While some limousines are owned by wealthy individuals, many are owned by governments to transport senior politicians, by large companies to transport executives, or by broadcasters to transport guests. Most limousines, however, operate as livery vehicles, providing upmarket competition to taxicabs. The word limousine is derived from the name of the French region Limousin, where the inhabitants wore a hood perceived to be similar to the profile of the car.

Daimler unveiled today the facelift version for the Maybach line-up. The company made chances to the exterior design, interior comfort, but also added a more powerful engine. This is the last chance Daimler offered to Maybach before making a final decision on its future.

The exterior chances include a new chrome radiator grille, a new front bumper and redesigned hood, re-styled side mirrors and new rear light clusters and new new-look 21-spoke, 19-inch wheels for the standard models and get 12-spoke, 20-inch wheels for the S ones. Also the 57S and 62S models are 11 mm longer and 17 mm wider.

On the interior the limousine gets a hand-braided or crystal-encrusted seat piping, a 19-inch rear screen, a perfume atomiser and a wireless internet function.

The 57S and 62S models are powered by a 12-cylinder engine that develops a total of 630 HP. The 57 and 62 models get a 6.0 liter V12 supercharged and turbocharged engine that develops 542bhp. Fuel consumptions and CO2 emissions have been lowered in both models.

Apparently, even if you’re the most powerful man in the world, you still don’t get everything you want. Turns out that in picking out his own personal presidential limousine, our President Barack Obama initially wanted it to come with a hybrid drivetrain.

But the Commander-in-Chief’s request was unceremoniously shot down by - of all people - the Secret Service. Yep, the very same people that swore to protect him down to their last breath.

Of course, the Secret Service was justified for putting a brakes on Obama’s hybrid limo, saying that in cases of emergency, a hybrid engine wouldn’t be able to pack as much power as an all-fuel drivetrain, especially since the the presidential limo isn’t exactly what people would refer to as a compact and lightweight ride.

As far as reports we’ve received regarding what’s really under the hood of the president’s limo, we’re quite certain that it’s not a hybrid drivetrain, much to the chagrin of the president.

We like the way the president is pushing hybrid vehicles into the forefront considering that it’s more eco-friendly than its gas-guzzling counterparts. But on the other hand, the Secret Service does have a point. In case of emergencies, you’re going to need some serious power underneath the hood of the presidential limousine.

And a hybrid drivetrain doesn’t really qualify as having some ’serious power’.

Maybach 62S Landaulet

Cosmetic surgery is quite popular nowadays. In fact, even Mercedes’ luxury brand, Maybach, will be seeing a little bit of a facelift before its ultimate descent into the automobile graveyard. As the next generation of the Mercedes S class gets taken to the next level, Maybach will turn into a thing of the past, but not before getting some new grilles and LED lights on its current three models. After the Maybach’s debut at the Beijing Auto Show in April, sources say that Mercedes will let the brand slip away into darkness and bring to light the new, higher tech S class.

The new S class is said to debut in 2014 and are rumored to contain many of the features found in the F800. The technologies include:

Traffic Jam Assist: A cruise control system that accelerates and decelerates by itself and can even follow turns up to 25MPH.

Range on Map System: Shows about how far the car can travel as a 360-degree graphic.

HMI Control System: This unique technology will record the hand gestures of the driver so it can then interpret the applications the driver wants to operate.

Multi-Drive Platform: Can be fitted with either a hydrogen fuel cell or plug-in hybrid system.

The Maybach nameplate has been around for a century, however ever since the brands rebirth under Mercedes Benz over a decade ago, their lineup of ultra exclusive luxury limousines have remained very much the same, with the exception of one over the top twin turbocharged V12 powered sports coupe, the Exelero concept. It doesn’t hurt that Maybach is the top dog as far as million dollar transportation is concerned, and the apparent lack of competition hasn’t pushed them to constantly update their vehicles.

Reaffirming that fact Mercedes CEO Dieter Zetsche announced at a conference in Abu Dhabi that the German automaker is still thinking about the posh luxury brand. According to Dr. Z, "the contribution of Maybach is not significant or relevant but there are only two players in this market and we are one of them. But there are no plans in the long run." What we do know is that in the short term Maybach owners will be greeted by some new faces and that as part of their product sharing strategy, both the 57 and 62 will receive numerous assistance and infotainment systems from the current Mercedes Benz S-Class. However Mercedes has not yet decided whether or not they will go as far as next generation versions for the two models.

Hyundai turned a few heads at the Miami Auto Show by displaying the all new Equus luxury limousine on the turntable in the center of their booth. While this was actually a Korean spec Equus, it still managed to impress the judges at the show. The new Hyundai is scheduled to go on sale sometime next year for close to $50,000; and while Hyundai only expects to sell 20,000 units per, after sitting in the passenger’s seat we think they shouldn’t have a problem. The car could get toned down for the U.S. Market, after all Korean’s are crazy for chrome, but we just hope the hood ornament stays. It looks like they cut they head off of one of Rolls Royce’s flying ladies and then streamlined her physique in order for it to guide Korean executives as they recline in comfort in the spacious back seat, catch up on some work with the wood tray table or simply relax by watching the fold out television monitor. The Equus Equus is an elegant vehicle from Hyundai and is the next logical step for a company who has just enjoyed so much success with the current award winning Genesis sedan.

The soon-to-be-released Hyundai Equus Stretch Edition is on its way to a number of countries in the world, although it looks like the US will not be one of them, at least that’s what Hyundai USA said. In a statement they released, Hyundai USA said that “we have no comment on plans for such an edition in the U.S.”

While the future of the Equus limousine in the US remains a point of debate, Hyundai has long confirmed that the standard Equus edition would make its way to the US where it is being positioned as a contender to the country’s luxury car market that has long been dominated by Lexus and BMW.

In the event that the Equus limousine does make it to America, it’s
interesting to note that the car will be priced significantly higher than that of the Lexus LS 460 and the BMW 750i . As it stands right now, the price for the Equus limo goes at around $110,000 as opposed to $75,000 for the LS 460 and $85,000 for the 750i.

As other automakers are looking towards smaller more compact models to get through these tough economic times, the Korean car builder is rejoicing their recent success and are rewarding the world with the Hyundai Equus , an even better luxury bargain than last year’s Car of the Year Winning Genesis Sedan. The new to the U.S. Equus is well known as the automaker’s flagship sedan, being powered by a 366 HP V8 that gets as many as 28 MPG. The concept is similar to the Genesis , except the Equus has a bit more space inside.

Hyundai Equus Stretch Edition

Adding excess to success, Hyundai has just released the Equus Limousine. Pumping a little more volume into their flagship luxury sedan by stretching it to almost a foot longer than the competition, Hyundai has come up with an affordable, attractive and sensible alternative to their German and Japanese luxury car building cousins. The stretched Equus Equus is distinguishable by its horizontal cross bar grill that is exclusive to Hyundai’s most expensive product. For the first time, the South Korean automaker will power on of their cars with the all new 5.0 Liter Tau V8 that makes as much as 400 HP, making the Equus Limousine more powerful than both the Lexus LS 460L and Mercedes S 500L.

Rest assured up and coming Korean hip hop super stars, Hyundai is also releasing a bullet proof version of the long wheelbase model. For those who aren’t so fortunate, but still want to ride in spacious luxury and comfort, Hyundai will offer an optional cost reducing 3.8 Liter V6 that will bring prices down closer to the $100,000 mark. Now going down to your Hyundai dealer and handing over a thousand Benjamins might be hard to fathom, but with being able to say that you are riding around in the same vehicle as the President of Korea might be worth it.

If you’re the type who has always wondered what kind of car the US president rides on, then you should head out to your local bookstore and buy ‘President’s Secret Service: Behind the Scenes with Agents in the Line of Fire and the Presidents They Protect’.

While the book doesn’t entirely dwell on cars, it does provide a detailed look at the official presidential ride: a 2009 Cadillac limousine.

Naturally, a car that had the president of the United States inside should be far from ordinary, and this particular Cadillac limousine is unlike any other. The car, which has been coined as ‘The Beast’, was built on top of a GMC truck chassis making it tougher and stronger than most limos out on the road these days.
