In the world of automotive journalism, it can be difficult to really love a car. We sit behind computers, making assumptions on new products that we have yet to drive. It’s easy to love a car or hate a car from a chair, but will we feel the same way when we actually get a go? This was our dilemma with the Mazda 2. We have been praising this little car for its quirky looks ever since it debuted in 2007. We were as excited as a child with a new toy for the chance to get to take one out on the road for the first time. The Mazda will be hitting showrooms soon, but it wasn’t that long ago when the future of this machine was still up in the air. We hoped and prayed that we would finally get a good small car. So, does the little Mazda fulfill our every desire? At first glance the Mazda seems to have kept its slender figure. Where as most cars gain weight when they make the trip to the U.S – as do most humans – the Mazda2 has kept its figure. Sure, there are larger reinforcements to help the car pass U.S safety standards, but, all in all, this is the same machine we saw during its debut. Hit the jump to continue reading. Full story . New Details On The Next-Generation Mazda MX-5
We have some new details for you on the new next-generation Mazda MX-5. This will be the last car – except for the new 5 - to carry the Nagare design language and it should hit dealers around 2012. The current MX-5 has gained a bit of weight since its creation in 1989, but Mazda is putting the sports car on a diet. The company’s engineers are worried that the MX-5 is getting a tad too fat, so they will focus on reducing the car’s weight for the next-generation model. Mazda has set a target weight of 2,200 pounds for the next MX-5. That is roughly 300 pounds off of the current car’s weight. The car will also drop the 2.0-liter motor in favor of a 1.6-liter and an optional 1.8-liter. The standard gearbox will be a six-speed manual, but buyers who don’t want to use this car to it’s full potential can get a dual-clutch semi-automatic. We aren’t sure if a hardtop version will be available, but there will most likely be one. We can’t wait. From A Boy To A Man: The 2010 Mazda6
There are cars out there that come out and you know, right off the bat, they are going to be the golden child. Then there are cars that are produced and people shrug their shoulders and say, "That’s average." Those "average" cars have to work hard and strive to become the automotive men that everyone vehicle hopes to be. The 2010 Mazda6 fits into the average category. The 6 started out as a nothing, a lowborn family sedan that came from the same platform as the rest of the sedans created by Ford’s legion of minions. After years of hard work things have begun to look up. How things have changed for the 6. No longer a nobody, the midsize Mazda has grown up and moved away. Ford has cut its stake in Mazda to 13% and my, what it has done. This is no reflection on Ford, they make fantastic cars, but now that Mazda is free to create and produce what they please, the 6 has become a man. The base model Mazda6 is nicely equipped with loads of power stuff and standard stability control; pretty much the usual things you’ll find on most midsize sedans. The price is even highly competitive at $19,220. Who wants base though, it’s like settling for second best. We chose the i Grand Touring, a seemingly luxury sedan with so many different options on it that it would take a while to describe them all. Hope you have time to spare. Our Mazda6 came with proximity-sensing keyless entry and push-button start; 17-inch alloy wheels; rain-sensing windshield wipers; auto-dimming heated outside mirrors with "puddle" lights; automatic Xenon headlights and LED taillights; leather upholstery; and a blind-spot monitoring system. Add the optional moon roof/navigation/Bose audio package and tax and title and you’re looking at one pricey ride. It’s Mazda’s version of a Lexus, without the dull looks. We first heard about the CX-5 back in 2008 when Mazda began discussing its plans to expand their line and create a more well-rounded line-up. Two years later and those plans are finally being put to work as AutoCar reports that the new CX-5 is just about ready to be launched. The new CX-5 is being designed after the Kazamai Concept that was unveiled at the Moscow Motor Show in 2008. The concept looked like a cross between a sports car and an SUV and highlighted the direction Mazda was taking when producing their next small compact crossover. Straight out of Star Trek, the Kazamai Concept’s design language was all, but ordinary. Not only will the Mazda CX-5 boast an extravagant design concept, but it will also be doing its part for the environment, being the first production Mazda to be powered by the Sky engine. The SKY-G engine is a next-generation direct injection gasoline engine with greatly improved fuel economy and output due to enhanced thermal efficiency. The engine will work with i-stop, regenerative braking, and lighter vehicles to provide the owner with a 30-percent increase in fuel economy. The Mazda CX-5 will be at least 100kg lighter than its competitors. Mazda will also be shadowing the new Land Rover Evoque by creating both three- and five-door versions. The midsize sedan offers practicality without the reputation crushing style of a minivan. At least, that’s what they want you to think. Some people buy them as family cars, opting for more room over a compact sedan, without sacrificing small car handling and fuel economy. Other people like a bigger car over a smaller one and then there’s people who prefer the Honda Accord to the Civic because it has a bigger presence on the road. Mazda prepares turbocharged successor for RX-7
If rumors are to be trusted then Mazda may be unveiling a successor for the RX-7 sports car in 2013. Inside sources have told Autocar that the car will be called the RX-9 and will retain the rotary Renesis technology employed by its predecessors and the RX-8. With the next RX-7, Mazda will focus on improving fuel consumption and torque required to keep pace with rivals like the VW Scirocco. A Mazda source said: "We’re testing the rotary in conjunction with technologies including an electric turbocharger." The next generation RX-7 will be powered by Mazda’s all new Renesis 16X power plant which debuted at the 2007 Tokyo Auto Show inside of the Taiki concept car. The Renesis(2) rotary engine is a 1.6 Liter twin rotor motor that will develop a maximum output of 350 HP and 215 lb-ft of torque. The RX-9’s design language will be inspired by the Nagare design language, which is inspired by nature — in particular, wind and flowing water. Top Ten Small Cars for under $20K
