Here’s a compilation of what Mercedes’ new gullwing coupe may look like. The picture above has taken all of the elements from the rumors as well as what was seen in spy shots. The car, which has been called the SLC, should be the replacement for the SLR . The new flagship supercar is expected to have a V8 or possibly a V12 engine and will be built in-house by AMG.
Will the final version look exactly like this? Doubtful. But if you squint your eyes, you can see all the shapes melt together into a graceful coupe, and this likely what you’ll see produced in 2011.
Mercedes and McLaren are looking to go separate ways: McLaren with the P11 supercar and Mercedes with the SLC . The coupe version will be revealed at the 2010 Geneva motor show (with a concept expected in fall 2009) and a roadster version will follow in 2011. Car Magazine revealed the measurements of the gullwing SLC: 183 in long, 77in wide and 49in tall – all wrapped around a 106in wheelbase. Codenamed C197, the coupe version will be powered by a a modified 6.2-liter AMG V-8 engine with an output of 600 hp.
It is also rumored that this may not carry Mercedes’s three-point star badge at all. Instead the SLC may only have AMG badges. So much for a successor to the original 300 SL gullwing.
The SLR is dead, but all hope is not lost. The SLR’s successor, the SLC supercar has already been caught testing. The first official peak at the concept version will be unveiled in 2009 at the Frankfurt Motor Show, and the production car will debut in late 2010.
Unlike the McLaren built SLR, the SLC will be produced in-house by Mercedes’ performance unit AMG. Rumors say it will feature a mid-engined layout and will be powered by a supercharged 6.2 liter V8 engine. Although the horsepower has not been announced, considering that the SLC will be placed between the S65 AMG (604 hp) and the departing SLR (617 hp), it should put out at least 600-610 hp. Top speed will be around 200 mph, while the 0 to 60 mph sprint will be made in 3.5 - 3.7 seconds.
Mercedes will launch the SLC Coupe (codenamed C197) at the 2010 Geneva Motor Show and a roadster version (R197) will follow a year later. It will be badged an AMG, not as a Mercedes.
The coupe and roadster will cost around the same as a well-equipped Porsche 911 Turbo – the target is €150,000 (£105,000) – and in size they are closer to the SLR than the SL.
The design is a mix of retro and modern: there are large, roof-hinged gullwing doors, almost upright bi-xenon headlamps, a classic SL grille, a tapered plan view, LED tail lamps, a motorised rear spoiler and a pair of downforce-producing front and rear aprons. The wheels are 19-inch in the front and 20-inch in the back.
The future Gullwing will be powered by a 6.3-litre V8 engine mated to the new Sportshift box. The output will be around 550bhp. It will make the 0 to 60 mph sprint in 3,8 seconds and will hit a top speed of 185 mph.
The Mercedes SLR is not such a successful model, so the company decided is time to end it and replace it with something better: the future SLC supercar. Being a replica of the original 300 SL with modern mechanicals, the SLC will be built by AMG.
The SLC supercar will use components from the SL65 Black Series, but unlike the SL Black Series, the SLC will use a welded aluminium spaceframe, which will increase the car’s strength but reduce weight.
The SLC will be powered by a new version of the SL65 Black’s twin-turbo 6.2-litre V8 with well over 600bhp. New turbos have allowed AMG to add direct injection to improve economy. The engine will be mated with AMG’s new seven-speed MCT ’box, just launched in the SL63.
After the fake Porsche Cayenne / Lamborghini SUV seen on the Ring, now Edmunds show us a video of the Mercedes SLC to come in 2011. It looks like , huh... a Dodge Viper! For real it seems that the new game of car maker is now to put fake bodies on top of their test drive cars.
Spy photographers caught the upcoming Mercedes SLC super coupe in testings into California’s canyons. Even if the prototype is using Dodge Viper body panels, Mercedes-piloting engineers have confirmed that is indeed the SLC.
Mercedes-Benz is presently developing a new front-engined supercar, meant to compete with the Audi R8 and the rest of the gang. Less luxurious and more performance oriented, the future Mercedes SLC will be a serious threat for the Ferrari s and Porches of the next decade. Several Mercedes -Benz test mules that point that the German manufacturer has in works a new supercar have been spotted. The best guess is that the mules are early variants of the highly anticipated SLC. Although, (...) More
It appears that rumors that Mercedes -Benz will be building a car to compete with the forthcoming Audi R8 and the Porsche 911 Turbo are true. Spy photos published by Winding Road show that car, to be built on the next generation SL platform and with liberal use of carbon fiber for the roof and body panels. Expected to produce at least 500 hp from a front 6.2 liter V-8, the car is expected to be revealed at the 2008 Geneva Auto (...)
