The German sports-car manufacturer Porsche will be unveiling a new “mid-engined sports car” next week at the Los Angeles Auto Show. This new model will be shown along side two new 911 variants, the GTS, and the Speedster . We don’t have any official word on what this new model might be, but we believe it to be the new Cayman CS .

We have written numerous reports on the CS, which will be powered by a 3.4-liter flat-six with 333 horsepower. This model will feature the same characteristics as the Boxster, with lightness being the name of the game. Sources indicate that the CS should shed about 162 to 184 pounds from the stock vehicle. It will do this by ditching door handles and adding lightweight alloy wheels and aluminum body bits. This should make the CS one heck of a track day vehicle.

We should have the official information next week when the car is launched at the LA show.

A Bentley Continental GT is a car that doesn’t need any fine-tuning because, by itself, it’s already good enough to be considered a prized vehicle. But every so often, a tuning house tries to up the ante by giving a car the stature of the Continental GT even more reason to be beloved.

That’s what Platinum Collision Center did with this particular Bentley , a Continental GT Mulliner. Calling it the Widebody GT Premier4509 Platinum Edition, PCC gave the car a complete widebody overhaul, complete with a new front bumper, a rear bumper with a new diffuser, side skirts, a new hood, a rear wing, and a set of of new wheels. The interior was also given doses of carbon fiber, including on the entire center console.

For now, the boys at PCC only gave the Continental GT a GT Haus-sourced MEISTERSCHAFT full exhaust system, although they did say that they’re going to upgrade the car with turbos and re-program the ECU in time for the car’s appearance at the LA Auto Show .

We’ll give you more details about this car as soon as information becomes available.

Now that the buzz of SEMA 2010 is quietly dying down, the auto world will now set its attention to the forthcoming LA Auto Show on November 19th.

One brand that’s scheduled to be in attendance is Cadillac and it’s just come to our attention that the automaker will be bringing an all-new concept car to the City of Angels.

Not surprisingly, the company has kept mum on what kind of car this is going to be so all your guesses are going to be as good as ours. Short of saying, we don’t know what it’s going to be. It could be anything really – maybe it’s even the Aera Concept (pictured above) that they’ve entered at the auto show’s Design Challenge – but for now, all we’ve got are tons of speculation.

In some ways, it’s a good thing not knowing what to expect because it keeps that element of surprise at a high-level. Who knows, these guys might be bringing a car that’s going to revolutionize the world. Highly unlikely, we know, but that’s the beauty of being in the dark when it comes to concept vehicles.

Back in 2005, Porsche was looking for something to slot in the middle of the 911 and the Boxster. It had to be pretty darn good, as the 911 is a legend among car fans and the Boxster was a hit for the automaker. What they came up with was the Cayman .

First launched in the 2006 model year, the Cayman is a coupe derived from Porsche’s second generation Boxster convertible, yet it looks like a 911 in the front. The name Cayman is an alternate spelling of caiman, a reptile in the same family as the alligator. Some thought the name came from the Cayman Islands, but that’s incorrect.

After the first generation Cayman was debuted and widely accepted, the second was introduced on February 21, 2009. The power was upped, the transmission was replaced, and the overall performance was vastly superior to the previous model. As an example, this baby 911 could hit 60 mph in just 5.2 seconds.

UPDATE 12/08/2010: After the LA Auto Show came and went with the unveiling of the Porsche Cayman R, our hopes of seeing a Cayman Club Sport were just about dashed. However, in an interview with Autocar, chief of mid-engined cars, Hans-Jurgen Wohler confirms that the idea of producing a Cayman is still on the table giving us just the sliver of hope we need to hold on to the idea of a CS version for the Cayman.

For this year’s Los Angeles Auto Show Design Challenge, the task was to design a 1,000 lb, four-seat vehicle. It can’t just be any vehicle, however. The newly designed vehicle must be both comfortable and safe, and it also has to deliver satisfactory driving performance without sacrificing the styling consumers’ demand. Talk about a tall order! It’s not going to be easy, but, hey, that’s why they call it a challenge.

This year’s entries are different from previous years because Mercedes ’ Germany and Japan studios have joined in the mix to offer a different perspective than before. Among the entries of this year’s competition are a Cadillac Aera, Honda Air, Maybach DRS “Den-Riki-Sha”, Mazda MX-0, Mercedes-Benz Biome, Nissan iV, Smart 454, and Nori concept. The entries range from vehicles made from organic materials and powered by compressed air to futuristic models relying on the latest high-tech advancements.

The winning design will be announced on November 18th during the Design Los Angeles Conference at the Los Angeles Auto Show. In order to win, the designs not only have to meet the weight constraint (1,500 pounds maximum with occupants), but they also have to be judged on the artistic beauty, comfort, uniqueness of design, roadworthiness, sustainability, performance, and user-friendliness of the vehicle.

After being previewed by the Saab 9-4X BioPower , the third model in Saab ’s line-up will make its world debut at the LA Auto Show. The new 9-4X will be placed in looks and size between the 9-3X all-rounder and new 9-5 sedan and will go on sale in May 2011.

The new 9-4X will be offered with a choice of V6 engines, naturally-aspirated or turbocharged. The entry level gets a 3,0 liter version with 265 HP, while the Aero version will be powered by a 300 HP 2.8-liter version with direct injection for twin-scroll turbocharging. Both engines are mated to six-speed automatic transmissions under adaptive, electronic control. The new 9-4X will be offered with Saab’s advanced all-wheel-drive system, Saab XWD, and DriveSense adaptive chassis control.

"The 9-4X significantly broadens the appeal of the Saab brand,” says Saab Automobile CEO Jan Ake Jonsson. "It gives us entry to the fast-growing crossover segment with a vehicle that reflects our brand values in key areas, such as progressive Scandinavian design and sporty, responsible driving performance. The 9-4X is an exciting package and we’re confident it will appeal to many existing Saab owners, as well as win new customers for the brand."
