TopSpeed’s 10 Best High-End Sports Cars

What is a high-end sports car? Are they Italian performance machines like the Ferrari 458 and the Lamborghini Gallardo, or are they more sensible vehicles like the BMW M5 and the Mercedes-Benz SL63 AMG? We think they’re the latter.

For this top ten, we are going to set the price cap at $120,000, if you can call that a cap. That should eliminate most of the extreme vehicles, but keep the basic Porsches and so on within the limits.

What kinds of things are we looking for with high-end sports cars? Obviously, they need to be fast with agile handling and excellent driving dynamics. The car needs to look stunning with a functional yet stylish interior. It would also be great if it could stand the test of time, so reliability is also a factor.

Let’s review the previous winners of our sports car test. The Volkswagen GTI took the top spot in the entry-level test due to its excellent performance, build quality, and versatility. There were numerous winners of the mid-level test, as we had multiple categories. We chose the Audi S4, the BMW M3, and the Ford Mustang GT500 as the top cars in their classes.

BMW’s 4.4L V8 twin turbo vs Mercedes’ 5.5L V8 twin turbo.

bmw 8217 s 4.4l v8 twin turbo vs mercedes 8217 5.5l v8 twin turbo. picture

Remember the words of performance guru Mr. Carroll Shelby: Horsepower sells cars, torque wins races. Mercedes Benz surely remembers and they have taken the queue to come out on top with the launch of their revolutionary 5.5L V8 twin turbo engine.

Slated to make appearances in the CL, CLS, S, and E class, this new development has got BMW shaking in their boots as this engine will make its way to the 2011 E class AMG, arch rival to the much fabled BMW M5. With the number of horses increasing from 525 to 537, the real gain is the massive surge of torque which has gone from 630 Nm found on the previous 6.3 V8 to a whopping 900 Nm. These numbers will be able to make mince meat out of the 2011 BMW M5 which is powered by a 4.4L V8 engine, churning 555 BHP and 680 Nm of torque.

The M5 has already been caught testing months before the forthcoming Paris Motor Show and BMW boffins are still focusing on improving its power-to-weight ratio, as the almost 300Nm of extra torque present in the 5.5 V8 engine would simply obliterate the M5 in a drag race.

With the temperatures soaring from the heat generating from the horsepower war between Mercedes and BMW, expect fringe players like Jaguar and Audi to take queue and worsen the situation.

2011 Mercedes E63 AMG

Mercedes announced today a few changes made for the 2011 E63 AMG sports sedan model. For 2011 the model will get even higher quality standard appointments. In Germany it will be priced at 105,791 euros for the sedan version and at 108,409 euros for the station wagon version.

Under the hood there is the usual 6.3-liter V8 engine which is now mated to the AMG SPEEDSHIFT MCT 7-speed sports transmission from the SL 63 AMG. This combination develops a total of 525 hp and a peak torque of 630 NM which enables the car to sprint from 0 to 60 mph in just 4.5 seconds, while top speed is limited to 155 mph. THe E63 AMG’s fuel efficiency is even decreased by 12% thanks to an on-demand delivery of fuel and generator management with recuperation of braking energy on the overrun. Also adding to the decrease in fuel efficiency is the elimination of the usual torque converter for a "wet start-up clutch running in an oil bath."

For 2011 the interior of the E 63 AMG is being offered with some new options that are sure to please anyone. These options are part of the designo extended leather appointments II range and consist of being able to cover the lower section of the dashboard, the glove compartment lid, the door linings including map pockets, and the side upholstery of the center console with exclusive nappa leather.

Video: Audi RS6 vs. Mercedes E63 AMG

Fifth Gear’s Jason Plato has put two of the most powerful sedans of all times face to face. Check out what happens when the Audi RS6 and the Mercedes E63 AMG battle it out, but first, let’s take a look at the two sets of specs to get a better idea of which sedan will come out on top.

The Audi RS6 is powered by a 5.0 liter V10 engine that delivers a total of 580 hp and 480 ft lbs of torque which is definitely more powerful than the 6.3-liter V8 engine found in the E63 AMG that develops 518hp. This difference translates into little difference in the 0-60mph sprint which both cars can make in 4.5 seconds. Top speeds for both cars are limited to 155mph, but the top speed in the RS6 can be increased to 174mph upon the customer’s request.

So, which do you think would be the top pick between the two German sports sedans, the RS6 or the E63 AMG? See if your choice matches Jason Plato’s by watching the video!

Video: Susie Stoddart takes the reins of a Mercedes E63 AMG and goes wild on it

Any man who tells you that they don’t find a female race car driver that can hold her own against the boys hot is either blind or gay. Fortunately, all of us here have pretty good eyesight and are only interested in people of the opposite gender.

If you’re wondering why we’re talking about this, the video that we’re going to show has everything any waking man desires: Scottish DTM driver and resident vixen Susie Stoddart and a Mercedes E63 AMG Wagon. Even better, Stoddart shows us boys exactly how to take this steering stallion on a sideways burn. That’s some serious smoking hotness right there.

Review: Mercedes-Benz E550 Cabriolet

According to Mercedes-Benz, the average buyer of the new E-Class cabriolet will be similar to the buyer of the old CLK. They will be male, over 50, and will most likely be golfers, as most Mercedes drivers are.

While these might not all be true, they do give out one valuable piece of information. Four-seat cabriolets are not going to be cool cars for young adults. They are too big and too expensive. All of this is truly a shame because the new E550 Cabriolet is very good. It looks aggressive, has plenty of room, and goes like stink. The exterior design is fabulous. A blocky feel that makes one think of precise engineering and longevity. It’s not too flashy, but it’s not understated either.

Admittedly, some people haven’t yet warmed up to the new headlights. Personally, we like them. The old E-Class was too old school, too retirement home. This new one is a great mixture of style and sophistication.
