The first rumors about a new Maserati sedan placed under the current Quattroporte appeared at the beginning of 2010, but after a couple of months of heating up the air waves, the new car fell by the wayside while everyone made room for the new Audis, Ferraris, and such. Now the official launch is creeping up on all of us and new details are being revealed.

The future model has recently been caught testing for the first time and although it may look like a Quattroporte, it features a shorter wheelbase, smaller front brakes, an ill-fitting windscreen, and one exhaust pipe on each side of the rear.

While there are no technical details on this new model, it is rumored to be offered in two versions: an entry level priced at about $68,000 and a top version more powerful and about 20% more expensive. The new sub-Quattroporte four-door saloon will arrive in 2012 as a competitor to the BMW M5, the Mercedes E63 AMG, and the Jaguar XFR.

Exterior and Interior

We expect the new model to feature the same Maserati design language as the other three models in the line-up, but with a little more modernization. The interior will be all about luxury, but for the top version, Maserati will also try to offer some sportiness to its customers.

The Engine

There are no details on the car’s powertrain just yet, but it is rumored that Maserati will offer both V6 and V8 engines, both mated to an eight-speed ZF automatic gearbox. As for the platform, it is believed the new model will be built on the same one as the Alfa Romeo 166 replacement.

When Can I Get One?

The new Baby Quattroporte will make its official debut sometime in 2012. It will be offered in two versions, with prices starting from about $68,000. The car will be designed in-house by Fiat Centro Stile under the leadership of Fiat chief Lorenzo Ramaciotti.

The Competition

While the next baby Maserati’s focus will be on luxury, it is also set to take on models like the BMW M5, the Mercedes E63 AMG, and the Jaguar XFR.

The new generation M5 will use a twin-turbocharged 4.4-liter V8 engine that will deliver around 555 hp and 680 Nm torque, making the new M5 far better than the model it replaces. The XFR on the other hand gets a V8 engine with 510hp and the E63 AMG carries a V8 engine producing 525 HP. Taking all of these numbers under consideration, we expect the future Maserati to develop at least 500 HP and be capable of a top speed of 180 mph.

I love this Baby Quattroporte! It really looks so cute on its appearance, and it seems so sweet smiley but I’m quite wondering if what will really be the interior of this one will look like.

It really looks like a baby! smiley And I found it so cute on its platform design, and I love the body paint that they used on it. It gives the boyish looks of it. I just hope that it also had an impressive interior.

A baby Sedan huh. For me the color is lame. The competition is tough because of the poor performance. It will have a hard time. The price of the car is expensive even if it is not official.

Apparently Porsche has been reluctant to include a dual-clutch unit in the GT3, not only because it’s a ‘purists car’ but because the PDK setup is too heavy. This new PDK-S unit, however, will solve much of the weight concern

According to his unnamed source, the 991 GT3 will get a 480-hp motor (up 45-hp) from a larger 4.0-liter flat-six. It will also offer an optional PDK dual-clutch transmission, which is referred to as PDK-S.

But the main thing Maserati should work on is building this car as reliable as a Lexus or Mercedes, no one wants to pay $150k and have unnecessary servicing all the time. My dad really wants one but I tell him to hold off until the brand can prove to be reliable. He keeps his cars for sometimes 10 years...

This car is NOT getting old. It does NOT need an exterior redesign. The only thing that can be improved is maybe a new interior layout (Something about that center console just doesn’t fit with the rest, maybe the buttons) and of course a technology refresh wouldn’t hurt either.
