luxury cars

Luxury cars are expensive and come in all shapes: sedan, coupe or convertible. They offer all the comfort, luxury and performance but you will have to pay premium price. German cars like BMW or Mercedes are the first brand that come to our mind but nowadays nearly all car makers offer nice and comfortable models that enter in the luxury car category.

Porsche Macan

Things are going really well for Porsche these days. At the opening ceremony for the new Porsche Macan plant in Leipzig today, Porsche CEO Matthias Mueller said he expects the automaker to break the 200,000-unit sales mark, partly in thanks to exploding interest in its small crossover, the Macan.

New for 2015, the Macan is based on the Audi Q5 and is Porsche’s second go in the SUV class. Its wildly popular Cayenne has been a great seller for the company since its introduction back in 2003. "We’re transferring the genes of the Porsche brand into a new market segment," Mueller said. "Porsche will remain a manufacturer of very exclusive premium cars."

What we take away from that quote is that Porsche will pander to the vogue SUV and crossovers of today, but will never abandon the classic sports car on which their brand, reputation, and faithful following is based upon.

To that end, Mueller continued saying in regards to future Macan models, "GTS versions have a tradition at Porsche. We haven’t made a final decision yet regarding the Macan, but I’m sure it makes a lot of sense." Sorta sounds like the Macan GTS’ first public teaser to us.

Until we hear more official words, we’re left to speculate. One thing is sure, however, and that’s Porsche’s certainty its all-new Macan will be a hit. Mueller continued in his speech saying Porsche is ready to push production beyond the 50,000 units currently being planned if demand for the sporty crossover continues in its skyward direction.

BMW has been busy testing upcoming models in the harsh winter currently provided by Mother Nature, and the new 2015 BMW X6 M looks to be among the group.

Despite slow sales, the X6 is getting a second generation complete with the M version . The X5 , on which the X6 is based, got a healthy refresh for 2014 with new driveline options and updated powertrains. 2014 will be the first time the CUV is available in a rear-wheel-drive-only setup with AWD still remaining an option. If this carries over to the X6, it could significantly reduce the CUV’s base MSRP, and open up the vehicle to a new group of buyers. Selecting the RWD setup in the X5 saves customers $2,300 over the AWD version.

All-wheel-drive will probably remain a fixture in the X6 M, however, due to the high output of the turbocharged V-8 and its track-ready attitude. That power is likely to come from the M5 sedan’s 4.4-liter TwinPower V-8 that lays down 560 horsepower between 6,000 and 7,000 rpm and 502 pound-feet of torque between a low 1,500 and impressive 5,750 rpm.

The X6 still retains its coupe-like crossover appearance with it’s sloping roofline in its second generation. The M version seen here gets larger grille openings and signature quad exhaust outlets. Not present on this tester is a vented or power-bulged hood that will probably be on the production X6 M.

Pricing for the current-generation X6 M starts at $93,900 and grows quickly to over $100k with options. It’s likely pricing won’t move too far away from the current numbers, but if they do, they’ll be headed north.

Updated 08/28/12: The BMW X6 M is losing its camouflage slowly buy surely. This only means one thing: expect the luxury coupe SUV to be revealed sooner than later.

Aston Martin Lagonda

It is no longer a mystery that Mercedes -AMG is in cahoots with Aston Martin , but the link will be subtle and we will not see Astons cruising the roads with AMG badges any time soon — or ever for that matter. Things become rather interesting when we start talking about the rumored production of the Aston Martin Lagonda SUV. The only real reason that Aston has put off the Lagonda, which the company showed off in 2009 at the Geneva Auto Show, is because the British sports car builder didn’t have a suitable platform for it.

With Mercedes now working with Aston Martin, the former has access to several SUV platforms to sit the Lagonda atop. In fact, Dieter Zetsche, the head of Mercedes-Benz, made it clear to Autocar that he is open to sharing the GL-Class platform with Aston Martin.

That really strikes us as odd, as the deal was initially only supposed to include electronics and a few bespoke V-8 engines. Now the deal is suddenly showing the potential to include an entire platform; so, how long until Mercedes backs off its AMG-badge stance and starts sharing that with Aston?

Hey, we can dream, right?

Here in the U.S., we are limited to the E350 and E550 in terms of E-Class Coupes from Benz, but Japan has one extra model that we do not get here in the states, the E250 Coupe. This entry-level E-Class Coupe features a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-spot that cranks out 208 horsepower and 258 pound-feet of torque.

For Japanese customers that want a little extra something from their base E250, you can now opt for a Special Edition model that will be limited to just 100 units. On the outside, there are two color options, as 80 of said models are painted Polar White and the remaining 20 units are coated in Fire Opal. On top of the special paint, this E250 Special Edition also gets 18-inch, twin-spoke AMG wheels and the AMG Sport Package. For an extra ¥200,000 — about $2,000 at the current exchange rates — buyers can also add in a body kit that includes skirts all the way around, and front and rear spoilers.

Inside the E250 Special Edition it features a Nappa leather-wrapped steering wheel, and a Bengal Red interior on the Polar White model and Natural Beige on the Fire Opal model.

This package checks in at ¥7.12 million — roughly $71,000 — which is a ¥430,000 ($4,200) increase over the base E250. Not too bad.

I already showed you the Charger SRT Satin Vapor Edition , and now I present the 300 SRT with the same package. Like its Charger sibling, the 300 SRT Satin Vapor model has a set of Black Satin Vapor Chrome-finished 20-by-9-inch, split-five-spoke wheels, and a series of satin-black elements that include the mirror caps, rear spoiler and roof. It also shares the red Brembo calipers and grey "6.4L HEMI" badge.

Buyers get three color choices for this special model — Bright White, Billet Silver and Granite Crystal — and they can also opt for a black body stripe for a little extra style.

Inside the cabin, the 300 SRT Satin Vapor Edition gets black Nappa leather-trimmed seats wiyh ultra-suede inserts, and matte-carbon and piano-black inserts in the instrument panel, door bezels and center console. Unfortunately, Chrysler didn’t give us any looks at the interior, but I am sure I’ll get a peek sometime soon, and I’ll share the images with you.

Under its hood, this special edition carries the same 6.4-liter HEMI V-8 that cranks out 470 horsepower and 470 pound-feet of torque.

The Satin Vapor model hits showrooms in the second quarter of this year at a $2,300 premium on the 300 SRT’s base price of $45,900. That comes to a grand total of $48,200.

BMW announced today that its venerable X3 SUV is getting a much-needed upgrade. BMW is blowing open the new 2015 BMW X3 SUV by offering it with multiple U.S.-market firsts. Most notably, you can now get the X3 with diesel power, and there is now a model without all-wheel drive.

The availability of the rear-wheel-drive model helps bring the price of the X3 down into a new market, and the diesel engine option provides a level of fuel economy that far exceeds any of the previous X3 models.

As expected with any major update, the designs of the interior and exterior have been updated and overall equipment levels have increased.

Is the new 2015 BMW X3 the best luxury SUV money can buy, or does BMW need to make more substantial changes to make the model worth looking at?

Audi is on the brink of releasing something new and they’ve been boasting about it though the short teaser commercial you see here. As we reported before, Audi is skipping the 2014 Chicago Auto show in favor of a February 12th debut in an undisclosed location.

As the plot thickens, the secrecy of the vehicle in question starts to wane. In this second teaser, we get a short glimpse of what Audi’s got planned. Around the 16-second mark, the side mirror, window, door handle, and belt line are visible for a brief instant. Careful examination of that video frame suggests it’s the Audi Q2 Crossover , but we cannot be 100 percent certain.

The Q2 looks to be a two door coupe -like crossover that would potentially compete against the Range Rover Evoque Coupe . Since the Q2 would be a smaller crossover, it’s likely powered by a four-cylinder already found in Audi’s stable — the 2.0-liter TFSI four-pot normally found in the A3 sedan seems to fit well. In that application, it produces a respectable 220 horsepower and 258 pound-feet of torque, which is plenty for a small crossover.

The other discernible feature in the video is the quattro emblem at roughly the 14-second mark, meaning this little guy will posses an impressive all-wheel-drive system. The last, and perhaps most telling feature we could glean from this video is the six-speed manual gear shifter prominently displayed at the 13-second mark.

Leave a comment below with your ideas of what Audi’s got up their sleeve. And be sure to check back on February 12th for all the information when it becomes available.

Mercedes brought out the C-Class in 1993 as a replacement for the 190E, and since then, it has sprouted three generations and has become the most important model in the company’s lineup. To keep the momentum going, Mercedes is working on the fourth-generation C-Class (internally called the BR205), and, after testing it for months, the company released today the first official details on the new model.

The car’s design lines are inspired by the F800 Concept Car displayed in Geneva two years ago, with a more marked front grille. This will obviously change the look of the C-Class, but won’t change it so severely as to present a completely new design.

Mercedes is set on keeping the essence of the model, but it added a certain degree of sportiness and dynamic so that it can compete with the Audi A4 and the BMW 3-Series .

The Mercedes C-Class Sedan will arrive in 2014 and six months later, it will be followed by a station wagon version. Approximately one year after that, the company will unveil the coupe and convertible versions as well.

For the U.S. market, the C-Class will be built in the Alabama plant alongside the GL-Class and ML-Class .

Updated 12/16/2013: This review was updated with the official details, images, video and specs.

Updated 02/05/2014: Mercedes unveiled a new video in which it explains the progressive and emotional design featured in the new generation C-Class. Enjoy!

Updated 07/29/2014: Mercedes released prices for the 2015 C-Class which will be put on sale in September. Prices will range from $38,400 for the base C300 up to $48,590 for the C400 4MATIC version.

Maserati Ghibli

Ever since Jaguar reinvented itself and turned into a major player in the automotive market, it hasn’t been afraid to show its claws and display its mean streak.

It did so a few months ago with Mercedes and its Magic Body Control system, and now, fresh off of a letdown of a Super Bowl commercial, Jaguar its taking a shot at a competitor looking to make some headway in the U.S. market.

As if picking up a fight with Mercedes isn’t enough, Jaguar’s taking some shots at Maserati and its new luxury sedan, the Ghibli . In a tweet that was posted after the Super Bowl, Jaguar intentionally wondered out loud to all its Twitter followers exactly what the word "ghibli" means.

Jaguar’s actual tweet: "Did you know that #ghibli means hot air? Seems appropriate."

Shots fired, indeed.

Give credit to Jaguar for injecting a little bit of humor into its shot at the Ghibli, since a quick Google search did reveal that ghibli is "a hot, dust-carrying desert wind in North Africa, somewhat similar to the foehn". Then again, we doubt that Maserati took it with the same good humor that we did.

We eagerly await for Maserati’s response.

Click past the jump to read about the Maserati Ghibli and you’ll realize that contrary to Jaguar’s shots, the Ghibli is actually all that...and maybe even more.

As the cheapest coupe Audi sells, the A5 is designed to bring a seductive two-door into an affordable price bracket. Now Audi looks to add even more value to that bargain basement price with its new “ultra” line of TDI equipped cars.

The Volkswagen family of turbocharged diesel engines are already some of the best when it comes to balancing fuel economy and performance, so it makes sense to see that expertise leveraged. The new ultra models are equipped with a new 2.0-liter TDI engine that is available in three levels of power output: 136 horsepower, 163 horsepower and 190 horsepower. If those numbers seem low, don’t worry. These engines pack tons of torque, so at lower speeds they still have plenty of thrust.

The A5 Ultra comes powered exclusively by the 163-horsepower version of this new engine. This engine configuration lays out an absurd 295 pound-feet of twist, and it is sold with a special six-speed manual transmission with taller final gears for improved economy. Audi is claiming a fuel economy rating 56 mpg combined on the EU scale, and top speed sits at 140 mph.

As you can probably guess from the manual-only designation, this car is not currently slated for a U.S. release. We reached out to Audi on the possibility of bringing the “ultra” models to U.S. shores, and John Shilling, Manager of Product Communications at Audi, said there are "No plans in the U.S. for that version at this time."
