With a history that began in 1989, the Mazda MX-5 is one of the best sold convertibles on the market. In its 21 years of history, the MX-5 saw three different generations, numerous design updates, and even more engine changes. However, the most impressive update has been announced for the fourth generation that is set to be launched in 2012.

The Mazda MX-5 will remain a rear-wheel drive compact sports coupe with exterior design inspired by the Shinari Concept unveiled earlier this year. With the new generation, Mazda will focus on reducing the total weight to less than 1,000 kilos.

At the launch of the Shinari concept, Ikuo Maeda, general manager of Mazda Motor Corp.’s design division said: "this design will lead to the next generation of Mazda design and will lead to other elements." Guess the MX-5 will be among the first to adopt Mazda’s new "Kodo - Soul of Motion" design language.

Update 4/17/2014: The 2015 MX-5’s chassis and engine debuted at the 2014 New York International Auto Show, and its lightweight construction will help drop 220 pounds from the MX-5’s weight. See more after the jump.

In 25 years, the Mazda MX-5 Miata has become a cult icon and entered the Guinness Book of World Records as the best-selling, two-seat, open-top sports car . But that is old news, and we are here to show you just what Mazda plans to do in celebration of the Miata’s 25th year in existence. The automaker is launching a 25th Anniversary Edition at the New York Auto Show to show buyers just how important the roadster is to Mazda.

This special-edition MX-5 Miata is based on the power retractable hard top (PRHT) version of the car, giving this drop-top a nice and quiet cabin when the top is up — I noted this in my recent test drive of the Club version . The 25th Anniversary Edition will be exclusively available in Soul Red Metallic — a proper color for the iconic sports car — with contrasting black mirrors, A-pillars and top. On the inside, the special model gets off-white leather seating and door trim, and a hand-finished decorative panel.

Under the hood, things will remain the same, as it will feature the 2.0-liter, four-cylinder mill that cranks out 167 horsepower and 140 pound-feet of torque when mated to the standard six-cog manual. You can also opt for the six-speed auto transmission, but that results in 11 fewer ponies under the hood. This special MX-5 also gets the added benefit of Bilstein dampers to keep it glued to the road in the twist.

Unfortunately, there are no real modifications to this car other than the exclusive colors inside and out, the hand-worked decorative panel and badges, but it is still a nice send-off for the NC-generation MX-5.

The Mazda3 has been roaming the roadways since it replaced the Protégé in 2004, and despite a "second generation" in 2010, the design remained nearly the same throughout its lifespan. When Mazda announced its Kodo design language would make its way to the 3 in the 2014 model year, I couldn’t help but get excited, as the Mazda6 looked awesome in its new dress. Well, after I drove the Mazda6 , I called up my fleet supplier and specifically requested the Mazda3. They contacted Mazda, and they happily shipped one out to me.

The new Mazda3 was a stunner from the second it rolled into my driveway, I loved the Meteor Gray Mica paint draped over the revised body. Walking up to the car, it looked like a much more expensive car, and sliding into the cabin really kicked thing up a notch.

On the surface, my love for the revised Mazda3 only grew, but did I still love it after a week behind the wheel?

The Mazda2 has been largely an afterthought in the Mazda lineup but at the Geneva Motor Show , the Japanese automaker’s resident hatchback will get its much deserved time in the spotlight.

Good for the Mazda2 because it has really earned the right to get a concept vehicle to preview what the next-generation model will look like. As far as the name of the concept goes, Mazda has christened it the "Hazumi," which apparently means "spring up" or "bound" in Japanese.

While we have no clue on the significance of its meaning to the Mazda 2, we do know that the change is long overdue, especially with that all-too-happy look of its predecessor. In its place, it appears that Mazda will adopt the new styling language seen on the Mazda 3 and Mazda 6 . What that means is that we expect to see the same angular headlights that the teaser proudly shows, as well as a more contoured grille and a sculpted signature wing. LEDs are also in play for the Mazda2.

On the more technical side, the new Mazda2 is also being prepared to use a shorter version of the CX-5 ’s platform, which means that we can reasonably expect a slightly bigger frame than what we’ve come accustomed to.

All that is good news for Mazda’s forlorn hatch. It’s forsaken no more, folks, so get excited for that!

According to new from Autoweek, it appears Mazda has a new RX-7 in the works with plans to power it with the famous Wankel-type rotary engine. Although it’s not fully signed off on yet, the Japanese automaker is working on the preliminary designs as you read this.

The overall design seems to hinge on one major aspect: lightweight. It is said the new RX-7 will share its platform and underpinnings with the all-new MX-5 set to debut at next year’s Chicago Auto Show. With a targeted curb weight of only 2,400 pounds, the MX-5 will be a featherweight. Comparatively, the RX-7 is said to be slightly larger, yet only weighing 2,800 pounds.

Rumors surrounding the powertrain reveal some uncertainty within Mazda’s engineering department. It’s unclear if a twin- or triple-rotor setup will be used, but according to one source, it’s likely to remain a twin-rotor setup. Displacement is said to be roughly 600cc per rotor, making the twin-rotor design a 1.2-liter engine. Targeted output levels are said to be 250 horsepower.

It appears Mazda has penciled the RX-7 for a 2015 or 2016 launch date with an expected price of around $30,000. That price lands the RX-7 smack between the more expensive Porsche Cayman and the less expensive Subaru BRZ /Scion FR-S twins.

An interesting tid-bit of notoriety: Mazda’s chief designer is Ikuo Maeda, the son of the original RX-7’s designer. Though his family blood runs through the car, he says it will not be a retro design, nor will it feature too many of Mazda’s current design language.

The answer is always Miata . It seems like a tired internet cliche, but anyone who has ever driven one of the fun little Japanese roadsters understands the truth behind the statement. With tidy dimensions, great handling and just enough power to be fun, the Miata is in a class all by itself in the world.

2014 marks the 25th anniversary of the MX-5 and Mazda has released a nice little tribute video. I could literally spend hours and hours discussing the joy and fun that comes from piloting the MX-5, but I am not sure the site has the bandwidth to support the amount of words I would write.

Instead, we leave you with the video presented here. Yes it is subtitled, but the message presented within is one that everyone here at TopSpeed can relate to.

Congratulations, Mazda, on 25 years of excellence. May you continue to have this level of success for the next 25.

The Miata never gets its fair share of press these days, but with the model celebrating its 25th anniversary — yeah, it’s 25 years old, folks — it is getting all the press it can handle. Even the big-boys, like Jay Leno, are getting in on the open-top celebration.

Jay, who owns a supercharged, first-gen MX-5 Miata, spoke with the two men responsible for this glorious sports car , Bob Hall and Kenichi Yamamoto, and discussed the progression of the Miata project, which officially started back in 1982.

What was great about this interview is that the two creators did not just talk about the final product. They dug deep and pulled up all of the old and juicy details about the project. One such detail was the fact that the Miata actually had a one-in-three chance of being either a front-wheel-drive or a mid-engine car. Fortunately, the rear-wheel-drive design by Hall and Yamamoto won over the folks in Japan, and the rest is history.

There’s nothing like special-edition MX-5 s, but in the U.S., we so rarely get a crack at them. Another non-U.S.-bound, special-edition MX-5 is this Sport Venture model — this model will also be available on Mazda5 and Mazda2 .

The Mazda MX-5 Sport Venture starts off with your choice of two all-new colors — Titanium Flash and Chrystal Blue Mica — bright-silver mirrors, bright alloy wheels and exterior badges.

On the inside, this special model gets a high-performance navigation system with a 6.1-inch display screen and Bluetooth connectivity to help set it apart from the rest of the MX-5 lineup. It also includes a stone leather interior with heated sport seats.

Under the hood, the MX-5 Sport Venture is available with a 1.8-liter four-pot with 126 PS (124 horsepower) in its soft-top and hard-top variants, or an optional 2.0-liter four-cylinder with 160 PS (158 horsepower) in the hard-top model. Sure, that’s not a ton of power, but the MX-5 never has been about raw power.

The price for this special-edition MX-5 starts at £18,995 ($31,170 at the current exchange rates).

The Mazda MX-5 Miata is really one of the more polarizing roadsters available today. Those who are fans of it — myself included — rave about its handling, power-to-weight ratio, analog feel and balance on the track. Those who hate it argue that it looks like a "chick’s car," isn’t fast enough, too loud and never has all of the cool features found in modern cars.

Well, Mazda has — for the most part — ignored all of the MX-5 haters and focused on what the MX-5 lovers desire from the Japanese roadster. When Mazda redesigned the MX-5 in 2006, it listened to enthusiasts by adding in a Club Spec model that eliminated all of the higher-end features and replaced them with performance goodies, like Billstein struts, a strut tower brace and upgraded tires. Well, Mazda was gracious enough to bestow upon me a 2014 MX-5 Club for a week, and as a Miataphile, I was more than thrilled to get a crack at a new model.

I personally own a modified 2004 Mazdaspeed MX-5 that pumps out about 225 to 250 horsepower, so I had a good base to go off of for this review. Some of you may think that since my daily driver is a modded MX-5 that I may not find the new Club model all that thrilling, but you would be absolutely incorrect.

Diesel-powered cars are gaining ground in the United States lately with both Volkswagen and Audi introducing new models into the market. Mazda is looking to join the fray of consumer diesel model with its Mazda6 sedan.

If the idea of parking an oil-burning "zoom zoom" sedan in your garage sounds great you need to put on your hat of patience. Mazda has just announced that the Skyactiv-D equipped Mazda6 has been delayed.

The car has not been delayed due to emissions testing, rather Mazda feels the car doesn’t have quite the right driving dynamic. In its own words words the diesel Mazda6 needs to be tweaked to provide "the right balance between fuel-economy and Mazda-appropriate driving performance."

While it makes us a little sad that Mazda has delayed the introduction of this engine to the US market again, we can’t help but appreciate the desire to deliver the best-driving product they can.

With how much the gasoline-powered 2014 Mazda6 impressed us, it’s no surprise that Mazda is refusing to deliver a sub-par product.
