2014 Lotus Esprit

The legend is back! Lotus has unveiled today the new Esprit sports car. Described as the "ultimate Lotus," the new Esprit will go into production at the end of 2012, with first deliveries beginning in late 2013, early 2014. Lotus announced an estimated price of £110,000 ($175,000 at the current rates).

At the unveiling of the Evora S model in San Jose in June 2011, Lotus Cars USA PR boss, Kevin Smith, confirmed that the Esprit supercar would be getting Lotus’ in-house V8 engine and both a manual and a dual-clutch transmission. This V8 engine was originally said to deliver between 550 - 570 HP, but actually achieved 570 HP at around 9000rpm and 398 lb-ft of torque at a bit higher than 3000rpm. Lotus Chief Technical Officer, Wolf Zimmermann, says this engine can reach up to 630 HP at 9,400 rpm and 424 lb-ft of torque between 5,500 and 6,000rpm. The V8 weighs in at about 375 lbs, which is about 176 lbs lighter than the original 5.0L V8 Lotus was going to borrow from Lexus. It will be used for both the Esprit and, as confirmed by Smith, an even more exotic Elite .

"One has to be very careful when taking on the challenge of reinventing such an iconic classic as the Esprit – everyone has an opinion. There’s a fine balance between acknowledging the greatness of the past whilst at the same time rapidly leaping forward to the future and ensuring that this car not only does the name Esprit justice but also the Lotus brand. I think we’ve managed to find the balance and in doing so created a new icon, a car people will find hard to resist."

UPDATE 11/21/2011: Lotus officials has confirmed that the next generation Esprit will be powered by a 4.8 liter V8 engine. This new engine will deliver a total of 570 HP in standard version, but the company will be also offering a higher-tuned variant with an output of 620 HP. (Autoblog)

UPDATE 12/12/2011:New details about the future supercar revealed that the Esprit will, in fact, be offered in two versions. A base model will combine a 100 HP electric motor to a normally aspirated V8 engine and a more powerful version will drop the hybrid system and focus on weight-saving measures. (AutoCar)

UPDATE 10/04/2012: According to Lotus Forums, the Esprit has officially been axed. leaving the Elise, Exige, and Evora as the only standing models on the company’s new era lineup.

The most eagerly anticipated Lotus makes its return. Without doubt, this is the car that the true Lotus aficionados have been waiting for: The ultimate Lotus.

The new Esprit represents the very essence of exclusive supercar driving. It picks up and exceeds the legacy of it’s forefathers. Think of it as a statement of superiority. Think of it as Lotus CEO Dany Bahar’s personal statement of intent, his vision for the future of Lotus.

Lotus Esprit

Dany Bahar, Chief Executive Officer of Group Lotus, said: “The Esprit is the ultimate supercar. In the past when people thought of the Esprit, they thought of the movies, Bond, Pretty Woman,
Basic Instinct but this time around, the car is the star of the show.”

“One has to be very careful when taking on the challenge of reinventing such an iconic classic as the Esprit – everyone has an opinion. There’s a fine balance between acknowledging the greatness of the past whilst at the same time rapidly leaping forward to the future and ensuring that this car not only does the name Esprit justice but also the Lotus brand. I think we’ve managed to find the balance and in doing so created a new icon, a car people will find hard to resist.”

Lotus Esprit

“Not only does the Esprit look incredible but it has the performance to match. We’ve stuck to the Lotus core values of performance through lightweight and teamed them with future technology and exceptional engineering to ensure that the Esprit will be the leader of the pack. The design is aggressive, you have to see it to appreciate how low and wide the proportions are but it still retains a level of dignity, of class and most of all exclusivity. I’m very proud of this car.”

Powered by a 5.0 litre V8 pressure charged engine delivering up to 620 PS, the Esprit retains exceptional performance through it’s unique lightweight design making it the ultimate expression of Lotus supercar ownership. It is the supercar that will redefine ride and handling, performance, comfort and exclusivity.

The styling of the Esprit echoes the performance with strong lines throughout the sleek low body. The symmetry through the mass and proportion of the Esprit give it an intense look, it’s the perfect example of the new Lotus DNA in action.

The Esprit is more than an evolution, it’s a redefinition.

I don’t know what’s with this Esprit co’z, I found it very attractive, sure. It really had an amazing design, but it had some especial features that I can’t figure out.

I simply love this new Esprit of Lotus, so aggressive on its detailing. Even though its too pricey, I bet they will sell out this one. And with its powerful engine, car dealers can’t really resist it.

Yeah, they are legend of providing this superb sports car in the market. And up until now they don’t fail me to be captivated with their car collections.

I want to test drive this car to know my self what is that car or if this car is great to me. The color of car is simple and it’s look likes Lamborghini.

Oh yeah! Well, it’s a good thing that they have done on what they promise! The figure performance of the car is really impressive! I bet it would be a reliable car.

This car reminds me of the GTA Spano. The figure performance of the car is quite impressive plus the styling is so elegant. I hope to test drive this car soon.

How about the Evora? I wonder if Lotus have any plan for this car? BTW, I agree that the speed performance of the Lotus is kind of powerful and it seems faster in terms of 0-60 mph.

Well, it’s a great thing this is not the final production for the Esprit. I was thinking if they are going to killed this production then there will be no higher speed performing in the production of Lotus.

I first heard the Superleggera in the line up of Lamborghini vehicle. The sportiness of the car is quite drooling plus its speed performance. I can’t wait to see the production of these vehicle!!

I like the sportiness of the Lotus Espirit. The specification of the car is really impressive. I hope that this car will be put into production. By the way, I wonder who are its competitors.

I wonder if Lotus is going to debut this vehicle one-by-one along with the Lamborghini future line up or what? BTW, I would love to see a removed top speed please!

I first heard the Superleggera in the line up of Lamborghini vehicle. The sportiness of the car is quite drooling plus its speed performance. I can’t wait to see the production of these vehicle!!

The sportiness of the car makes it to look like a Porsche with the collaboration of Lamborghini car. BTW, its seems that there’s no stunning in the figure performance of the Esprit.

Its kind of smart move for the Lotus to update instead their previous model rather than building a newer model. The specs of the car is quite impressive as well as its power output. I don’ t know on what to expect for the future of the car.

What kind of emotion are they talking about? All I can see is the angst that expressing of this car, but I love the design, one of a kind.

Congratulations to Lotus. This car has been one of their best unit to be released in the near future. I hope everybody will going to check its specifications and make a good reviews on it.

Well, I’m glad to see that its possible for the Lotus to combine the luxury and high speed performance. I hope that they will do the same with the modified version of this car.

Wow! This car seems to have a high speed performance just like the Evora though it has a better styling on its interior. The torque of this car is just enough to make it run like a rocket-speed!

I hostly think that this car will take Lotus to a new level, being up there with Ferrari and Porsche again just like 20 years. I also can’t wait to see what else Lotus has up their sleeve.

This is one of the greatest pride of Lotus. So, let’s check on the figures after the production if this one will become a hit. Besides, Espirit is a great name.
