While a number of the world’s biggest carmakers have all come down to the LA Auto Show to showcase their latest cars, a number of lesser-known brands have also been making waves at the event, one of which is the Capstone CMT 380 .

Designed and created by Electronic Arts’ Chief Creative Director – awesome job, by the way – Richard Hillerman, the CMT 380 is a hybrid supercar that draws its electric power from 96 lithium-ion batteries coupled with a 30 kw bio-diesel-powered micro turbine giving the hybrid supercar an electronically limited top speed of 150mph and a 0-60mph time of 3.9 seconds. The CMT 380’s electric mode tops at around 80 miles but when the turbine enters the picture, the car’s range skyrockets to around a more-than-worth-it 500 miles.

If the name ‘Capstone’ rings a bell to any of you, they’re company that specializes on providing micro turbines to power office blocks. It might be far-off from the auto industry, but who’s to say they can’t try their luck, right?

The Japanese sport compact maker Subaru has just announced pricing for the 2010 Impreza WRX STI Special Edition that was revealed just a few days ago. With a scheduled production run of only 125 units, this special edition STI will be in high demand when it goes on sale in the spring of 2010 starting at $32,995. What is even better about the Spec C inspired STI is that it will cost $2,000 less than the standard 2010 WRX STI.

2010 Subaru Impreza WRX STI Special Edition prices announced

Aside from the high performance suspension, the Special Edition differs from the standard WRX STI with a few cost cutting options like a set of halogen headlamps rather than HID units; the 6 CD 10 speaker system turns into a single disc player with 4 speakers; manual air conditioning in place of automatic climate control and side mirrors without integrated signals. However if getting around a track as fast as possible is what you are after it is very unlikely that you will miss any of those creature comforts.

There is no place like the world’s stage for an automaker to showcase the abilities and talents of their team and products. It was back in 1991 when the Japanese automaker Mazda entered the 24 Hours of LeMans for the 13th time in 18 years. Up until that point their best finish was in 7th place, something they managed to do twice, in 1987 and 1989. However in 1991 things were different; the race car was the al new four rotor 787B being driven by famed racing drivers Johnny Herbert, Volker Weidler and Bertrand Gachot. With the ex Formula One ace Jacky Ickx heading up the team, the mighty 787B managed to finish first at the end of the race twice around the clock, making Mazda the first Japanese automaker to earn an outright victory at the historic race.

Mazda 2Evil Special Concept

As a tribute to that car, Mazda has unveiled the Mazda 2Evil Special Concept at the Los Angeles Auto Show. The compact Mazda features the same significant number 55 and an equally wild Ceramic Grey metallic paint scheme complete with subtle motor sports inspired graphics just like the iconic Group C race car.

The Mazda 2 Evil Special Concept features a few modifications to the body, consisting of a more aggressive front chin spoiler and a deeper rocker panels for improved aerodynamics and a lower overall stance, with a lower diffuser in the rear finishing off the ground effects package as well as a bolder rear spoiler mounted at the top of the hatch. Rounding out the compact Mazda 2 ’s sports inspired concept are a set of bright green 17 inch wheels wrapped in sticky Yokahama Advan tires.

Honda ’s latest concept car offering made its cracking debut at the 2009 LA Auto Show and from the looks of things; it’s everything we thought it would be, for better or for worse. Called the Honda Personal-Neo Urban Transport – P-NUT for short – the new concept is Honda’s entry to the micro coupe market. Although concept cars generally are a hit-or-miss upon first glance, the P-NUT’s aesthetic appearance falls on the latter. We’re quite not sure how to explain it, except that it looks like some sort of gigantic flat iron, which, if you’re keeping track, isn’t a good thing.

Honda P-NUT

We’ve seen some pretty crazy concept vehicles over the years and the P-NUT surely ranks among one of the weirdest we’ve seen in a while. For starters, the car has no side mirrors, which isn’t all too surprising given that this is a concept. In place of the missing mirrors – at least we think so – is a back-up camera. We’re also still waiting for an explanation as to where the headlights are – of course, it’s in the front but we find it hard to believe that those two slits are the actual headlights.

Although this is the customized 2011 Ford Fiesta at the LA Auto Show, it certainly won’t be the last of the blue oval’s compacts to be tuned. This red and white Fiesta was a collaboration between 3dCarbon and FSWerks and takes full advantage of Fiesta’s European styling and rock solid foundation and power train to springboard the B segment hatchback to the next level of street authority.

Now this racing stripe wearing Fiesta is no show pony, thanks to the combination of the FSWerks Stage 2 intercooled turbo kit and a less restrictive free flowing 2.25 inch exhaust gives the little 1.6 Liter Fiesta enough grunt to play with the big boys and adequately matches the 3dCarbon body kit’s aggressive appearance. The aero package is made up of a big mouth front bumper and matching ground effects that issue a bold challenge to contenders while at the track the FSWerks components ensure that the tuned Fiesta can not only talk the talk, but walk the walk as well.

The Volkswagen New Beetle entered production in 1998, and like it predecessors it was a very successful model. But Volkswagen is preparing to end the current generation of the iconic models; and to mark this even today at the Los Angeles Auto Show they have revealed the New Beetle Final Edition, for both coupe and convertible models. The company will build 1,500 units each, and prices will start at $20,240 for the coupe and $27,170 for the convertible model.

H&R Special Springs revealed at the Los Angeles Auto Show their own version of the 2011 Ford Fiesta. Fiesta’s natural good looks get the Euro treatment, with Sticky Jewell custom graphics, custom Euro hood vents, stealthy blacked-out headlamps and a Ford Custom Accessories upper rear hatch spoiler.

The H&R Street Performance monotube coil-over kit features height-adjustable shocks to set wheel arches the perfect distance from the big, 18-inch OZ SuperTurismo GT wheels. When it comes to personalizing Fiesta, this is one suspension-and-wheels approach that most do-it-yourself buyers can adopt to set themselves firmly above the rest of the sport compact crowd.

The final version of the Chevrolet Volt electric car was presented today at the Los Angeles Auto Show. At the even GM announced that the electric sedan will be available late next year in California with other lead markets to be named later. Production will begin in 2010 and will cost $41,000 before federal and state tax incentives. While the sticker price is rather high, the lease deal seems to be the best choice. Buyers can lease their very own electric Volt for $350 per month for 36 months. That is the exact same payment that Nissan is asking for with the Leaf EV.

Chevrolet Volt

The Chevrolet Volt is designed to drive up to 40 miles on electricity without using gasoline or producing tailpipe emissions. When the Volt’s lithium-ion battery runs low, an engine/generator seamlessly operates to extend the total driving range to more than 300 miles before refueling or stopping to recharge the battery. One thing to remember while you are at the pump; this little baby has to be filled with premium gasoline.

Also, the Volt’s exterior color has an official name: Viridian Joule, a name suggested by David Thomas, 40, of Sanford, Fla.
