It is not a secret anymore that the Chinese market is clamoring for longer versions of the models sold in markets like the U.S. or Europe. So, it should be no surprise to anyone that Mercedes->ke187 has unveiled a long-wheelbase version of the new E-Class at Auto China 2013->ke2470 in Shanghai.

The model measures 5,019 mm (197.59 inches) in length so it offers an extra 140 mm (5.51 inches) legroom in the rear. Also, as a first for the model, the new E-Class Long offers two different front ends. The standard version features the classic, three-dimensional saloon radiator grille in three-louver look, while the Sport Sedan version comes with the sporty front end featuring a centrally positioned star.

Chinese->ke2090 customers can choose between two variants -- luxurious Sedan and the Sport Sedan -- and three trim levels -- E 260 L, E 300 L and E 400 L.

Exterior

As no surprise, the new E-Class Long features the same design language we saw on the standard version. There is a redesigned set of headlamps offered with LED technology for both the low-beam and the integrated daytime running lamps. For the rear, the model received updated lights and bumper.

As a first, the new E-Class Long is offered with two different front ends: the Sedan features the classic, three-dimensional saloon grille in a three-louver look with the Mercedes star on the bonnet, while the Sport Sedan comes with the sporty front end featuring a centrally positioned star.

The Sport Sedan version is also distinguished by a powerful AMG front and rear apron, new AMG side skirts and AMG wheels.

Interior

The luxurious look and feel of the exterior continues to the interior where Mercedes offers the highest-quality materials. As a Mercedes first, the model is also offered with a two-part trim that stretches across the entire dashboard and is offered in either Wood or Ash Tree Black.

Just like with the standard version, the new Long version received a redesigned center console and a new multifunction steering wheel with DIRECT SELECT lever and shift paddles.

Drivetrain

The E-Class Long has a choice of three engines. The base 260 L features a 204-horsepower, four-cylinder engine; a 245-horsepower six-cylinder propels the E 300 L; and the range-topping E 400 L features a 333-horsepower, six-cylinder engine. A hybrid version will arrive in the upcoming months.

All engines will be offered with an automatic transmission as a standard feature.

Prices

Prices for the new E-Class L will be announced at a later date.

Competition

BMW 5-Series LWB

Mercedes is not the only maker to offer such alternatives for the Chinese market. In fact, all the other German competitors do exactly the same.

BMW, for example, offers a long-wheelbase version of the 5-Series, which offers an additional 137 mmm (5.39 inches) of rear legroom for the rear passengers. Just like with the E-Class L, it is offered with a choice of three engines, with power ranging from 204 to 306 horsepower.

Audi A6 LWB

Audi also applies the same treatment for all its sedan models, including the A6. The A6 LWB offers an extra 3.93 inches to the rear legroom, making it the lowest gain of the group. The A6 is offered with a choice of four engines, with power ranging from 170 to 335 horsepower. For the A6 LWB, Chinese customers can choose between both manual and automatic gearboxes.

Conclusion

The new Mercedes E-Class L will be the perfect choice for those looking for a cheaper alternative to high-end luxury limousines. And the fact that it also offers a Sport version is a plus for the model; it would have been nicer though if Mercedes was offering a more powerful engine for the Sport version.
