2011 - 2013 McLaren MP4-12C

Any fan of supercars remembers the mighty F1 from McLaren . With its BMW sourced V12, center seat driving position and gold lined engine cover the car was truly exotic. It held many records and for longer than most other machines are able to. It shot the company right to the top of the automotive stratosphere and helped them grow into a healthy and sustainable racing company. Several years ago McLaren spent a reported 300 billion pounds to design and build the McLaren Technology Center meant to encompass all aspects of the company. That was finished back in 2003, so what have they been up to in Woking, England for the past 7 years? Quite simply they have been designing the next and possibly most formidable challenger to the Ferrari 458 Italia .

Engineers and designers at McLaren are currently developing several new and highly innovative sports cars to bring to the global market. The MP 4-12C is now in production signaling the beginning of the rebirth of a company that has not had a distinct production vehicle for over a decade. Its stunning performance and efficiency have caught the eyes of the automotive press since McLaren first began testing mules at their facility and now we get to see it in final form.

UPDATE 06/07/2012: McLaren has officially confirmed that, for the 2013 model year, the MP4-12C will come with an additional 25 HP, an Innovative Intake Sound Generator (ISG), and more color and leather finish options. Also, existing 12C owners will be offered complimentary upgrades to the latest specifications. Check out the full 2013 additions after the jump!

History

McLaren MP4-12C

McLaren automotive is the second oldest Formula 1 racing team in existence behind Ferrari. With that being said it would make sense that the company knows a thing or two about building powerful machines and winning races. The team operates under the name Vodafone McLaren Mercedes and has 169 individual race wins under its belt. The company has been known as an innovator since its inception and carbon-fiber products have been their claim to fame.

This year the F1 team will be competing in the company’s 200th carbon fiber monocoque chassis. Other road-going vehicles have been designed with a heavy use of carbon-fiber composite material. In 1993 the F1 debuted as the first car to utilize a carbon chassis. The legendary F1 also competed in F1 races, winning its first ever 24 hours of Le Mans race. McLaren has had a long running partnership with Mercedes that led to the German company receiving carbon-fiber expertise from McLaren for its SLR model. In a seven year long production run, the Mercedes-McLaren SLR has over 2,000 individual examples on the road making it the most successful car in history with a carbon chassis.

With the successful completion of the design phase for the 12C, McLaren is poised to re-introduce itself to the automotive marketplace. The McLaren Group and McLaren Automotive have over 1,500 employees, many of who work in the Woking, England headquarters.

McLaren Facilities

McLaren MP4-12C

Perhaps the most exciting moment up until the release of the 12C was in May of 2004 when Queen Elizabeth II opened the McLaren Technology Center (MTC). The new headquarters of McLaren Automotive and all its subsidiaries sits on a half-million square meter site and reportedly cost 300 million pounds, making it the largest privately funded construction project in Europe at the time. Having a complete facility for the company to be able to design, develop and produce their vehicles under one roof is critical throughout every phase at McLaren.

This year will be another milestone at the site when the McLaren Production Center (MPC) is completed. With the introduction of the 12C it was clear that the production side of the company needed to grow, but still be linked to headquarters. The new 40 million pound site is capable of producing roughly 1,000 12C’s per year.

McLaren MP4-12C

Engineers and other employees will be able to reach the new MPC by an underground tunnel. The building features several zones from general assembly, paint facility, test areas, and it can all be viewed from a balcony at the end. When the original headquarters was built it featured several products that made it more environmentally conscious than any other manufacturer in the world. This 32,000 square-meter building is no different and attempts to leave as little an impact as possible on the surrounding wildlife. Its rectangular shape and extensive use of aluminum will match that of the Technology Center. The MTC uses the large lake that also completes its circular shape for cooling. The roof of the new MPC will help to make this system a full loop by collecting rainwater in order to replenish evaporation loss from the lake. These low-energy use systems help McLaren run a very green operation and further compliment the company’s vision of creating powerful, but efficient vehicles.

Design Updates for the 2013 Model Year

McLaren MP4-12C

One of the most common complaints when it came to the Mp4-12C was its doors. So, for the 2103 model year, McLaren has mounted a small button on each door, replacing the previous touch sensor system. The company hopes that this addition will simplify the user’s experience.

The new MP4-12C will also come with a new safety system. If the driver selects ‘AUTO-lights’ mode, the supercar’s lights will automatically switch on when rain is detected by the windshield-mounted rain sensor. The Climate Control System will also be modified, as it will get a new "AUTO LO" functionality that enables the desired cabin temperature to be reached in the quietest way possible, using lower fan speeds.

Also for the 2013 model year, McLaren will be adding a new Volcano Yellow exterior paint finish next to the very successful Volcano Orange and Volcano Red. As an option, customers can receive a Vehicle Lift system which allows the 12C to be raised up to 40mm at the front and 25mm at the rear for improved ground clearance. On the interior, the steering wheel has received a new 5-spoke design which can be ordered in multiple finishes: Standard Silver, optional Stealth, and eye-catching Diamond Cut. McLaren is also offering new interior trims that add semi-aniline leather to all major interior surfaces including doors, seats, the dash, and the center console.

Starting June 2012, customers can also get:

  • Full Semi-Aniline Leather: Carbon Black Leather on all surfaces, along with optional color-matched flat piping
  • Semi-Aniline Leather with Color Perforated Inserts: As Full Semi-Aniline, with the addition of color perforated door inserts, seat inserts and matching piping
  • Semi-Aniline Leather with Alcantara Inserts: Carbon Black Leather to all major surfaces, with black Alcantara seat inserts and optional Alcantara door inserts, along with optional color-matched flat piping

Development and Testing

McLaren MP4-12C

The level of dedication to this project shines through when discussing its origins as “Project 11” that started in 2005. Inside of a secure room as the technology Center is perhaps the most advanced simulation software in the world. McLaren can use this virtual environment to test cars ability at any track and any conditions. These systems can allow year round testing when facilities such as the Nordschleife are closed due to inclement weather.

In conjunction with the simulation programs – real world testing is completed and fed back into the system as raw data. 2007 saw the first mules used in testing which helped the McLaren team initially test aerodynamics, powertrain and drivetrain parameters. More complete Production Prototypes Prototypes are used later in the process to fine-tune the car and complete high-mileage tests. McLaren tests every car thoroughly by taking at least on of the 50 mule vehicles built to every market in which the car will be sold.

McLaren MP4-12C

The raw data that these test vehicles produce is collected by a special system created by McLaren for its F1 racing team. The high-speed data logger had to have its capabilities enhanced in order to handle the information coming from 20-ECU systems on the 12C. The data is collected from 100 different pressure transducers, lasers, acceleromoters, displacement sensors, thermocouples, strain gauges and GPS systems. This information can be placed back into the simulation software in near real-time making the development cycle faster and more efficient.

Performance

McLaren MP4-12C

With the continued success in F1, it makes sense that McLaren would transplant its knowledge from the track to the road. This was seen when the car debuted at the Goodwood Festival of Speed in England and the Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance for North America. At the time, performance figures given by McLaren were simply numbers and had no real world testing outside of their engineers to back them up.

2011 and 2012 Specifications

The M838T engine was designed specifically for the 12C and has several unique features. It is a 3.8-liter twin-turbo V8 weighing only 439 lbs. The engine produced 592hp @7,000rpm and 443 lb-ft. of torque between 3,000 and 7,000rpm for the 2011 and 2012 model years. With the use of the company’s carbon-fiber structure and other lightweight components, such as an optional exhaust made from Inconel, the car achieves a stellar power-to-weight ratio of 455bhp/tonne. It’s a simple racing that low weight and high power are key ingredients to speed. The 12C will reach 60mph in 3.3 seconds and an even faster 3.1 seconds with the optional high-performance tire option. As this car will undoubtedly be compared to the McLaren F1 of the past, the new team made sure the top speed of the 12C would be formidable topping out at 205mph.

UPDATE 10/24/2011: McLaren MP4-12C has recently reported a Nurburgring lap time of 7:28 at the hands of Horst von Saurma, Editor-in-Chief of Sport Auto. This puts the MP4-12C one notch above the Ferrari 458 Italia (7:38), but falling short of the Porsche GT2 RS and Lexus LF-A Nurburgring Package . With the McLaren MP4-12C sporting a 3.8-liter twin-turbo V8 producing 592hp @ 7,000rpm and 443 lb-ft. of torque between 3,000 and 7,000rpm, we’re thinking a redo is in order.

McLaren MP4-12C

A dual-clutch transmission is the only setup available and features 7-speeds and multiple settings. Choosing between Normal, Track, and Sport modes will modify how the transmission selects gears. A unique Pre-Cog feature loads the clutch before a shift is made lowering shift times to virtually zero. The transmission is also capable of some electronic wizardry. Shift paddle son the steering wheel have the ability to be “clicked” for fast shift or held fully depressed for a new feature. IF you depress the paddle through a corner, the transmission will select the correct gear to exit the corner in by matching the revs more accurately than most drivers would be able to. For those driving this car in a more urban setting may find the Automatic and winter modes for the transmission helpful as well.
The idea of a no compromise sports car was carried through to the design of the suspension. McLaren calls it ProActive Chassis Control with Adaptive Damping. It is essentially a double-wishbone setup with coil springs at all four corners. An innovative feature is the adjustable roll control that makes mechanical anti-roll bars obsolete. The suspension can be tuned by the driver with the touch of a button much like the transmission. The modes are the same and they manage the damping and stability control settings depending on road and track conditions.

McLaren MP4-12C

All of these systems help the 12C go fast in a straight line or around a track, but McLaren has not neglected to the other side of the equation, braking. In the late 1990’s McLaren introduced a Brake Steer function on its Formula 1 MP4-12. The system was later banned by racing, but was further developed by McLaren for its road cars. During cornering the system applies the brakes to the inside rear-wheel in order to help the car turn faster. This can help a driver that has entered a corner incorrectly or a professional looking for the fastest line. To stop the tendency for understeer, the system is able to assess steering angle and calculate the necessary braking needed to correct the cars direction and increase the yaw rate.
McLaren has also incorporated an airbrake to the 12C providing downforce and faster braking times. When the car is traveling fast and the driver brakes hard a hydraulic system lifts the brake to 32-degrees. Forces from the wind rushing over the panel force it to a higher 69-degrees helping the system to be both effective and lightweight.

2013 Model Year Updates

For the 2013 Model Year, all MP4-12C owners will get:

  • M838T engine power increased to 625PS (616 HP)
  • Revised calibration for 7-Speed SSG transmission
  • Programmable Intake Sound Generator
  • Headlights linked to rain sensor when in automatic mode
  • Easy-Exit electric seat function incorporating Seat Return (if specified)
  • New Meridian audio equaliser settings (if specified)

The extra power was obtained by a redesigned engine mapping, a measure that according to McLaren has not altered the remarkable efficiency of the M838T engine, with 12C CO2 emissions remaining at just 279 g/km, and fuel economy recorded at 24.2 mpg. The 7-Speed SSG transmission has also been modified so it now offers crisper throttle response and improved clutch control for gear changes that are both faster and smoother.

Pricing

McLaren MP4-12C

The McLaren MP4-12C went on sale in Europe first, in late Spring 2011. The North American sales began in the summer and wrapped up for the Asia-Pacific markets at the end of 2011. McLaren has 31 dealers appointed to sell the car in 19 different countries and prices started at $229,000.

Competition

McLaren MP4-12C

McLaren has been careful in the way it positioned the 12C within the market. It gave it supercar capabilities and technology, but has kept the price towards other manufacturers entry-level models. Calling a Ferrari 458 Ferrari 458 Italia somewhat of an entry-level model may sound like blasphemy, but with the 599, 612 and Enzo supercars positioned above it that is basically what it has become. McLaren clearly has the beautiful new Ferrari in its sights and the performance figures match up quite nicely. The Ferrari Ferrari uses a V8 and 7-speed transmission much like the 12C and the 0-60mph times are within a tenth of a second. Seeing these two models square off on a track would be the ultimate test between F1 powerhouse companies who have thrown all of there technology and considerable know-how into road going machines.

The technology of this Mclaren is the most interesting feature of this sports vehicle and good thing as well that they prove the fact that this one is a sports car. However, I still find out that there are more powerful sports car out there than on this.

You’d think something that expensive would look a little better/more interesting. Personally, I’d just get a Gallardo Valentino Balboni and blow the rest of my cash on some other toy(s).

This vehicle is really noticeable because on it, unique and aggressive platform. However, I wonder if why didn’t use a V12 engine on it instead of V8 only? Well, there are absolutely more powerful vehicles than on this.

This vehicle is really oozing with angst, and it truly looks so cool! Well, I also didn’t expect that it would have an impressive and awesome technology, that it can offer!

McLaren really had an impressive exterior detailing and the angst that it had been is truly so striking about it. The technology of it is also very awesome on it, and I must say that its engine is already quite satisfying.

I’m impressed with its turbocharged V8 engine that can delivers a powerful 592 HP at 7,000 RPM. It can surely give a better performance on it. Furthermore, as for the looks of this one, I can say that it is oozing with angst which is very impressive on it.

Hi everybody. I am Bruno Prata from Portugal and I want to tell you that I am taking my driving license at the driving school, Técnica do Volante, in my hometown Castelo Branco. Anyway, if I live outside Portugal (for example in the UK or in Germany) and have had the opportunity to drive a real exotic car on a race track such as the Nürburgring Nordschleife, I would like to drive the McLaren MP4-12C because is scientifically and mathematically better than the Ferrari 458 Italia. Everybody know that the McLaren has a very strong carbon fiber chassis designated Monocell and has a fantastic and brilliant engine (a 3.8 liter twin-turbocharged V8 with aproximately 600 bhp @ 7000 rpm and 443 lb-ft of torque between 3000 to 7000 rpm with 80 percent of peake torque is available under 2000 rpm) with direct fuel injection and that is a true masterpiece. Another feature of this car is the 7-speed dual-clutch gearbox with a function that McLaren engineers called Pre-Cog in which the driver can select the gears with the two paddle-shifts behind the steering wheel with maximum precision and lightning response without losing traction. Even the driving position of this car is perfect and I really admit that this car mugs the tarmac at any race track against its rivals, such as the Ferrari 458 Italia or the Lamborghini Gallardo or even the Porsche 911 Turbo, and has no mercy for anything else. But this is only my oppinion about exotic cars, in general, and, particularly, about the McLaren MP4-12C.

Where living in reality where lots of critic and negative thoughts may say such this one. Have their are concept that you should be praised, such this McLaren MP4-12C. Everything seems perfect.

Yeah! It really looks so awesome but did you hear the news guys with this sports car? They need to stop the production of this one because of some problem that this car encountering. I just hope it won’t take long.

McLaren is so impressive on its sporty and aggressive looks. The front gives so much angst on it even the side rims look so cool. The wheels are cool with it either. I must say that I much more prepared with this one than Ferrari.

McLaren MP4-12C had an impressive exterior detailing and it’s already looking great on its sleek body paint. The facilities that it had seemed so interesting, if only they include some interior pictures of this.

I can’t wait for the releasing of this McLaren. I would really love to see this one on a race! Well, I just hope that the horsepower and engine that it had been enough to beat its competitor.

I would still prepare Ferrari Italia than this McLaren, but I can say that this sports car is quite impressive also. The detailing on it is so awesome. And it was so great to know that it is already sold out, well, congratulations! smiley

The platform of the car was based on science that’s why it’s not that sporty. However, the deliver power output is just enough to make it blast in the race track!

This is one of the impressive vehicle plus it’s a speedy. Although, I don’t think that this is sporty unlike the Ferrari Italia. I will still say that its figure performance is just enough to make everyone drool.

Yeah, it has an impressive figure performance. Th styling was great and if not mistaken this car was rank in the second place in the Top Gear show.

We all know that Mclaren has an impressive speed performance. The car is not that sporty though the figure performance is incredible. Still I think the Ferrari Italia is the best competitor of this vehicle.

The car really looks yummy. I hope they will produce more of this on the market since many people are longing for this one. For me, it is the most successful production of Mclaren.

Well, due to its awesome speed performance the car was already sold out! Hell! I really love the power output of the car. I wonder if we can still an aftermarket version for this vehicle?

As expected from the McLaren , it has an impressive power output though it doesn’t have a sporty look! It seems that science have perfect the speed performance of the car.
