Mercedes SL-Class

The Mercedes-Benz SL-Class is a series of automobiles with some of the most prestigious nameplates in the motor industry. The designation, which means "Sport Light" or in German, Sport Leicht, first appeared on the 1954 300SL ’Gullwing’ so nicknamed because of its passenger doors which opened upwards.

Video: More Teasing of the 2013 Mercedes-Benz SL65 AMG

Mercedes-Benz is due to release likely one of the most impressive vehicles that it has in many years at the upcoming New York Auto Show. This 2013 SL65 AMG has been at the forefront of automotive news lately, so its details have been pretty well documented.

We all know that it will feature a 6.0-liter V-12 engine with twin turbochargers, which will pummel concrete with its hefty 621 horsepower and 738 pound-feet of torque. This impressive power plant will link to a seven-speed transmission, which Mercedes has dubbed the SpeedShift Plus. This drivetrain combination launches the SL65 AMG to 60 mph in just 3.9 seconds. The SL65 AMG wouldn’t be complete without at least a little driver input and Mercedes solves this, from the looks of it on the video, by fitting the SL65 AMG with paddle shift controls on the steering wheel.

Just a few days ago, we released a video of the SL65 AMG cruising down a desert road and it turns out that was actually the filming for a complete teaser video, which Mercedes-Benz just officially released. By the looks of it, this is going to be one mean, nasty, yet sexy machine that would entice anyone with the means to lay out $300K to put one in his driveway. We know if we had the means to buy it, this impressive luxury machine would be in our driveways the day it’s released. We do know that its European release is coming in September 2012, but its U.S release is still uncertain.

Take a look at the video for yourself and see if you don’t suddenly find yourself looking at your budget and trying to see if you can squeeze the 2013 SL65 AMG into it.

2013 Mercedes SL500 R231 Tuningpremiere by Wheelsandmore

In case there was ever a question in anyone’s mind, German tuner Wheelsandmore is considered one of the best in the tuning business for their impeccable versatility in tuning sports cars. These guys don’t discriminate with their work, and that’s no more evident in their latest project involving the all-new Mercedes SL500 R231. Fresh off the press, Wheelsandmore’s program for the SL500 R231 is billed as "Tuningpremiere," and like everything the tuner does these days, the program comes chalk full of amenities.

To begin with, Wheelsandmore wrapped the Mercedes roadster in an aluminum-silver-gray finish that adds a vestige of mystique to the car’s overall look. In addition to that, the tuner also fitted the SL500 with a new set of 20" 6Sporz² wheels that can be wrapped in Continental Sport Contact 5P tires.

The car’s suspension was also tweaked, courtesy of a fully adjustable suspension module called LowMaXX. As always, the final piece to the tuning puzzle deals with engine modifications. Thanks to a remapped ECU system, Wheelsandmore managed to increase the engine output of the SL500 R231 to an impressive 505 horsepower and 590 lb/ft of torque, an increase of 70 ponies and 74 lb/ft of torque.

2013 Mercedes-Benz SL63 AMG

In early 2012, Mercedes unveiled the new generation SL-Class, but their newest unveiling is the one we’ve actually been waiting for. After previewing the most powerful model in the SL series during the official launch of the new Mercedes AMG Petronas F1 W03 race car in Spain, Mercedes has officially unveiled the SL63 AMG.

As expected, the SL63 AMG looks more aggressive than the standard SL-Class thanks to a deeper front bumper with larger air intakes, the usual AMG LED daytime running lights sitting inside the bumper, "V8 Biturbo" badges, a subtle rear deck spoiler, and the quad trapezoidal-shaped chromed tailpipes.

The new Mercedes SL63 AMG is powered by the same twin-turbocharged 5.5-liter V8 engine already used in models like the CLS 63 AMG, tuned to deliver a total of 537 HP, or 564 HP when equipped with the AMG Performance package. Thanks to the all-aluminum bodyshell and assorted magnesium components, the new sports car is about 240 lbs lighter than its predecessor. The added power and decrease in weight allows it a 0-60 mph time of just 4.3 seconds. Top speed is limited to 155 mph, but if the customer opts for the removal of the top speed limiter then they will enjoy impressive 186 mph. At the same time, Mercedes has promised that the fuel economy has been improved by 30%.

UPDATE 03/06/2012: We have added a new series of live images from the 2012 Geneva Motor Show. Enjoy!

UPDATE 04/24/2012: Mercedes has unveiled a new promo video presenting the brand new SL 63 AMG and SL 65 AMG driven in the beautiful scenery of Tenerife. Enjoy!

Video: Mercedes SL history explained in 1 minute 30 seconds

Mercedes just released the new generation SL-Class out on the market, but the road to this moment has been really long. The history of the Mercedes SL began in 1954 and has lasted through six generations. A history that long deserves recognition, so Mercedes has released this video that explains the many years of the SL-Class’ success.

The first Mercedes SL-Class was powered by a four-cylinder engine, but a lot has evolved since then and now the SL is powered by a V8 engine that pushes out a total of 429 HP and 516 lb-ft of torque (top version).

While describing the video, Mercedes said: "For 60 years the Mercedes-Benz SL has been an automotive icon, synonymous with outstanding innovation and refined athleticism. Take a look through the evolution of a car that continues to set standards for what a car should be."

First US 2013 Mercedes SL63 AMG will go to the highest bidder in Boca Raton

1.

The 2013 Mercedes SL63 AMG hasn’t even made its official debut just yet and already Mercedes is giving the first one away. Okay, technically, they’re not giving it away, but they are certainly not selling it directly to one of their customers. When the first unit of the SL63AMG hits Stateside, Mercedes will be sending it to the Boca Raton Concours d’Elegance Gala for their 6th annual auction on February 25, 2012.

The upcoming SL63 AMG will be powered by a 5.5-liter twin turbo V8 engine that will delivers about 540 HP. A Black Series version will also be offered and has been rumored to deliver more than the current 661 HP version. The model will be distinguished from the standard SL-Class by a more aggressive design including a long hood, AMG wheels, cross-drilled brakes, a rear wing, and new AMG quad exhausts.

A 2012 Audi R8 GT Spyder and a Lamborghini Aventador LP700-4 will also be at the auction, making for a great opportunity to skip the waiting list.

2011 Mercedes SL65 AMG Black Fortune by Veilside

Anytime someone has a car like the Mercedes SL65 AMG and gets an opportunity to do some tuning work on it, that person shouldn’t even think about hesitating.

Now if that person happens to live in Japan, there’s even more incentive to bring their German sports car to the boys over at Veilside, considering that they’re in the process of unveiling a new aerodynamic body kit at the 2012 Tokyo Auto Salon.

Developed under Veilside’s new Black Fortune sub-brand, the aerodynamic program consists of a complete overhaul of parts, including a new front bumper spoiler, new side skirts, a new rear bumper and diffuser, a new rear spoiler, and a slew of other parts, all of which are made entirely out of carbon fiber.

Coming from the same guys that worked on a Mercedes SLR McLaren under another one of their brands - Premier4509 - Veilside has made a habit of building some swanky programs for Mercedes. In the case of the Black Fortune program for the SL65 AMG, Veilside will be limiting it to ’only’ 300 units at a cost of €30,000 - $38,450 - for the entire package.

2013 Mercedes SL-Class prepares for launch as last Mercedes SL R230 rolls off production line

Since Mercedes is working away on its next generation SL-Class, units of the current model are fast coming to an end. The last SL R 230 Model Series, unit number 169,434, already rolled off the assembly line at the Bremen plant on November 30, 2011.

This specific SL R230 unit is painted in an Iridium silver exterior color and is powered by a 315 BHP 3.5-liter V6 petrol engine. Unfortunately, no one will actually be driving it because it will be added to the automotive gallery of the Mercedes-Benz Museum, right next to the iconic roadsters that wrote the prestigious 60-year history of the ’Sport Leicht’ range.

Fear not, though, the 2013 Mercedes SL-Class has already been spotted a number of times, each time with less camouflage than before. With this new generation, Mercedes hopes to achieve a lighter sports car. In fact, they have announced that the next SL-Class will be the first Mercedes model produced in large series to use an all-aluminum bodyshell that is about 242 lbs lighter than a comparable steel bodyshell. As a result, the new SL 500 weighs 275 lbs less than its predecessor, while the SL 350 weighs the above-mentioned 308 lbs less than its previous version.

The new 2013 Mercedes SL-Class will be making its world debut in January 2012 at the Detroit Auto Show, but Mercedes will be offering its official specs on December 15, 2011. Stay tuned!

Spy Shots: Mercedes SL-Class Strips Down and Shows off its New Grill

Mercedes just finished up with the new generation of its SLK-Class, but recent spy shots of the Mercedes SL-Class show the company hasn’t wasted time preparing its next model. With a history dating back to 1954, the SL-Class is probably one of the more impressive Mercedes models, and its new generation will make it even better.

The SL-Class was caught testing yet again, this time wearing less camouflage than ever. Now we can see the more upright grille the company had to use due to European rules regarding pedestrian protection and the new exterior color that fits this sporty car perfectly. What we don’t understand are those hideously ugly rims Mercedes decided to use for the prototype. Hopefully, Mercedes will nix those for the final product.

For the interior, we expect to see many elements from the SLS AMG with plenty of leather and aluminum. Power will come from a wide range of power plants, starting with a 3.5 liter V6, going to a 4.6 liter bi-turbo V8, and ending with the wild AMG version sporting a 536bhp twin-turbocharged 5.5-liter V8.

The new 2013 Mercedes SL-Class will go on sale in the third quarter of 2012.

2011 Mercedes SL-Class R230 Black Bison Edition by Wald International

The SEMA Show is not just for American tuners and their tuning packages. Wald International, the famous Japanese tuner, has also confirmed their presence in Las Vegas with a tuning package based on the Mercedes-Benz R230 SL-Class. The model will be displayed courtesy of U.S. distributor Jonari Corporation.

The tuner has said nothing about an engine upgrade, but the exterior has been heavily modified, although its not something that we’re particularly impressed about. The aerodynamic package includes: a front bumper fascia, front sports fenders, side skirts, rear bumper fascia, quarter panel wheel arch extensions and a trunk spoiler.

As far as we’re concerned, the element that totally ruins the look of the car is a DTM sports muffler with twin exhaust pipes placed in the middle of the rear diffuser. The final element includes a new set of Renovatio R12 wheels in sizes 9J x 20-inch at the front and 11J x 20-inch at the back.
