Mercedes just recently announced the SL65 AMG , and they are already using it as a base for the a special edition built to celebrate the model’s 45th anniversary. The new SL 65 AMG 45th Anniversary Edition will be limited to only 45 units and will go on sale in September 2012.
The SL65 AMG 45th is painted in an exclusively designo magno graphite paint finish combined with high-gloss chrome applications. The new edition will be further distinguished by a new "twin-blade" radiator grille with blade-like slats, the surround for the AMG-specific LED daytime driving lights and fins on the wings and the hood.

The new SL 65 AMG "45th ANNIVERSARY" features a carbon-fiber package for the front apron, the exterior mirrors, and the spoiler lip. All of these elements will have a matte finish combined with matte carbon fiber and different aluminum insertions.
The twin tailpipes are finished in black with chrome plating, while the inner insert is finished in high-gloss chrome. The car sits on a new set of 19" light-alloy AMG multi-spoke forged wheels from the AMG Performance Studio.
For the interior, Mercedes is offering a special designo magno graphite paint finish combined with an upholstery in designo Exclusive STYLE leather in titanium grey pearl/ginger beige. The car also gets electrically adjustable AMG sports seats, embossed AMG emblems on the seat backrests, and designo nappa leather roof lining in ginger beige featuring special stitching details in AMG V12 diamond pattern.

The Mercedes SL65 AMG 45th Anniversary Edition is powered by the usual AMG 6.0-liter V12 biturbo engine that delivers a total of 630 HP and 738 lb-ft of torque. The engine is mated to an AMG SPEEDSHIFT PLUS 7-Speed transmission with four individual drive programs that can be selected at the touch of a button on the center console – Controlled Efficiency (C), Sport (S), Sport plus (S+), and Manual (M). It can sprint from 0 to 60 mph in just 3.9 seconds, while top speed goes up to 186 mph.
The new SL 65 AMG 45th Anniversary will go on sale in September 2012. Prices will be announced at a later date. Mercedes will only build 45 units of this special edition.
The list of competitors for the 45th Anniversary Edition are the same as with the standard SL 65 AMG: the Porsche 911 Turbo and the Jaguar XKR-S . The new 911 Turbo is powered by the same 3.8L turbocharged flat six engine as the current 911 Turbo, but massaged to deliver more than the current 500 HP for the standard Turbo and 530 HP for the Turbo S. The XKR-S is powered by a 5.0-liter supercharged AJ-V8 engine that delivers a total of 543 HP and a peak torque of 502 lbs-ft. Top speed also sits at 186 mph.
