Mazda MX5 Miata

Mazda MX5 Miata

Mazda Takeri Concept

With the debut of the new Takeri Concept , Mazda has revealed the design language for their future Mazda6 sedan, but that isn’t the only new model the Japanese company has in their future plans. In a recent interview with Automotive News, Robert Davis - Mazda’s Senior Vice President of U.S. operations has announced that the company plans to unveil four redesigned models by 2014.

The first to arrive will be a major update for the CX-5 in the spring of 2012. It will be followed by a redesigned Mazda6 and redesigns of the Mazda3 ,MX-5 Miata , and CX-9 in 2013.

The big news is that these redesigned models will not only receive exterior and interior updates, but new lightweight platforms and new gasoline and diesel powertrains that boost power and fuel economy. By 2016, Mazda also plans to add stop-start, regenerative braking, and hybrid technologies.

The new platform developed for the four new models will be the first one developed solely by Mazda. The company has been using platforms shared with Ford Motor Co. for most of its vehicles, but since Ford sold its stake in Mazda Mazda in 2006, the Japanese company has announced it has no plans to share its new platforms and powertrain technologies for U.S. vehicles with Ford.

Here’s a vehicle that may be sporting an orange and black combination, but has nothing to do with the spooky and wicked Halloween season. This is the Mazda MX-5 Super20 , a vehicle whose name may sound a bit familiar due to Mazda’s entry into SEMA last year. The 2010 Super20 was created to celebrate the MX-5’s 20th anniversary, but this year, Mazda decided to bring a 2.0 version of that same vehicle with a killer paint job and a load of accessories.

The 2011 Mazda MX-5 Super20 features a Hyper Orange Mica exterior paint finish with black stripes to soften the bright blow. The paint job is topped off with a stationary, glossy black hardtop to replace the vehicle’s standard soft-top. The interior has also been modified and now features a color-matched roll bar and black leather seats with suede seat inserts and channel and orange contrast stitching.

The Super20 was also privy to a few performance modifications, such as a DPTune reflashed ECU, a Racing Beat 304-stainless steel header and exhaust, and Racing Beat hollow front and rear anti-roll bars. These features were joined by an ACT organic street clutch, MazdaSpeed coil overs and a shock tower brace, Power Slot slotted brake rotors, StopTech stainless steel brake lines and street performance brake pads, and SpeedSource front brake ducts. The MX-5 Super20 was finished with black 16-inch Enkei RPF1 twin-spoke racing wheels, Toyo Proxes RA-1 245/45ZR16 high-performance tires, and 20mm H&R Track+ bolt-on wheel spacers in the rear and 15mm Sparco wheel spacers in the front.

From the looks of things, we think Mazda threw together the Super20 last year and decided to really work hard this year to present a Super20 worthy of being called a celebratory vehicle.

Chevrolet Corvette Carlisle Blue Grand Sport Concept

With the exception of the Ford Mustang and the Chevrolet Camaro , sports cars - modified ones, at that - are considered the life blood of the SEMA Auto Show.

Pick-ups and SUVs are slowly gaining ground, but when it comes to sheer level of interest, sports cars are right up there with the two American muscle cars. This year, the SEMA Auto Show will be presenting plenty of mouth-watering examples of how sports coupes can be modded into pieces of automotive heaven.

In this list, you’ll find a lot of variety. American sports cars. Japanese sports cars. Korean sports cars. And there’s even one from the Philippines, believe it or not.

So when you head past the jump to read our SEMA preview for the sports cars, be sure to have a napkin or hanky in your hand because there’s going to a lot of drooling.

Generations of gearheads have come to fall in love with the Mazda MX-5 Miata for its combination of drop-dead good looks, punch-power performance capabilities, and overall affordable price. That’s why the model has been one of the most consistently popular lines in the industry for the better part of 20-something years.

At the 2011 SEMA Auto Show , Mazda is set to reveal the MX-5 Spyder, giving us even more reason to bat our eyelashes at the iconic Japanese roadster. Mazda opted to tease these photos without so much as giving any information about it so we’re left to our senses to see what kind of package the hot stuff sports car has.

Judging from the photo, it appears that the MX-5 Spyder was given an automotive diet of sorts. The lowered suspension, combined with the new set of larger Brembo brakes are both in the spirit of what a track-version MX-5 Miata could be packaged in. Add that to the sexy silver-and-red finish, a soft and skimpy top where the normal folding roof used to be, a low-lying spoiler, a bigger central intake, and cooling ducts for those front brakes and you have a car that’s ready to stretch its legs on a race tarmac real soon.

In terms of performance, your guess is as good as ours, but if it’s as impressive as the car’s overall look, then we’re about to be treated to a MX-5 that will undoubtedly leave some drool on the SEMA floor.

Nissan Esflow

Nissan is rumored to be working on an affordable sports car, as a rival to the Mazda MX-5. The catch? Nissan’s sports car will feature an electric or plug-in hybrid drivetrain.

The Mazda MX-5 Miata is the car that usually comes up in discussion when automakers set their sights on developing an affordable sports car. Since its debut in 1989, the Mazda MX-5 has become the standard for world-class handling in a package to fit anyone’s budget. Some would accuse the MX-5 of being underpowered, but when it comes to the ability to carve corners with razor-like precision, the MX-5 has few rivals, and none in its price range.

If new rumors surrounding Nissan are correct, that’s about to change. As part of its plan to launch 52 new cars over the next five years, Nissan is rumored to be working on an affordable rear-drive sports car. It will be built on a midsize platform purchased from Daimler, that ultimately will be used on the next generation 370Z , GT-R , and Infiniti G as well.

Mazda is squeezing in as many MX-5 special editions as it possibly can before releasing the next generation of the small sports car, and today another one is getting added to the list. The latest special edition MX5 is called the Black Limited Edition and was inspired by this year’s highly successful MX-5 GT race car . It will be limited to only 500 units and, on the British market, will be priced from £22,995 - or about $37,500 at the current exchange rates.

The new special edition will be distinguished by three unique paint finishes - Spirited Green Metallic, Crystal White Pearlescent, and Velocity Red Mica - and a Brilliant Black powered retractable hard-top. These exterior colors will be contrasted by dark "gun metal" 17-inch alloy wheels.

On the interior, the MX5 will get black leather with contrasting "sand" color stitching, a Piano Black steering wheel and deco panel, and Limited Edition floor mats. Model recognition will come from unique ‘Black Limited Edition’ exterior badging and uniquely numbered interior plaques.

Aside from the distinguishing features, the Mazda MX5 Black Limited Edition will also get a slew of standard equipment, including climate control air-conditioning, a premium Bose audio system, an integrated hands-free Bluetooth system, cruise control, and front fog lights.

Check the new pictures out and maybe you’ll just end up scoring one of the 500 available pieces of the Japanese sports car.

Top Gear USA To Premiere November 21st

Top Gear USA is back for its second season and, after watching the first two episodes of The Car Show , we were hoping it would start off with a bang. Unfortunately, it was more like a muffled beep.

The only segment in the first episode of the season was a series of challenges trying to convince viewers that pick-up trucks could be replaced by two-door models. The guys ended up choosing a Ford Maverick, a BMW BMW 335E, and a Mazda Mazda Miata as their specimens. The challenges were a bit eventful and a little humorous, but overall a bit disappointing.

Maybe Top Gear USA was trying to move away from the mirror image segments from the original Top Gear , but this path was not the right one. We just hope that the next episode adds a bit more oomph because, for the first episode of the season, we thought more could have been done to convince viewers that this was the car show to watch.

The essence and beauty of the Mazda MX-5 lies in its small sports car body and engine. Lately, however, it seems as if bigger is getting continually better and Australian native, George Covacic, is showing proof of that with his highly modified MX-5 Bullet Roadster. According to Covacic, this particular model is the fifth Roadster that was built in the late 90s and the first to feature a V8 engine (all original Bullet Roadsters carried the RX-7 13B powerplant from the Mazda RX7). As of right now, all we can do is take his word for it, but if that’s all you need then this model is currently on sale for $46,191.

The 4.6L all-alloy, fuel injected V8 engine found in this Bullet Roadster was supplied by Covacic himself and came mated to a Tremac 5-speed manual transmission. Covacic also contributed the differential from a Holden Commodore SS , but the brakes and suspension - like the original Bullets - came from a Mazda RX-7 . As of right now, the Covacic Bullet only has 10,008 miles on it.

As for the non-technical stats, this particular Bullet comes in a "Grace Green" with a black leather interior and features a number of elements that were considered very high end at the time of its release. These include 17-inch alloys, air conditioning, power windows, and an Alpine CD stereo sound system, as well as a Momo steering wheel, shift knob, and drilled pedals.

Mazda is celebrating their entrance into the Guinness Book of World Records with the launch of the special edition Record Series MX-5 . This special edition will be offered in two versions: black (limited to only 120 units) and white (produced exclusively by the Italian branch of the house of Hiroshima).

The Black Record Series model will be powered by a 1.8-liter engine that delivers 126 HP and is paired with five-speed manual gearbox. It will be painted in Sparkling Black combined with a glossy finish for the wheels, chrome handles for the doors and frames, and silver and chrome-ringed fog lamps for the front grille. The interior will get light gray leather and will offer a radio with a CD player and MP3 player, Aux jack, six speakers, and Bluetooth connectivity.

The White Record Series model will get a 2.0 liter engine with 160 HP, paired with a six-speed manual or automatic transmission. Its exterior will be painted in a Chrystal White Pearl color which contrasts with the black Recaro leather interior. This version will be focused on sport, so it will add a sport suspension and limited slip rear differential, while the inside offers a premium Bose audio system with 6 CD charger, seven speakers, and Bluetooth connectivity.

Mazda is going to compete in the Britcar MSA British Endurance Championship 2011 with a lightweight MX-5 GT. The model has been created in cooperation with Tunbridge Wells-based Jota Sport and weights only 1873 lbs.

"The MX-5 production race car’s modest power output, bullet proof reliability and nimble handling demonstrated last year how the MX-5 can be competitive against some of the purpose-built Lotus, VW and BMW BMW race cars. With a higher power output combined with the durability, reliability and handling attributes that the MX-5 is renowned for; the MX-5 GT race car will be strong contender against the more powerful race cars in its class," said Graeme Fudge, PR Director, Mazda UK.

The MX-5 GT will be driven by two Mazda works drivers including experienced Mazda racing driver, Mark Ticehurst and racing driver, Owen Mildenhall.

UPDATE 08/19/11: Mazda has come out with a new video featuring the MX5-GT taking a hot lap around the world famous Spa Francorchamps race track in Belgium. The video is hosted by Mark Ticehurst as he pilots his little sportster around the track. Check it out!
