I’ve discussed before how every car in the Flyin’ Miata fleet has a special character. Each car is designed and created to show off a certain characteristic or modification. Nancy demonstrates just how the great the Miata the can be with a bit more power and a little suspension love, while Atomic Betty represents the pinnacle of a Grand Touring style roadster. And then we have Elvis.

Elvis is similar to Atomic Betty in that it is a V-8 conversion Miata, but Elvis is an NB-generation car, and it was the first V-8 car that FM converted. While Betty is a comfortable cruiser that just happens to have incredible power and immense speed; Elvis is a bit rougher, a little more raw, and he is all the better for it.

With a more horsepower thanks to a different engine cam, the smaller size and weight that comes with the older generation cars, and the inherently less rigid NB chassis, Elvis has a feel that is all his own.

Do all these differences make Elvis and inferior machine to the mighty Betty, or is he great just the way he is? We spent some serious time behind the wheel to figure it out.

Mazda is now confirming details on its upcoming launch of the all-new 2016 MX-5 Miata . The event is set to take place in Monterey, California on Wednesday, September 3, 2014. It will in fact be a global launch with simultaneous debuts in Tokyo and Barcelona. Coverage will also be viewable live on Mazda’s YouTube channel.

Besides the new MX-5 getting the spotlight, 1980s rock band Duran Duran will headline the event, singing plenty of their classic hits. “Duran Duran and the MX-5 Miata both made their world debuts in the 1980s and captured the hearts and imagination of an entire generation,” says Russell Wager, vice president of marketing for Mazda North American Operations. “In 25 years, both the car and the band have evolved while staying true to their roots.”

This is a special time for the MX-5 Miata, as it celebrated its 25th anniversary on February 10, 2014 and will soon break the one millionth unit sold. As of this writing, Mazda quotes that it’s sold over 930,000 Miatas globally since its debut back in 1989.

The details about the new Miata are still unknown, but that won’t last for long. Its debut is scheduled for 6:00 p.m. PDT.

Mazda is throwing a second party for the MX-5 in partnership with Fashion Rocks. The event will be broadcast live on CBS on Tuesday, September 9 at 9:00 p.m. ET. Fashion Rocks will be hosted by Ryan Seacrest at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York. The two-hour event will celebrate the close relationship between fashion and music.

As the redesigned, 2016 Mazda MX-5 Miata is being prepared for its unveiling on September 3rd, the rumormill is brimming with unofficial information ranging from the massive design changes to the displacement of the SkyActive engine under the hood. More recently though, yet another rumor emerged, this time claiming the fourth-generation MX-5 Miata will spawn a coupe . That’s the word coming from Automotive News, who does not list a source, which is why we advise you take this report with a massive grain of salt.

The Miata coupe is supposedly scheduled to arrive "roughly a year" after the soft-top goes on sale. If this report proves to be accurate, the coupe will go on sale in mid-2016 following a late 2015 launch. The report goes on to say that the Miata coupe will be more than just a similarly shaped, hard-top MX-5. According to Auto News, Mazda is working on a unique, fastback-style body. My best guess is Mazda could adopt the same styling solution seen on the BMW Z4 Coupe . If the Japanese will indeed build such a thing, that is.

Flyin’ Miata has this incredible ability to create unique and wonderful cars from the Miata . Nancy the supercharged NC is a sprightly car that is set for rally racing, Atomic Betty is a world class GT car and the Exocet is a track-day phenom. These are all shop cars, however, and are set up to portray a certain style and characteristic.

But what would an employee of Flyin’ Miata do to their own car. With no need to highlight a certain part or feature, and no need to cater to the desires of a customer, what would they create. If you are Keith Tanner, you create the Turbo Smurf.

This 1990 Miata has been fettled, upgraded and altered in essentially every manner to become what is Keith’s ideal daily driver. From the drivetrain and suspension to the interior and even the sound insulation, there is almost no part of this roadster that has been left untouched.

Are the results a carefully created car that coddles as well as it excites? Or did Keith just create a Frankenstein of speed and noise that only just manages to ferry him to the shop without killing him? I spent some time behind the driver seat to figure it out.

Automakers these days are hitting the big 100-year mark left and right, and Mazda is no exception. With its big date coming in 2020, plans are already underway to create a supercar worthy of celebrating the company’s centenary. Rumblings from within the company point to a halo vehicle that brings notoriety and prestige to the brand. Likely called the RX-9 , the car hasn’t been confirmed yet, but Yasuhiro Aoyama, Mazda’s General Manager of Global Sales and Marketing, smiled knowingly when asked about it by Motoring.com.au

Adding to the hype is the 2020 Olympics set to take place in Tokyo, helping shine the world spotlight on all things Japanese, Aoyama mentioned.

While 2020 is more than five years away, Mazda may be planning a revival of the rotary engine in the mean time. Combine the fact the automaker has already renewed the trademark on the RX-7 nameplate and the 50-year anniversary of the Cosmo rotary-engined sports car is happening in 2017, and things begin to look promising for Mazda’s sporting future.

"This is a very fantastic idea, 2017, [for] a new rotary," said Aoyama. “Fascinating,” as he grinned with the Motoring.com.au reporter. Though he refused to confirm anything, the possibility of the RX-7 and RX-9 seem more real.

All this is possible, thanks to Mazda’s record profits for the last Japanese fiscal year, topping $1.41 billion. With some extra cash in its pockets, Mazda has the resources to invest in new, high-stakes projects.

When it comes to track-day toys, there is no shortage of companies vying for your money. Lots of companies like Caterham make Lotus Seven clones, the Ariel Atom provides good looks and brutal performance and the KTM X-Bow puts motorcycle acceleration into a four-wheel package. But what if instead of making an all-new car and then fitting it with a hodge podge collection of parts, you took a car that was already great and just gave it an ultra-light track-toy body?This is the Exocet from Exomotive.

For all intents and purposes it is merely a Mazda Miata that has gone on a 1,000-pound diet. It has the same wheelbase, weight balance and seating position as the world’s favorite roadster, but thanks to a tube frame chassis it weighs less than a pair of large motorcycles. You still keep that same Miata handling and reliability, you just get a lot more speed and grip.

To put it another way, it’s F@#%&*@ epic.

Launched in 2012 for the 2013 model year, the Mazda CX-5 is one of the newest crossovers on the market. Sharing its platform with the smaller Mazda3 and Mazda6 sedans, the CX-5 was Mazda’s first vehicle featuring the new KODO design language and the company’s SkyActiv technology. Available in North America since 2013, the U.S.-spec CX-5 is offered with two engines. The base, 2.0-liter, four-cylinder generates 155 horsepower and 150 pound-feet of torque, while the 2.5-liter, four-banger is rated 184 ponies and 185 pound-feet. A six-speed autobox comes standard on three of four trims, while the FWD entry-level model is equipped with a six-speed manual. In Europe, Mazda is also selling a diesel version, powered by a 2.2-liter, inline-four that delivers as much as 173 horsepower and 310 pound-feet of torque. Coming into 2015, roughly three years since its debut, the Mazda CX-5 is received its first mid-cycle facelift.

Although the CX-5 is far from being old and still enjoys great success in the U.S. market, the Japanese automaker decided some nips and tucks are necessary in order for the crossover to keep up with its competitors. Changes are anything but wild, but customers will enjoy a couple of significant exterior updates.

With a history that began in 1989, the Mazda MX-5 is one of the best-sold convertibles on the market. In its 21 years of history, the MX-5 saw three different generations, numerous design updates, and even more engine changes. However, the most impressive update has been announced for the fourth generation that is set to debut on September 3rd, 2014.

The Mazda MX-5 will remain a rear-wheel drive compact sports coupe with exterior design inspired by the Shinari Concept unveiled earlier this year. With the new generation, Mazda will focus on reducing the total weight to less than 1,000 kilos.

At the launch of the Shinari concept, Ikuo Maeda, general manager of Mazda Motor Corp.’s design division said: "this design will lead to the next generation of Mazda design and will lead to other elements." Guess the MX-5 will be among the first to adopt Mazda’s new "Kodo - Soul of Motion" design language.

Updated 08/11/2014: Mazda unveiled the first teaser image of the next MX-5 Miata before the car’s official debut on September 3. According to the first details offered by Mazda, the next MX-5 will "look nothing like" the current generation and will adopt an evolution of the current Kodo design language. What happens when you take the stiffest and most refined Miata ever built, and then have Flyin’ Miata cram a fire-breathing small block V-8 under the hood? You get one of the best cars I have ever driven. Period.

This is Atomic Betty and she has stolen my heart.

With more than 400 horsepower and an equal measure of torque, Atomic Betty takes the power and thrust of a Corvette , and cuts a few hundred pounds. The results are staggering to say the least. Despite the insertion of the large engine, very little of Betty has been altered, and from the exterior she looks like a stock NC Miata to 99-percent of onlookers. If you prefer the idea of a “sleeper,” Betty is about the best you can get.

Best of all, the weight balance has barely been changed and overall weight gain from the new engine is less than putting a full-size male in the passenger seat. That means that same handling and crispness of the Miata remains, there just happens to be almost three-times as much power at the call of your right foot.

Hell. Yes.

When I was a child, my only real experience with the idea of summer camp was watching Salute Your Shorts on Nickelodeon. I was always active and outside, I just never went to an actual camp. Now that I am an adult who is staring at 30, the idea of going to summer camp sounds even more laughable. At least, it did until I got a quick message from Flyin’ Miata asking me if I wanted to come out for its annual Summer Camp.

This isn’t a s’mores, campfires and Kumbaya style of summer camp. Rather, it would be a several days of epic drives, track time, food and friends, all wrapped up with the lovely veneer of driving in a roadster.

Within hours of the invitation I was trying to arrange flights.

Upon my arrival in the great state of Colorado my time as a FM Summer Camp attendee began. From my blast up Pikes Peaks in the supercharged NC, Nancy, to a welcoming party, two full track days, several information seminars and the awards dinner, the next few days were packed with fun, friendship and long-lasting memories. The heat was a bit intense though, and as you can see by the photo, it made me do some really weird things.
