Amongst all the hype about hybrids and electric vehicles, here’s a refreshing look at Mercedes’ all new V8 engines – yes please! Hybrids and EV’s are driving us crazy. They dominate the news, world conferences, and pretty much everything in between. Apart from them being deeply unexciting and bland, they are stupidly weak in the area of performance. Thank God for Mercedes Benz! The Germans have released specs of two brand new V8 engines and guess what? Not an electric motor in sight!

US journalists will soon be taking their first drives through New York’s Hudson Valley region in all-new direct injection biturbo V8-engined CL model. The new-from-the-ground-up 4.6-liter V8 engine has a 20 percent smaller displacement than its predecessor, but generates 429 horsepower and 516 lb.-ft. of torque - 12 percent more horsepower and 32 percent more torque than the engine it replaces - yet fuel economy is improved by about 10%. This new engine is available in the restyled 2011 CL550 4MATIC .

The second engine making its debut is the hand-assembled high-performance 5.5-liter AMG V8 engine, featuring the use of stop/start technology as well as twin turbochargers and direct injection. This new engine produces 536 hp and 590 lb-ft of torque while at the same time achieving an estimated 20 percent improvement in fuel economy. Mated to the award-winning 7-speed AMG SPEEDSHIFT MCT transmission, this new engine is available in the 2011 CL63 AMG coupe and S63 AMG sedan. For even more performance the optionally available AMG Performance Package increases engine power to 563 hp and 664 lb-ft. for torque; top speed also increases to 186 mph. Thank you, Mercedes, for saving us from another boring engine discussion!

Mercedes has unveiled at the Paris Auto Show the S 250 CDI BlueEFFICIENCY, the world’s most fuel-efficient luxury sedan. It is powered by four-cylinder turbo engine that delivers 204 HP and 500 NM of torque and delivers a total of 5,7 liters engine per 100 kilometers. The car sprints from 0 to 60 mph in just 8,2 seconds and can hit a top speed of 150 mph.

The engine is mated to ECO start/stop system. This system shuts down the engine as soon as the vehicle comes to a stop – e.g. at traffic lights – and the driver continues to press the brake pedal while it is stationary. The engine starts again immediately as soon as the driver releases the brake pedal or presses the accelerator pedal.

The ECO start/stop function will not switch the engine off for example if the desired interior temperature has yet to be reached, if the driver has switched off the system or if drive programmes "S" or "M" are active. An intelligent control system ensures that all functions and comfort systems otherwise remain in operation during the stop phase.

Mercedes is popping the hood of their new S-Class models and dropping in four new diesel and petrol engines, including the S 250 CDI BlueEFFICIENCY, S 350 BlueTEC, S 350 BlueEFFICIENCY, and S 500 BlueEFFICIENCY.

The S250 CDI BlueEFFICIENCY features a 2.2-liter CDI engine that delivers 204 HP and 500 Nm at 1600 rpm. All of this power comes with a fuel consumption of only 5.7 liters per 100 kilometers. The S 350 BlueTEC is powered by a V6 engine that develops 258 HP and 620 NM of torque. This version has a fuel consumption of 6.8 liters per 100 kilometers.

The S 350 BlueEFFICIENCY is powered by a 3.5-liter V6 engine that delivers a total of 306 HP and 370 NM of torque, all with only 7.6 liters per 100 kilometers. The S 500 BlueEFFICIENCY gets a new V8 biturbo engine with an impressive output of 435 HP and 700 NM of torque. All versions have a top speed limited to 155 mph.

In order to achieve better fuel efficiency and consumption, Mercedes also added an extensively revised, high-efficiency 7G-TRONIC PLUS 7-speed automatic transmission and the ECO start/stop function. The start/stop function comes standard in the S 250 CDI BlueEFFICIENCY as well as the S 350 BlueEFFICIENCY and S 500 BlueEFFICIENCY models.

Brabus has gone to the extremes. First they tuned Mercedes’ most powerful sports car: the SLS AMG , and now they have turned to one of the most luxurious models in the line-up: the SL600 . The new Brabus "iBusiness" SV12 R model is not only about high performance, but also about innovative multimedia technology.

We won’t talk too much about the engine, as it is one that you should be familiar with by now: an SV12 R Biturbo 750 12-cylinder engine with an output of 750 hp. This provides the luxury sedan with a top speed of 211 mph.

What we will focus on is the car’s technology. Apple seems to have given away the cow as this luxury sedan is completely outfitted with Apple components. The brains of the operation is a 15.2-inch TFT display with 16:9 aspect ratio and internet connection via UMTS and HSDPA. To that, an ultra-small Mac minicomputer is added under the rear shelf. This minicomputer is hidden by an electronic door that looks like the computer itself. Controlling these computers is made easy with the use of twoiPads located in the front passenger seat as well as in the backseat. These iPads not only control the computers, put can also navigate through the entire multimedia center including the radio, navigation system, and telephone. And, of course, there is Alcantara and leather all over the interior.

There are much better ways to drive around without getting noticed and driving around in cars that cost well over what any of us make isn’t one of them.

Our cars - a Mercedes-Benz S600 AMG , BMW 760Li , Jaguar XJ and the Audi A8 - are dressed in their best colors with the waxed paint job glimmering in the evening sunlight. Driving through the heavily used highways around the Cleveland area is prime gawking time for motorists. At first, the stares and pointing fingers can make you feel a bit uncomfortable, but can you blame them? It isn’t everyday that you see a luxury barge roll through a relatively poor city, especially now that LeBron James is gone.

These four sedans might be large in stature, but one nudge or poke in the wrong place and its goodnight in one impressive display. So, with more onlookers than a Thanksgiving Day parade, we are obliged to find the best luxury sedan among the four.

The Japanese tuner Wald International has prepared a new tuning package for the Mercedes S-Class . In the tuner’s tradition the new package is called the Black Bison Edition and includes new front and rear bumpers, sportier fender ducts, refreshed sidesteps, two new rear spoilers (one on the decklid and one above the glass), and 22-inch matte Renovatio wheels.

All of the cars will be painted in an exclusive Wald color and will get a new exhaust system with dual tailpipes.

The same treatment has also been recently applied to the E-Class . For that package the tuner added a new front bumper with a protruding lower lip, four large projector style driving lights, and vents on either side. The difference between the tuning kit for the E-Class and the S-Class is that the latest one comes painted in white, while the E-Class featured a black exterior color.

Prices for the new package have not been announced yet.

Mercedes is currently testing the next generationS-Class that will be unveiled at the end of the year. Codenamed the W222, the next S-Class will be inspired by the F700 Concept unveiled at the Detroit Auto Show.

What we know for sure is that the next S-Class will get blacked-out headlamps, a dummy front grille, and a new front bumper. Under the hood there will be a revised range of V6 and V8 engines. The base version will get a V6 engine with stop-start technology and revised direct injection that improves fuel economy. The top version will get a 4.6 liter V8 engine (down from the current 5.4 liter version) that delivers 429 HP and offers improved fuel economy. The diesel line-up will include a new base version called the S250 CDI and is powered by a 2.1 liter four-cylinder engine with 204 HP.

Also, the next S-class is believed to be the first model to use Mercedes’ radical Diesotto powerplant. The system was introduced in the F700 concept and it is in fact a four-cylinder with a displacement of only 1.8 liters, combining the strong points of the low-emission gasoline engine with the consumption benefits of the diesel drive.

MEC Design has unveiled a new look for the old S-Class . The styling package will go with the W221 pre-facelift Mercedes luxury sedan.

Created for a customer in Germany, the 2007 S550 looks nearly identical to the S65 AMG . The only thing that might give the car away are it’s lack of LED turn signals in the headlamps and LED daytime running lights in the front bumper.

The MEC team installed AMG bumpers, 20-inch wheels, an ELS lowering module and a high performance exhaust system.

Inside the Mercedes, the cabin has a MEC designed steering wheel and floor mats with leather edging.

We have no idea how much it cost the owner, but we can only guess it sure wasn’t cheap.
