2011 Mazda MX-5 Miata Karai Special Edition

There’s not much arguing the fact that the MX-5 Miata is one of Mazda ’s most popular models of all time. So if there was any other car in the Japanese automaker’s lineup that has earned the right to spawn special edition models left and right, it’s their iconic sports roadster.

With that thought in mind, Mazda has once again given fans of the MX-5 Miata another special edition model for their consumption.

This one, called the Karai, comes from the automaker’s European division and has been given plenty of new digs that will most definitely give it plenty of attention from die-hard Miata fans in Europe.

You can make a case that the all these special edition Miatas have become one too many, even for its popularity. But that’s the thing with this venerable roadster; somehow, people just can’t get enough of it, no matter what their tastes and preferences are.

The Karai, which means ’sharp’ in Japanese, certainly fits the name it was given. Sharply dressed with plenty of aesthetic upgrades, the MX-5 Miata Karai is one that’s going to be a hit to European die-hards of the legendary model.

Exterior and Interior

Mazda MX-5 Miata Karai Special Edition

The MX-5 Miata Karai has been dressed with a unique lime-green paint finish that’s being called "Metal Green Metallic". Name redundancy notwithstanding, the Miata Karai’s color scheme does offer a fresh and dainty look to it. In addition to the new paint finish, the special editon MX-5 also features a contrasting glossy black finish for the metal retractable top, new exterior mirrors, a number of trim accents on the the front grille and fog lamp surrounds, and a new set of 17" multi-spoke alloy wheels shod in low performance tires.

Inside the car, Mazda dressed up the pair of Recaro sport seats with a black leather trim and Alcantara with white white stitching. Pedals are made of aluminum while the steering wheel comes in leather with white stitching, and to finish things off, there’s also plenty of glossy black interior trims to go around.

Mazda is also offering an optional sport package that features interior add-ons like an iPod and USB adapter and an exclusive set of floor mats.

Performance

Mazda MX-5 Miata Karai Special Edition

The MX-5 Miata Karai is powered by a stock 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine that produces 160 horsepower. Despite the absence of a performance upgrade, the Miata is one of those models that don’t need engine improvements to sell like hotcakes. On its own, this particular car already attracts more than its fair share of attention. But if you prefer performance bumps, you can avail of the optional sport package that comes with a new exhaust system, a lowering kit for the suspension and a few more goodies to go around.

Pricing

The Japanese automaker has pegged the MX-5 Miata Karai to be limited to just 165 units for Germany at a price of 30,000 each - the model comes with a special Sin Sin n timepiece to commemorate the occasion - which is around $43,500 based on current exchange rates. No word yet on whether the model will also drop in other markets, but considering that the MX-5 is a smoking hot model with a devout worldwide following, we wouldn’t be surprised if other countries get in on the fun with this special edition model.

Competition

Going up against a car that’s universally loved like the Miata is a tall order for any automaker not named Mazda. The MX-5’s combination of good looks, powerful engine, and affordable pricing means that it really is on a class of its own. But if you’re one of those that prefer alternatives to the fan favorite, you can avail of other options, including the soon-to-be rebooted Honda S2000 .

For now, the Japanese sports roadster market is all about the MX-5 Miata and the only real competition the Karai has is within the ranks of all other special edition Miata models out on the market these days.

Green vehicles are really so noticeable, just like this Miata. However, I think Mazda should focus first on how they could boost more the engine that they were typically using.

I must say that this special edition of Mazda, is very striking and absolutely so awesome! However, I hope they also include some pictures of its interior, and I think they should upgrade the engine of this one.

It is really looks so fabulous on its body paint, and I must say that I am also so fond with green cars. smiley Anyway, I hope that it had some impressive interior features and amenities either.

I really love green cars. That’s why I’m so fond with this one and the engine that it had that can deliver 160 horsepower is I think quite good enough for this kind of car. I noticed that it looks so simple but very appealing.

Very well designed MX-5, this karai edition technically became more iconic sportier look. The combination of style made it more certainly outstanding. Looking at the image above it looks good even in dark.

Yeah, I don’t think that special edition is impressive. However, the MX-5 is quite a powerful vehicle.

That’s why I really hate the special edition for there’s nothing so stunning that was offered here. The styling was great but I don’t think that it has an impressive speed performance.

The car seemed to be smiling. It is like the protagonist in the movie "cars" but they differ in color. The color green is an exotic one that makes the appear gorgeous.

Well, I would agree that the name fits this one perfectly. I really like the choice of color on this since it makes the car look very aggressive. Now if they will just do something with thaat engine.

This new MX-5 Miata is indeed a special one. I really like the upgrades on the exterior and interior designs. But I think the power do not matched its style. It would be better if they add some power on this one.

Hmm, I am not really all that found of the MX-5, but I would say that this one actually looks rather gorgeous. I really love that green color that they did on this one, really makes it stand out more.
