With 550 horsepower and 531 pound-feet of torque at its disposal, the current Mercedes-Benz E-Class E63 AMG is one of the quickest sedans you can buy nowadays. However, the midsize, German four-door is far from reaching its full potential in its standard guise. The sedan->ke142 is even more capable when an S badge is added to its name, which comes with an additional 27 horsepower and 59 pound-feet for a total output of 577 horsepower and 590 pound-feet.

Impressed? You should, because you can't find that many ponies in a BMW M5 and the Audi S6 is even further behind. But don't hold your breath just yet, the Germans have spawned an even more powerful iteration of the E-Class, one that boasts incredible power, torque and performance figures rarely seen in a midsize sedan.

The Germans we're talking about do not reside in Stuttgart, where Mercedes-Benz->ke187 established its headquarters 88 years ago. Rather, they are located in and conceive their beastly creations in Bottrop. In case it doesn't ring a bell, we're talking about Brabus->ke368, the company behind the most ludicrous Mercedes-based vehicles ever created.

It's newest product goes by the name of E63 AMG 850 6.0 Biturbo and it's a sedan that could smoke some of the most powerful muscle cars available right now, including the lightning-fast Shelby GT500 Super Snake.

Exterior

The 850 6.0 Biturbo is still an E63 AMG on the outside, but Brabus did a lot of wind tunnel testing while developing additional body components. Aside from a spoiler lip attached to the underside of the bumper, the front end isn't different from an aerodynamic stand point. However, the AMG's has received an extra dose of villainy via blacked-out air intakes and front grille, with the latter carrying the big "B" emblem at the center.

Round back, the larger diffuser and the reshaped exhaust piper are the main details that catch the eye, along with blacked-out trim, badging and trunk-lid spoiler. When viewed from the side the Brabus 850 shows off its carbon-fiber mirror caps, new wheels and updated brake rotors and calipers. Rounding off the overall look is a stunning burnt orange hue with a candy finish. Brabus is probably offering several exterior paints, but the one shown here is just screaming for attention.

Interior

Upholstery modifications are limited to Brabus' exclusive and handcrafted fine leather, but the fact that customers can order it in absolutely any color is a pretty big deal. The Germans also took the liberty to fit the steering wheel with aluminum shift paddles and a set of Brabus Race pedals.

Everything else in the cabin is standard Mercedes-Benz E63 AMG, but that's far from being an issue, as the sedan very well equipped and sits high on the luxury ladder in its segment.

Drivetrain

Just like its wagon brother, the sedan is powered by a biturbo, 6.0-liter, V-8 engine that received a displacement increase from the standard 5.5-liter found in V-8-powered AMGs. While the increase can be rated as significant, the power bump is plain staggering, with no less than 850 horsepower and 848 pound-feet of torque being pushed to the wheels. The engine is actually capable of delivering 1,069 pound-feet, but Brabus says it had to limit torque to prevent the drivetrain from enduring too much stress.

Connected to a seven-speed transmission, the mill enables the rear-wheel-drive sedan to sprint from 0 to 62 mph in just 3.7 seconds. The figure improves substantially when the vehicle is equipped with 4MATIC all-wheel-drive, dropping to only 3.1 seconds. These sprints also come with a top speed that can reach up to 217 mph, depending on the tires, the final drive ratio and the tune the Brabus Vmax unit is ordered in.

Speaking of rubber, those looking to push the Brabus 850 6.0 Biturbo to the limit can have it equipped with high performance tires from either Continental, Pirelli or Yokohama wrapped around Monoblock F or R wheels in 20-inch sizes.

The drivetrain comes with a three-year or 62,000-mile warranty covering all necessary repairs or modifications in accordance to the company's current terms and conditions.

Competitors

BMW M5 by Switzer Performance

With the most powerful factory BMW M5 - the "30 Years of M5" Limited Edition - having "only" 600 horsepower on tap, we need to search for a proper rival at one of the aftermarket companies dealing with such matters. One of them is Ohio-based tuner Switzer Performance, mostly known for modifying Porsches and Nissan GTRs, who rolled out an interesting upgrade for the BMW M5.

Using high-flow, drop-in air filters, a removable engine control module and a new stainless-steel exhaust system that includes less-restrictive mufflers and larger-diameter pipes, Switzer managed to increase total output to 700 horsepower and 640 pound-feet of torque. That's less enticing when compared to the Brabus 850 6.0 Biturbo, but a whole lot more than what the standard BMW M5 delivers (560 horsepower / 502 pound-feet).

The new output pushes the sedan from naught to 60 mph in about four seconds, nearly half a second quicker than the regular model, and onto a top speed of around 200 mph.

Conclusion

If you're looking for a spacious sedan with insane power and torque, then your search has come to an end. All you need is a fat wallet and you're set to break the sound barrier while sitting in handcrafted, leather seats. But if you're the selfish type or don't have a couple of kids to take to school each day, you might as well go with a Porsche 911->ke282 or a Corvette Stingray->ke4603.
