The new generation E-Class Coupe made its world debut at the 2013 Detroit Auto Show->ke222 and now Mercedes->ke187 announced that the model can be further customized with a new AMG Sport Package. Buyers can apply this new package to both the exterior and the interior, and it further updates the look and the aerodynamics of the E500 Coupe->ke373.

The new package is available in two versions: Sports and Sports Plus, and will add a series of updates that make the E500 look a little more like the AMG version of the E-Class.

Both packages will offer a new set of AMG light-alloy wheels, sized 18 inches in the base version and 19 inches in the Plus package and a new exhaust system with twin end pipes.

Those of you interested will have to pay about $1,700 for the Sports package and $4,500 for the Plus package.

Exterior

The new E-Class Coupe received new headlamps fitted with partial LED lights, a V-shaped front bumper with larger air intakes and new taillights.

AMG Sports package

The AMG Sports Package checks in with a full aerodynamic kit that includes an AMG-styled front apron with air intakes and a chrome wing to add a little oomph to the front end's appearance; AMG-styled side skirts; and an AMG rear apron with a rear output filter and diffuser. On the backside, the AMG Sports Package also adds in dual exhaust with trapezoidal tailpipes coated in chrome.

On the corners, the AMG Sports Package tosses in 18-inch five-twin-spoke light-alloy wheels covered with 235/40R18 tires up front and 255/35R18 tires on the rear. As an option, customers can swap out the 18-inch wheels for 19-inch rollers.

AMG Plus Sports package

The AMG Plus Sports Package gets the same body kit as the base AMG Sports Package, including: front and rear aprons, and side skirts. It also gets the same twin-trapezoidal exhaust exits as the AMG Sports Package. On top of the aero kit and exhaust, the AMG Sports Plus gains a trunk-lid spoiler for a little extra downforce and a set of 19-inch rollers wrapped up in 235/35R19 tires up front and 255/30R19 tires on the rear.

Interior

As if the interior on the E-Class isn’t awesome enough, these two packages make them even better with high-end materials and other desirable upgrades.

AMG Sports package

The AMG Sports package adds in a set of multicontour front seats for added comfort and support. The entire interior is wrapped up in Black ARTICO manmade leather upholstery with all0-leather and Nappa leather as available options. A flat-bottomed, three-spoke Nappa-leather-wrapped steering wheel with perforated grips is also standard.

A set of black shifter paddles are positioned directly behind the steering wheel to help you slam through the gears with ease. Floor mats with “AMG” lettering on them remind you of what you’re driving and a set of brushed-aluminum pedals with rubber studs give the foot box a cooler look without sacrificing grip.

AMG Plus Sports package

The AMG Plus Sports package gets little more detail than the base package. It adds in AMG sports seats to keep you in place when cornering hard. Covering the interior is black ARTICO manmade leather with DINAMICA microfiber with red contrast stitching. The three-spoke steering wheel from the base package, the center console and the door center panels also gain red contrast stitching.

Other changes include: silver shifter paddles; red seat belts, which you can substitute with black ones; and brushed-stainless-steel pedals with rubber studs.

Drivetrain

No updates were made under the hood, so even with the AMG Sports package, the E500 keeps the usual V-8 engine. It delivers a total of 408 horsepower and 442 pound-feet of torque and comes mated to a 7-speed automatic transmission with DIRECT SELECT lever and shift paddles.

The E500 can sprint from 0 to 60 mph in just 5.2 seconds and can hit a top speed of 130 mph.

Suspension and Braking

Both of the AMG Sports packages get the added benefit of AGILITY CONTROL sports suspension, which allows the dampers to adjust to each driving situation automatically. This hydro-mechanical system helps keep the E-Class glued to the asphalt regardless of the driving conditions.

The only modification on the braking system is the addition of perforated front rotors and painted brake calipers with “Mercedes-Benz” lettering.

Prices

On the German market the base AMG Sport Package is priced at €1,309 ($1,700 at the current exchange rates) and the Plus version at €3,451 ($4,500).

Competitors

BMW 6-Series Coupe

After begin unveiled back in 2011, the third-generation 6-Series already received a series of upgrades for the 2014 model year. Nothing major, of course, but enough to say BMW did something to improve the 6-Series: there is a revised navigation system and the addition of BMW’s intelligent all-wheel-drive system.

No changes were made under the hood though, so the customers can still choose between the 640i that gets a 315-horsepower six-cylinder engine or the 650i with a 445-horsepower V-8 engine.

That places the E500 somewhere in the middle, but when it comes to prices the Mercedes model is the big winner: it is priced at $51,120, while the 640i at $74,900 and the 650i at $86,200.

Audi S5 Coupe

The Audi A5 is our favorite sports coupe when it comes to looks, but unlike the E500 it is a little bit less powerful. So, the S5 is the closest thing to the E500.

It is powered by a 3.0-liter TFSI direct-injection V-6 engine that delivers a total of 333 horsepower and 325 pound-feet of torque.

Conclusion

With the new AMG Sports Package, the E500 seems to be a little bit closer to the E63 AMG. Of course, it does not deliver the same power level of the AMG version, but in the same time it is considerable cheaper.
