luxury cars

Luxury cars are expensive and come in all shapes: sedan, coupe or convertible. They offer all the comfort, luxury and performance but you will have to pay premium price. German cars like BMW or Mercedes are the first brand that come to our mind but nowadays nearly all car makers offer nice and comfortable models that enter in the luxury car category.

Kahn Design prepares to end the year in style, with a new design based on an Audi . It looks like the company decided to drop its usual preference to Land Rover models, and decided to do something special for its final release for 2013.

The kit prepared by Kahn Design is based on the Q5 with the 2.0-liter TDI engine that delivers a total of 170 horsepower and 258 pound-feet of torque. As usual, the design firm left all the bits under the hood in their stock form, but the 170 horses from the factory four-pot engine enough for such a tiny SUV .

Instead, Kahn focused on upgrading the exterior and the interior look of this petite SUV, plus it installed a new set of wheels combined with a new suspension system for enhanced handling. There is also a new quad exhaust system made in stainless-steel, which will make the diesel engine sound a little bit better.

Mercedes-Benz S-Class

My, how things have changed for Mercedes-Benz .

It wasn’t that long ago when Mercedes was fretting about the S-Class ’ lagging sales in the face of strong competition from the BMW 7 Series and the Audi A8 . So Merc sought an answer, and like a self-fulfilling premonition, it found a solution in the next-generation S-Class.

With a new flagship model in its fleet, customers can’t seem to have enough of the new S-Class, so much so that the German automaker announced that its ramping up production of its new luxury ride.

The law of supply and demand at its finest, folks.

With demand that its predecessor never received in its final days, the new S-Class has compelled Mercedes to add an extra 74 minutes a day on its employees’ schedule, beginning in 2014 at the Sindelfingen assembly plant in Germany where the luxury sedan is built. And this extended time comes after Mercedes already increased work days by 30 minutes this year on top of adding four shifts on Saturdays.

Such is the consequence of a strong 2013 in which the company reported an 11-percent increase in sales from January to November compared to the same time a year ago. In fact, the company has sold 1.32 million units in the first 11 months of the year, almost the same number it managed to sell for the entirety of 2012.

One reason for that is the surprising popularity of the S-Class, a car that has reinvigorated Mercedes’ attempts to rule the luxury car market.

So far so good, Mercedes. Now all you have to do is retain that momentum as 2014 rolls around.

TOPCAR is no stranger to modding high-end cars, with some of its favorites hailing from Porsche. Well, it didn’t take the tuner too long — it’s only been about a month since its official unveiling — to get to work on the Macan , as it has released a sweet aesthetic kit for the upcoming SUV. Sure, these images are all simply renders, but they are enough to keep our attention turned to our friends from Russia to see just how the final product turns out.

TOPCAR left the under-hood bits alone, but we’re pretty sure these performance mods will come at a later date. As for the exterior, TOPCAR left no stone unturned, as it completely transformed the look of the Macan .

The aerodynamic updates includes new bumpers, spoilers, side skirts and diffusers. All the new elements are made from a combination of carbon fiber and Kevlar — typical TOPCAR quality, of course — and, according to the tuner, these mods will significantly improve the driving dynamics of the Cayenne ’s little bro, likely from the added downforce and reduced weight.

TOPCAR also announced that a series of updates for the interior, plus some updates for the engine lineup are also under development and should be ready for the spring of 2014.

Whenever the end of the year is upon us, we all spend enough time to take a break from all the holiday shopping to reflect on the year that was.

The same holds true in the automotive industry, except that instead of merely reminiscing, there are those that are in positions to hand out what they deem are the best cars of the year. Last week, 48 journalists from North America voted on the North American Car and Truck of the Year, whittling down the list to three finalists in each category with the winners being announced at the 2014 North American International Auto Show this coming January.

Well, Europe has its equivalent in the aptly named "Car of the Year jury." It consists of 58 members from 22 countries in Europe with representation depending on a specific country’s market size and its "importance in car manufacturing."

A subjective criteria, but okay, we’ll roll with it.

What’s important is that the list of contenders for the prestigious award has been narrowed down to seven finalists, all of which have as much chance as the other to succeed the seventh-generation Volkswagen Golf . The winner will be announced at the Geneva Motor Show in March, giving the "Car of the Year" jury enough time to exhaust every analytical measure possible before making a decision on which car to vote for.

Good luck to all the finalists!

BMW 7-Series

For all the strides BMW has made in expanding its lineup, one model that’s still noticeably absent from its fleet is a performance-oriented 7 Series .

Talk of a potential M7 has floated around for years, but nothing has really come out of it, leading a lot of people to think that Bimmer is more than content letting Audi and Mercedes enjoy the high-performance luxury segment with the S8 and S63 AMG , respectively.

But not everybody inside BMW seems to agree to this point, including M development chief, Albert Biermann. Speaking to Autocar, Biermann indicated that if he had a say on the issue, he would emphatically call for the M division to develop the M7 so that it could compete with its aforementioned rivals, not to mention the suddenly resurgent Jaguar and its prized luxury cat, the XJR .

Biermann did acknowledge that, while he feels strongly about having an M7, the company still has no current plans to make one, nor does it have any intention to do so in the foreseeable future.

Those who believe that an M7 isn’t feasible can likewise point to the Alpina-tuned B7 as the car that can generally match wits and power with the S8s and S63 AMGs of the world. To that, Biermann contends that a B7 and an actual M7 could be packaged as two totally different models with the latter making full use of Bimmer’s performance division.

But as they say, one voice won’t exactly lead to the change of battle plans and Biermann appears to be resigned to the fact that an M7 isn’t in the cards for the time being. It’s a consequence that could be attributed to BMW’s approach to limit its M models, opting instead to package its new babies as M Performance models the same way its doing with the X3 and the X4 .

It’s a shame considering that an M7 would’ve been awesome. Really, really awesome.

Mercedes CLA-Class

What is everyone wishing for Christmas? By the looks of the sales reports, the answer is a Mercedes CLA , as they are becoming rather difficult to get a hold of at dealerships.

Of course this does not come as a big surprise to us, because we were sure the CLA would be a huge hit right from the moment we first laid eyes upon it. It features an elegant look — the best of all the Mercedes sedans in our opinion — offers a highly equipped interior, and a carries a very competitive base price of $29,900.

In a letter addressed to its dealers, Mercedes officials announced that from February to June 2014, they should expect “tight inventories and low days supply” because the car’s "overwhelming success." The company’s plant is at full capacity, but even so, Mercedes has problems satisfying all the requests.

Mercedes itself called the new CLA the best launch they had in the past 20 months, as it enjoyed "phenomenal success right out of the gate." In fact the new CLA is one of the models that helped Mercedes to pass BMW for the first time in a very long time — in the first 10 months of 2013, Mercedes sold 245,145 cars in the U.S., which was 5,000 more than BMW sold.

There’s a reason why Rolls-Royce is rolling out all these special edition models in China . The market is fast becoming the largest one for luxury automakers and what better way to stake a significant chunk of it than to entice customers with vehicles no other country in the world will carry.

Sounds like a smart plan, right?

Rolls-Royce seems to think so, and that’s why its been busy the past couple of months launching special-edition Ghost models , including its latest creation, the Ghost Cantor Glory Edition.

Recently introduced at Auto Guangzhou, the Ghost Cantor Glory Edition pays homage to Guangzhou with a number of design elements attributed to the south Chinese city, including drawing inspiration from the iconic Canton Tower, while also adding touches of Guangzhou, no more distinct than the addition of the city’s Five Rams emblem in the coachline, veneer panels, headrests and dashboard.

A two-tone color scheme also points to the uniqueness of the Ghost Cantor Glory Edition with RR opting to use a Madeira Red for a glorious regal history and Cassiopeia Silver or Carrera White for the bright and modern present. The contrasting colors offer a touch of balance between the colors of the night sky with the metallic body of the aforementioned Canton Tower.

The finer details, including customer options to give this special-edition ride more distinct styling, can be accomplished through its Bespoke Atelier program, which is coming to China for the first time, and offering a range of customization options for all those deep-pocketed Chinese buyers.

When Gemballa unveiled the GTP 700 tuning kit for the Porsche Panamera we didn’t payed much attention to it, as we saw it as just another kit for the luxury German sedan . After all, other than the 700 horsepower on tap, the kit did offer much else.

Well, it looks like Gemballa decided to prove us wrong in thinking this was "just another kit, as the new GTP 700 just became the fastest sedan in the world to weight over two metric tonnes (4,400 pounds).

After making its world debut at the 2013 Essen Motor Show , the new GTP700 was taken to the Nardo high-speed track for a test drive. Gemballa said that the record was an accident, because the car was not prepared in advanced for this achievement. It was just a customer-ready GTP 700, equipped with 22-inch wheels and checking in at 2,045 kg (4.508 pounds) — 2,225 kg (4,905 pounds) with the driver and the fuel included.

With this "equipment," the Panamera GTP 700 hit a top speed of 338.8 km/h (210.5 mph). Additionally. the GTP 700 can sprint from 0 to 62 mph in 3.3 seconds, from 0 to 124 mph in 9.6 seconds and from 0 to 186 mph in 26.5 seconds.

After a pretty cool tuning kit prepared for the BMW M5 , Vorsteiner turned its attention to another German luxury car, this time a Mercedes CLS63 AMG . As with pretty much all the other kits prepared by the tuner, the only updates offered for the CLS are limited to the exterior look.

To be completely honest with you, the CLS 63 AMG really doesn’t need any updates, as it comes fully loaded from the factory, including a 5.5-liter, V-8 engine that delivers a total of 518 horsepower and 516 pound-feet of torque. With the optional AMG Performance Pack, the power jumps to 550 horsepower and 590 pound-feet of torque.

The updates that Vorsteiner made to the exterior are limited to just three elements that give the CLS63 AMG a sportier look and to further improve the aerodynamic features of the four-door coupe .

To be perfectly honest with you, the 2014 Bentley Flying Spur and the 2014 Rolls-Royce Ghost are not necessarily our favorite cars. We’re more interested in nimble sports car, as opposed to massive luxury cars that go fast in a straight line. But if we had to choose between one to have handed to us, we would definitely opt for the Bentley limousine, just because it looks a bit sportier that the Rolls .

This is just our opinions, and we’re sire that plenty of you would take the Ghost. Let’s have a look to see that the folks at Motor Trend think on the two models, and which one would they prefer, as they put the two models against one another in the latest episode of "Head 2 Head."

Be prepared for a slightly unconventional test, as the Motor Trend folks wanted to see if the two models could do a little painting, on top of the typical testing. Check out the video to see which model did best!
