Shortly after Mazda->ke53 unveiled the new generation Mazda3, the first teaser image surfaced online revealing what appears to be the sedan variant. If this teaser image is indeed real, we should expect to see the official details on the Mazda3->ke504 sedan very soon.

The sedan version will look identical to the hatchback version, except, of course, the trunk on the backside. Up front, the sedan version features the same design language, which is inspired by the Mazda6->ke346 sedan. It will feature a prominent black grille, more aggressive headlamps and a ready-to-pounce stance. Expect to see the same active grille shutters mounted in front of the radiator that automatically open and close in accordance with driving conditions to improve aerodynamic performance.

Drivetrain

For the U.S. market, the new Mazda3 sedan is offered with the same engine lineup as the hatchback. This lineup includes a SKYACTIV-G 2.0-liter gasoline engine with 155 horsepower and a new SKYACTIV-G 2.5-liter gasoline engine with 184 horsepower. They can be combined with a standard SKYACTIV-MT six-speed manual transmission, while a SKYACTIV-Drive six-speed automatic transmissions is offered as an alternative.

Both engines will be offered with an i-ELOOP brake energy regeneration system, which employs a capacitor to store electricity generated when the vehicle decelerates.

2.0-liter-equipped Mazda3 sedans deliver 29 mpg in the city and 41 mpg on the highway with a manual transmission. When fitted with the automatic transmission, the 2.0-liter-equipped Mazda3 sedan is rated at 30 mpg city and 41 mpg highway with an automatic transmission. When fitted with the 2.5-liter engine, the Mazda3 is rated 28 mpg city and 39 mpg highway, but with the addition of i-ELOOP, the mileage jumps to 29 mpg city and 40 mpg highway.
