  Los Angeles Auto Show

We all know that Jaguar will be unveiling the new XFR-S sports sedan next week at the 2012 Los Angeles Auto Show next to the new F-Type roadster . But, the company now announced that a special "Black Pack" F-Type will also be on display on its stand.

As its name suggests, the new Black pack will add lots of black elements. A distinctive gloss black finish will be added to the alloy wheels, the grille and window surrounds and it will be combined with a limited list of body color options. And, for an even more aggressive look the package will add smoked lights and blacked-out mirrors. The same black treatment will continue on the interior.

The new Black Pack will go on sale in the same time with the F-Type - mid-spring 2013 - and will add an extra $1,600 to the car’s total price. It will be offered for both V6 and V8 engine configurations.

Jaguar XFR-S

Jaguar has just announced its lineup for the upcoming 2012 Los Angeles Auto Show, and we have to admit, we like what we see. First, the new F-Type roadster will be making its U.S. debut, which is enough to get us amped up. Now we are learning that an important piece to Jag’s future lineup, the ultra-high-performanceJaguar XFR-S , will be making its world debut in L.A. too.

The XFR-S is the second R-S model in Jaguar’s lineup, following the XKR-S that Jag unveiled at the 2011 Geneva Motor Show. No official details have been offered just yet, but it is believed the XFR-S will be powered by the same engine that fuels the XKR-S: a 5.0-liter supercharged V-8 engine that delivers a total of 550 horsepower.

Jaguar is quoted saying: "Making its global debut at the show will be the XFR-S model, the fastest and most powerful saloon Jaguar has ever produced. This is the second model in the ultra-high performance R-S range and builds on the already acclaimed XFR."

That sounds like a pretty awesome Jag to us, so stay tuned for more info. The L.A. Auto Show is just around the corner!

Last year at the Los Angeles Auto Show Fiat unveiled the American version of the Fiat 500 Abarth and this year the company made a comeback with the cabrio version. On the European market the model already enjoys a great success, and Fiat is now hopping it will do the same good impression on the U.S. market.

The model features the same design language as the coupe version, except of course its power-operated cloth top that can be operated at speeds up to 60 mph just be pressing a button.

"The new Fiat 500c Abarth delivers the wicked attitude and track-proven capabilities of the hatchback model, now with the rush of open-air Italian performance," said Tim Kuniskis, Head of FIAT Brand for North America — Chrysler Group LLC. "And with the push of a button our new turbocharged cabrio can unleash that added sense of freedom, while offering one of the most respected soundtracks of all-time, the rasp from its signature Abarth-tuned dual exhausts."

The new Fiat 500C Abarth will go on sale in the first-quarter of 2013.

UPDATE 12/06/12: Hold on to you pants, gentlemen. Fiat recently released a new commercial promoting the Abarth 500 Cabriolet. Suffice to say, it features supermodel Catrinel Menghia, a naughty little scorpion, and the 500C. Oh, and did we mention that Menghia went "topless" in the ad? Yep, click on the photo above to check it out!

Back in September, Los Angeles Auto Show organizers announced the theme for this year’s Design Challenge contest: contenders needed to design a law enforcement car for the year 2025. Today, they have finally announced the six competitors coming from BMW , General Motors , Honda (two entries), Mercedes-Benz and Subaru .

BMW’s entry will be the E-Patrol (Human-Drone Pursuit Vehicle), which is a concept built on a modular structure with three different drones. In the case of a pursuit in heavy traffic, the patrol officer can deploy either the flying drone or one of the single-wheel drones to chase the suspect and report back to the officer.

General Motors entered the contest with a Volt Squad — a three-vehicle fleet designed around the concept of observe, pursue and engage. Honda has two entries for 2012: the CHP Drone Squad, a vehicle-based-system for 2025, which is designed to work efficiently and seamlessly in the harsh environment of California highways. Honda’s second entry is the "CHiPs" 2025 Traffic Crawler, a vehicle that has the ability to adjust to changes in the traffic environment.

Mercedes is entering the contest with Ener-G-Force, a vehicle based on the G-Class and designed as an environmentally friendly SUV. And finally Subaru’s entry is the SHARC (Subaru Subaru Highway Automated Response Concept) highway patrol vehicles. They are capable of providing an innovative, affordable and environmentally conscious solution for 24-hour highway monitoring, protection and rapid emergency response.

The winner of the contest will be announced on November 25.

Just like with the recently announced Honda Accord , the ninth generation Civic also received its first update and changes include a completely revised front and rear exterior styling, improved interior, while the 1.8-liter 16-valve four-cylinder engine remains unchanged. The model made its world debut today at the 2012 Los Angeles Auto Show and will be put on sale on November 29 at a stating price of $18,165.

On the exterior the 2013 Civic has received a more youthful and premium styling with an an all-new hood, updated grille, a new rear bumper design and new rear trunk lid. The interior has also being revised with soft-top materials and new technologies, while the list of safety features is being more impressive than ever and will include as a first in the compact segment standard Forward Collision Warning (FCW) and Lane Departure Warning (LDW) systems.

While under the hood the engine remains unchanged, Honda has added a new high fuel efficiency "HF" version that delivers an impressive fuel economy of 41 mpg on the highway.

Back in September we announced that the all-new 2014 Subaru Forester was just about finished and that a few leaky valves had allowed some information to be released. We knew that the Forster was going to hit showrooms riding on a revised version of the Impreza’s platform and that this would result in a few extra inches here and there. We also outlined the rumored engines that the new Forester would feature.

Well, no more speculation and links, as Subaru has officially lifted the veil off of some of the Forester’s key details just before its official unveiling at the Los Angeles Auto Show . Surprisingly – or maybe not to those that know how leaks work – the information we received was actually pretty accurate, save for a few horsepower from the engine.

So, what exactly is Subaru offering us with its all-new part-SUV, part-station-wagon that it has offered up since 1998?

Updated 11/29/2012: The new generation Subaru Forester made its official debut at the 2012 Los Angeles Auto Show, and this was the perfect opportunity for us to add a new set of high res images. The 2014 Forester will go on sale on the U.S. market next spring in two trims: 2.5i available in base, Premium, Limited and Touring versions and 2.0XT offered in the Premium and Touring versions.

Updated 01/18/2013: Subaru announced today prices for the 2014 Forester that will go on sale in base, Premium, Limited and top-line Touring versions. Pricing for the Forester begins at $21,995 for the base model 2.5i and from $27,995 for the Premium versions.

For people that get the four seasons, you’re all probably aware that winter is coming, and that means you’re going to need a ride that can take the wrath of the cold in stride.

German automaker BMW has partnered with ski manufacturer K2 to provide us winter wanderers with the ride for the season. Based on the former’s X1 SUV, the ride has been dubbed the X1Powder Ride Special Edition and it comes with a plethora of exclusive features that, quite frankly, no other X1 will probably have.

For starters, the special edition X1 will carry a number of color options, including non-metallic paint shades like Black and Alpine White, in addition to more glistening shades like Valencia Orange, Mineral White, Mineral Grey, Glacier Silver, and Black Sapphire. In addition to that, the X1 Powder Ride Edition will also come with plenty of new equipment that has been specifically added to the SUV’s overall purpose.

There are roof rails, door sill strips, leather trim for the seats and steering wheel, a snowboard bag, all-weather floor mats, a roof box, ambient lighting, and a new set of 18" alloy wheels, a lot of which are part of the the automaker’s xLine package. Just because it’s co-produced by K2, the X1 Powder Ride Edition will also come with an exclusively designed pair of K2 LTD Powder Ride skis.

As far as engine options are concerned, the X1 Powder Ride Special Edition will be available for the 300-horsepower xDrive35i straight-six model or the 240-horsepower xDrive28i four-cylinder model.

The BMW X1 Powder Ride Special Edition will make its debut at the 2012 Los Angeles Auto Show before hitting dealerships next year.

Meanwhile, the Concept K2 Power Ride, another LA-bound BMW X1, will come with a taller ride height, tinted windows, a new set of 19" alloy wheels, a custom milled aluminum ski rack, and an integrated Harman Kardon sound system.

From the 1,000-lb car to the future of Hollywood vehicles , the Los Angeles Auto Show Design Challenge has seen its fair share of out-of-this-world concepts. This year, the highly anticipated competition will turn to the world of law enforcement, or more specifically, law enforcement cars in the year 2025.

Considering that 2025 is only 13 years away, you would think that nobody’s going to go Jetsons with their presentation, but the LAASDC doesn’t roll like that. Expect some snazzy concepts from some of the world’s best auto design studios coming from the likes of Mercedes-Benz, Bentley, BMW, General Motors, Honda, Hyundai, and Subaru, among others.

"One of the most difficult yet important tasks in design is looking into the future to envision and create the trends and tools that haven’t been imagined," said Chuck Pelly, director of Design Los Angeles and partner in The Design Academy, Inc.

"Adding the element of law enforcement to this year’s competition creates another layer of importance that makes a challenge equal to the level of our participants."

With the focus on highway patrol cars, the concepts must adhere to a number of criteria, including what the press release says as "advanced powertrains, alternative fuels, telemetrics, and new sizes to effectively navigate dynamic urban environments."

Evaluation of the cars, which will have their press days on November 28th and 29th, will be based on speed and agility, creativity, technology, and eco-friendliness.

Jaguar XFR-S

So we all now know that Jaguar is working on the XFR-S, the sedan sibling to the XKR-S . We have actually assumed it for a while, but Jag finally admitted to it in February of this year. We have also heard whispers from several sources that say it will make its debut at the Los Angles Motor Show in November.

Since Jaguar is being stingy with images of its work in progress and all we can dig up are some spy shots with swirly livery covering up the goodies, we turned to our crack rendering team for help. What you see above is what they came up with.

Fortunately, the spy shots gave us a good look at the basic body structure, but left to the imagination the lower-third of the XFR-S. As we can tell from the spy shots and as you can see from our rendering, we expect the XFR-S to look very similar to the current XFR model with a little less chrome and a different rim package.

Also changed up is the front bumper cover, as the lower grille is slightly wider and its angle is reversed from the 2012 XFR. Also on the front bumper cover, the air intake opening on each side is significantly larger and has rounder corners than you see on the 2012 XFR. The extra size of the air intakes may simply be aesthetic, but they could also point to additional brake cooling.

As you can see from our rendering, we anticipate the differences from the 2012 XFR and the upcoming XFR-S to be slight, on the outside. What you don’t see is the extra 40 horsepower and 49 pound-feet of torque lingering inside its re-tuned 5.0-liter supercharged V-8. Then again, maybe what we saw was just a test mule and not the real deal. We’ll just have to wait until November to find out.
