, with 255/35R19 tires.) You’ll find Brembo® brakes on the world’s best high-performance cars, including, of course, the Lexus IS F. In front, rigid, powerful six-piston aluminum calipers grip 14.2-inch ventilated and drilled rotors, while the 13.6-inch ventilated, drilled rear rotors use two-piston calipers.

A Torsen® rear differential helps provide additional traction in spirited driving. The IS F deftly integrates an array of advanced chassis control systems to help maximize braking and traction performance in the IS F. Specifically, engineers calibrated the brand’s Vehicle Dynamics Integrated Management (VDIM) system to support the car’s high dynamic capabilities.

By integrating the car’s dynamic systems, and by combining input from a variety of sensors, VDIM doesn’t merely react to hazardous handling situations but rather can anticipate the onset of a vehicle skid or slide. The system can help correct the situation with a combination of braking, steering and throttle control.

How does it all work in performance driving? Seamlessly. Push the Lexus IS F aggressively through a corner, and VDIM helps prevent the inside rear wheel from spinning, transferring more power to the outside wheel to help maintain traction and momentum.

In Sport mode, VDIM increases steering feel and allows higher dynamic thresholds before intervening with confidence.

High Visual Impact

Lexus IS F

As if the IS F’s bellowing exhaust note weren’t enough to express the car’s presence, the car’s wide-body design also does much to convey the high-performance capability. The widened fenders were needed to clear the 19-inch low-profile tires, and other body modifications combine function with form, as well. The raised center section in the hood clears the big V8.

Air management for engine and brake cooling can be seen in large upper and lower mesh-type grilles, along with brake cooling ducts in the lower grille and air outlets in the front fenders, where you’ll also spot the discrete silver, black and blue F badge.

Interior Designed for the Performance Driver

The interior of the IS F features an exclusive design treatment highlighted by aluminized composite trim, striking two-tone upholstery, main gauges, unique steering-wheel design and other special surface treatments. The “F” logo is discretely showcased on the steering wheel, rear-center console and all seat headrests.

Safety/Security Features

  • Passive-safety technology in the IS F begins with a reinforced passenger compartment that helps protect the occupants with front-and-rear crush structures. In addition to advanced dual-stage front airbags and front seat-mounted side airbags, the Lexus Supplemental Restraint System (SRS) includes side-curtain airbags that extend from A-pillar to C-pillar, plus knee airbags for the driver and the front passenger.
  • The available Pre-Collision System (PCS) can help reduce collision damage. The package includes Dynamic Radar Cruise Control, which uses millimeter-wave radar to measure and maintain a pre-set distance from a vehicle traveling ahead. PCS relies on the radar sensor to detect obstacles in front of the car. The PCS computer, taking sensor inputs from vehicle speed, steering angle and yaw rate, is designed to determine whether a collision is unavoidable. In such a situation, PCS preemptively retracts front seat belts and pre-initializes Brake Assist so that increased braking will be applied the instant the driver depresses the pedal.
