2011 Maserati GranTurismo MC Stradale

Maserati may err on the side of of caution when choosing between luxury and speed, but eventually speed-loving fanatics have no choice but to reveal their road-gripping, fire-breathing side. Alas, we now have evidence of Maserati’s wild side. Just a couple of weeks before the Italian luxury brand was set to unveil their new special edition Gran Turismo at the Paris Auto Show, the company has jumped the gun and released the first official details of the fastest, lightest, and most powerful Maserati in the line-up. We hope everyone is just as intrigued as we were because this is a side of Maserati that should come out more often.

The special edition is called the GranTurismo MC Stradale and is due to go on sale in Europe in the first quarter of 2011 with a U.S. launch shortly thereafter. It is powered by a 4.7 liter V8 engine that delivers 450 HP - an improvement over the standard 405 HP - while still offering the same fuel consumption as a standard Gran Turismo. It also comes with an improved aerodynamic down force and will brake the 186 mph barrier.

Inspired by the Trofeo GranTurismo MC and the race-winning GT4 motorsport models, the Maserati GranTurismo MC Stradale special edition has been tweaked and modified as a direct result of the lessons learned from Maserati’s three racing programs. But what makes this vehicle even better is that it’s road legal.

More details about the car will be released closer to its official unveiling.

UPDATE 07/27/2011: Maserati North American has announced that the new MC Stradale will go on sale at a starting price of $139,000. With its 185 mph top speed, this will be the fastest Maserati offered on the US market.

Hit the jump to read more about the Maserati GranTurismo MC Stradale.

Exterior

Maserati GranTurismo MC Stradale

The MC Stradale is inspired by the Trofeo GranTurismo MC, but it needed to be modified in order to become road legal. For that Maserati Maserati needed a car with great aerodynamic down force at high speed without creating more drag, even while it is diverting airflow into effectively cooling its brakes.

So, the MC Stradale has received a new front splitter and a redesigned rear bumper that adds an extra 48 mm to the total length, while the front splitter, side skirts and the front guard panels all combine as one unit in order to push the nose of the car down at high speed, to cool the brakes, extract the hot air from the braking system and to provide down force along the length of the car.

Also, the car gets two hot air extraction outlets in the bonnet and the rear bumper has also been re-profiled, with the exhausts emerging closer to the center of the car. The entire look is completed by a new set of flow-formed 20-inch wheels.

Interior

The interior also needed to be adapted for a high performance sports car. The shell seats are made in carbon fiber combined with high-tech padding and materials and a Trident logo stitched into the headrests.

But the most impressive feature with the new MC Stradale is the Human-Machine Interface that allows driver to change the driving mode. The car will start in Auto mode, but there is also a Sport and a Race mode.

The instrument clusters have received the traditional Maserati blue background color, the pedals are made in aluminum, while Alcantara is used to trim the center console, the armrest lid, the door armrests and handles and the curve above the instrument cluster.

Engine

Maserati GranTurismo MC Stradale

Undeer the hood of the new GranTurismo MC Stradale Maserati has placed a 4.7 liter V8 engine that delivers 450 HP and 376 lbs-ft of torque at 4750rpm. Most of the improvements have come from the Friction Reduction Program, which involved the redesign of the oil sump’s fluid dynamics and Diamond-Like Coating of the tappets and the camshaft lobes.

The engine is mated to an electro-actuated six-speed manual gearbox that can shift gears in only 60 milliseconds (0.06 seconds) thanks to its computer control and optimized gear selection.

The MC Stradale will sprint from 0 to 60 mph in 4.6 seconds and will hit a top speed of 186 mph.

Prices

In Europe, the car is priced at 154,721 euro (around $205,000 at the current exchange rates). We’d let you know the US prices, but the MC Stradale won’t be available on our side of the pond. Typical, we know.

Competition

Maserati GranTurismo MC Stradale

Now that the MC Stradale has been launched on the market, Ferrari and Lamborghini should check their rear mirrors. But, one of the biggest competitors for the Maserati model is the Porsche GT3 . The German model is powered by a 3.8-liter six-cylinder naturally-aspirated engine that develops maximum output of 435 bhp and sprints from 0 to 60 mph in about 4 seconds. Yes, the Porsche model is faster than the MC Stradale, but the Maserati model has the advantages of delivering a better aerodynamic, and it is also better looking than the GT3 model.

Also, Aston Martin’s latestV8 Vantage S is a pretty serious competitor for the MC Stradale. It gets a V8 engine that delivers 430 hp at 7,300rpm and 361 lb-ft of torque at 5,000rpm and is capable to hit a top speed of 189 mph. The Vantage model has the advantage of being much cheaper than the MC Stradale, but yet again the Maserati model will offer you the same driving experience at any other race car out there.

LOVE IT
  • Impressive aerodynamic package
  • Three driving modes
  • Fast
LEAVE IT
  • Not available on the US market
  • Much expensive than competitors

Wow! I loved this car from the moment I saw it, nearly 10 years ago. Maserati always has had great astetics .... With Ferrari providing the motor what’s not to like! My mom always wanted one, so they have a special place in my heart. My god I just love the seductive looks of the designers art.... Just beautiful!!! I guess where I encounter resistance is in performance. Another car that I hold in high esteem is the Shelby American GT 350 which in its most extreme form is a world beater, 625hp, the suspension from hell and built to endure the rigors of racing abuse. In 2011 it whipped everything up to 4 times it’s cost, Ferrari’s, Lambos, Porche’s and Vettes....by 4-5 seconds around the track in Las Vegas. For Muscular reasons I love it’s astetics, it looks like it will rip your head of and Defacate down you neck. The car is a monster, American, yes, but, quality built and a monster......very difficult to compete at Shellbys level, he always figured out a way to win....and he almost always did it with finesse, not adding muscle, Shelby was known for building cars that handled incredibly well, as was the case for the original GT 350, Cobra 289 or 427 S/C, Shellby Daytona, Ford GT 40. Well I guess power at times was involved, but they were with in the rules, okay so I lied, just a bit!!!

Maserati would be lovely as always, and the performance is great as well! It’s just sad that it’s not available for US market. And when talking about the pricing, I think GT3 is not a bad alternative.

This one is primarily done more to impress folks with the car’s looks rather than it’s performance. However, it would really be great if Maserati can come up with a performance version.

The interior looks great and I think the carbon-fiber material used makes the car look more luxurious. By the way, the performance is quite good too.

I would still prefer to have a Porsche vehicle than with this one. Its engine specification is not so satisfying the fact that it is a sports car and that made me think if why is it too pricey compared to its competitor.

The maximum speed of Porsche is more impressive than with this Maserati. However, when it comes into exterior appearance, I must say that this Granturismo is looks better than on its rival.

This sports car looks so cool and neat with its body paint. smiley Anyway, I love the angst of this one and the fact that they justify the aggressive looks of it by using an impressive engine for this.

The engine output of this stradale is already kind of impressive but not great for the fact that it is a sports car. I just don’t think that it could beat its competitor on that power output.

Straddle is the simplest sports car that I saw today, but it still looks so impressive and appealing about that. However, I don’t think that its engine could be really good enough on this race car.

What do expect guys? It is a sports car, so I don’t think that it needs to have such an elegant and luxurious interior. Anyway, GranTurismo is truly very attractive for me, even though it had only a less power output.

The aerodynamic package of this Maserati GranTurismo is truly so impressive, but when it comes into its interior, I must say that I’m not fond with it. However, I’m glad that it had a safety feature.

When it comes into power output, I can say that this Maserati GranTurismo MC Stradale is really impressive, even the exterior appearance is looking so great in spite of having only a simple detailing.

The exterior appearance of this GranTurismo is definitely very striking on it, but I’m so disappointed on its interior features. Well, sorry to say, but I found it so boring most especially on its interior touch.

This Maserati GranTurismo is absolutely so impressive on its aerodynamics package and I must say that its aesthetic design and hygienic body paint, is only adding more appeal on this one. Having a car like this is very satisfying! smiley

I also love the decent appearance of this MC Stradale despite of the fact that it is a sports car, anyway I have to say that I’m not impressed with its interior though I found that the seat belt that it has can really give some safety both on the driver and on its associate.

I love the angst that it had even though it only had a simple platform and styling. I also noticed that the combination of decency and the angst that the sports car had been really looking so fabulous.

Well, this one is worth money spending for even though its too pricey. Anyway, I’m also fond with the appearance of this GranTurismo! It looks so elegant and classy that anyone can’t resist! smiley

Very expressive look for GranTurismo MC, this new edition became more faster and detailed powerful Maserati. Prior to its competition for me it has an advantage specially in the exterior elevated part.
