Mercedes GLK Urban Whip

Mercedes GLK Urban Whip

Last week we posted four customized Mercedes GLKs that were making their way to SEMA. Now here’s a closer look at one of the more outrageous versions, the Urban Whip. Developed in cooperation with RoBrady Design, this small SUV is turned into something like a tall roadster.

RoBrady Design removed the roof, shorted the windshield, and lowered the ride height by 64mm. As usual with a SEMA car, there is special attention paid to wheels and tires. The Urban Whip featuresl 26” Asanti AF 150 chrome wheels with custom black accents and wrapped in 295/25 ZR26 Pirelli Scorpion rubber for a perfect ride.

Four customized GLK coming to SEMA

Four customized GLK coming to SEMA

What better way to launch a new car in the U.S. than by first showing the country outlandishly customized (and sometimes hideously butchered) versions of the car first? Four customized Mercedes GLK will make their way to the 2008 SEMA Show: Widestar, Urban Whip, Pikes Peak Rally Racer and Rock Crawler. This presentation also represents the GLK premiere on the North American market, where sales are scheduled to begin in January 2009.

The GLK Pikes Peak Rally Racer created by Renntech is inspired by the legendary Pikes Peak Hill Climb in Colorado. The car comes with hybrid module that seems to be more geared for acceleration than green.

GLK Urban Whip was created by Boulevard Customs and features a significantly widened bodyshell, massive 26-inch wheels and a new on-board entertainment system.

The GLK Rock Crawler was designed by team at the Legendary Motorcar Company. Their creation features a winch system that can provide wakeboarders and snowboarders with assistance.

Brabus will bring the most conservative design, but that’s also because it is production ready.

The base vehicle for Boulevard Customs, Legendary Motorcar and RENNtech is the series production GLK350 with a 3.5 litre V6 engine generating 272 hp, while BRABUS opted for the diesel-driven GLK 320 CDI 4MATIC. The base versions of all models are equipped with the 7G-TRONIC seven-speed automatic transmission.

10,000 orders for the GLK-Class

The 2010 Mercedes GLK was launched only a month ago and only in Western Europe, but Mercedes has already received a total of 10,000 orders. 1,000 of these orders are attributed to a limited edition called “Edition 1” that offers a few special interior and exterior add-ons. Diesel GLK and C-Class in USA by 2010

Diesel GLK and C-Class in USA by 2010

Mercedes plans to give the C-Class and GLK SUV a new 2.2-liter diesel engine in North America by 2010. Because of emissions regulations, Mercedes needs to re-engineer the engine to accept BlueTEC technology. A company spokesman said, "The 2.2-liter in the GLK already averages 34 miles per gallon U.S. With BlueTec that will improve to just under 40."

The decision has been made first because of the rising fuel prices and also because of the weak dollar.

You can read all about BlueTEC technology from when Mercedes gave TopSpeed an exclusive look.
