luxury cars

Luxury cars are expensive and come in all shapes: sedan, coupe or convertible. They offer all the comfort, luxury and performance but you will have to pay premium price. German cars like BMW or Mercedes are the first brand that come to our mind but nowadays nearly all car makers offer nice and comfortable models that enter in the luxury car category.

BMW’s involvement in MotoGP is well-chronicled, having been bestowed the title of "Official Car of MotoGP" for the past 15 years.

Seeing an opportunity to commemorate the occasion, BMW and MotoGP have partnered up yet again to present a special one-off BMW M6 to the best MotoGP qualifier at the end of the season. This particular collaboration has actually been going on since 2003, but this year, they’re upping the ante with a pretty incredible prize.

The special-edition M6, which was recently unveiled at the Spanish Grand Prix, is dressed in a fancy Frozen Black Metallic exterior to go with an equally fancy set of 20-inch matte-black, light-alloy wheels. Meanwhile, the interior of the M6 Frozen Black carries a unique combination of carbon fiber trim with leather upholstery in Merino and Sakhir Orange. Oh, and don’t forget the M multi-function seats, the heads-up display and the GPS navigation capabilities.

No performance mods were given to this unique M6, so you can expect it to be powered by a twin-turbo 4.4-liter V-8 engine that produces 560 horsepower and 502 pound-feet of torque. With those numbers, the M6 is capable of hitting 0-60 mph in just 4.2 seconds with a top speed of 155 mph.

A few months ago, Elon Musk announced Tesla’s intention to develop an optional package that would put Tesla Model S on same level as the McLaren MP4-12C . Quite an interesting decision, but it finally came to life – sort of – with the announcement of a new "Plus" package priced at an extra $6,500.

The new package can only be ordered with the 85-kWh Performance version of the Model S and, according to Tesla, it improves "performance, comfort and efficiency."

The package will add revised suspension dampers and bushings, updated stabilizer bars and tires. The rear tires are 20 mm (0.78 inches) wider and staggered for improved acceleration on low-grip surfaces. Range improves 6 to 12 miles with 21-inch wheels.

Alongside to the new Plus package, Tesla also plans to offer a Plus Retrofit package for current Model S owners. It will be available this summer and will cost $13,500. According to the first details, this new package will "provide the enthusiast driver with a more responsive car and added cornering grip while maintaining excellent ride quality."

It’s only been a few months since Mercedes revealed its pocket rocket, the CLA-Class, , and the car is already getting the attention of one of the world’s best Mercedes tuners this side of AMG.

German aftermarket company Brabus has presented its first tuning program for the CLA-Class and while it looks a little too subtle for our liking, we have no doubt that Brabus is still in the process of completing this program.

When it does, we expect nothing less than the stamp of awesomeness that can only come from a Brabus-tuned vehicle.

There’s a lot to like about the CLA-Class, particularly its stature within Benz’s lineup of being the affordable luxury sports sedan that’s geared toward the younger market. To its credit, Mercedes didn’t take any shortcuts in developing the car, giving us a car that looks worthy of the Silver Arrows emblem while also fitting it with a 2.0-liter inline-four engine that can produce up to 208 horsepower and 258 pound-feet of torque with a 0-to-60 mph time of 6.7 seconds with a top speed of 149 mph.

Audi A9

The long awaited Audi A9 has been in limbo for the past couple of years with Audi seemingly taking its time to unveil its new flagship sedan. And that’s after word spread out that the German automaker trademarked the A9 and S9 names last year.

But there appears to be a groundswell of movement in Ingolstadt these days and according to Auto Motor und Sport, the A9 is expected to be launched in 2016.

Circle those calendars, fellas.

The date of the A9’s launch has changed multiple times, but the latest timetable seems to point to a more concrete expectation as to when the luxury sedan finally comes out and smiles to the cameras.

Another interesting tidbit surrounding the A9 involves the platform it’s going to use, which apparently is the same one that will underpin the next-generation Q7 . Now, that’s interesting, considering that the Q7 is a pretty large SUV.

Guess it’ll be interesting to see what the A9 is going to look like, but fortunately, we made a rendering of the luxury sedan (above). Read more about the A9 after the jump.

The Mercedes E-Class is a luxury car normally reserved for suit-wearing, business types who know how to ride around in style. The car itself already sports a sleek and stylish design that underscores the class of its Mercedes badge.

But, and there’s always a but, the Mercedes E-Class isn’t exempt from aftermarket programs, especially if said aftermarket company can build a complementary kit that improves the luxury car’s looks while keeping its design spirit intact.

That’s where German Special Customs come into the picture. We’ve seen these fellas work on Mercedes models before, most recently on the 2013 CLS63 AMG.

This time around, it went to work on the E-Class, fitting it with an aggressive aerodynamic package that includes a plethora of new components, a lot of which were made from carbon fiber.

It certainly goes without saying the end product, judging by the photos GSC released, does remarkable justice to keeping the E-Class’ style going while adding a touch of panache to it.

Infiniti LE

Infiniti’s strong sales performance in recent years has given the automaker reason to look forward to bigger things. And apparently, those bigger things equate to a pair of new vehicles added to its lineup.

Talking to Car and Driver, Infiniti’s new president Johan de Nysschen is looking at the possibility of strengthening its lineup with the addition of a new flagship sedan that de Nysschen describes as an "upscale, very emotional, high-performance luxury sedan." Basically, he’s looking at the possibility of developing a flagship sedan that will follow a different formula and not march to the beat of the industry.

So what does that mean, exactly? That’s the question on everyone’s mind, and understandably so because not a lot of people seem to have a clear grasp on what Infiniti is planning to do. The most ideal comparison as far as a unique flagship sedan that didn’t follow a certain design script is the Porsche Panamera . A fastback model has been thrown around, according to Car and Driver, which seems to lend to the suggestion that if and when Infiniti decides to introduce a new flagship sedan to the world, it’s going to take a different approach on its design.

Equally compelling news is consideration being put on also building a high-performance coupe based on the platform of the aforementioned flagship sedan. That’s a pretty exciting development, considering Infiniti is lacking that kind of poster-worthy sports car that other automakers have.

If there’s a chance to introduce a pair of new and exciting models that will take the Japanese automaker to another level, Infiniti should jump at the chance of building on its sales momentum.

The SL-Class is one of the most beautiful cars in Mercedes ’ lineup this side of the SLS AMG , and the SL 63 AMG and SL 65 AMG models are even more impressive yet. Unfortunately, their respective price tags of £110,785 ($172,292) and £168,285 ($261,716) in the UK make them pretty much out of reach for the average SL-Class buyer.

Well, if you can handle having most of the AMG show but only a tiny bit of its go on the 2013 SL-Class , then you will be thrilled with Mercedes’ latest announcement. Mercedes-Benz is releasing an AMG Sport variant of the 2013 SL-Class that buyers can base on either the SL 350 or SL 500 at a fraction of the “real” AMG ’s price.

Much like the M Sport packages from Bimmer , the AMG Sport package is almost solely aesthetic, but there are a few small mechanical and handling updates to help out some.

The 5-Series GT is one of the most unsuccessful models BMW has ever offered. However, the company is bound and determined to get the GT formula right and has now expanding this option to new generation 3-Series .

The difference between the unsuccessful 5-Series GT and the new 3-Series GT is that the latter will drop the twin-door hatch design in favor of a normal one piece hatch. It will also be 7.87 inches longer than the standard model and offer the added bonus of more headroom due to the shooting brake layout. The four-door coupe designed body will combine a set of raised, sliding rear seats with a high lifting tailgate that should make accessing the larger cargo area very trouble-free. This formula may very well make the car a bit more successful than the 5-Series GT.

The official debut will be made next month at the 2013 Geneva Motor Show.

UPDATE 04/05/2013: BMW has just released an all-new product presentation video of the upcoming 3 Series GT. You can see the video above.

About two weeks ago, Aston Martin unveiled the Hybrid Hydrogen Rapide S , which has been announced to race the 41st ADAC Zurich 24 Hours of Nürburgring next month. It looks like the company didn’t want to wait that long and it took the prototype to Nordschleife for a testing session.

The test was completed on Saturday, April 27th when Aston Martin wrote a new page in history, as the Hybrid Hydrogen Rapide S became the first hydrogen-fueled model to lap the 24 km (14-mile) Nordschleife circuit in Germany with zero CO2 emissions. Behind the wheel was Aston Martin Chief Executive Officer, Dr. Ulrich Bez.

After this test, the Hybrid Hydrogenfour-door sedan will also become the first hydrogen-powered car to compete in an international event and the first zero CO2 emission car to pace the Nürburgring 24-hour race. The car will compete in the experimental class (E1-XP) after passing rigorous technical and safety tests.

After teasing it for quite some time now, Lexus has finally unveiled the third generation IS sedan at the 2013 Detroit Auto Show. The new model will be put on sale in mid-2013 in both rear- and all-wheel-drive versions, and in 250 and 350 trim levels. There will also be an F-Sport variant, and Europe and Japan will get an IS 300h version featuring the new Atkinson-cycle 4-cylinder, 2.5-liter engine combined with a high-torque motor.

The 2014 Lexus IS features the same design language we have already seen in models like GS and LS , including an inverted trapezoidal upper grille and slanted lower grille. Unlike the previous models, which featured a three-projector LED headlamp unit, the new IS receives Lexus’ new powerfully articulated headlamp cluster design with L-shaped Daytime Running Lights (DRL) located independently below.

Both models will be offered with a V-6 engine, one in a 2.5-liter displacement and the other one in 3.5-liter displacement.
