Engine

Under the hood of the new E63 AMG, Mercedes has placed an AMG 5.5-liter V-8 biturbo engine that delivers a total of 550 horsepower at 5500 rpm and a peak torque of 531 pound-feet delivered between 1,750 and 5,250 rpm. The model will sprint from 0 to 60 mph in just 3.6 seconds and up to a top speed of 155 mph (electronically limited).

The engine is mated to an AMG SPEEDSHIFT MCT 7-speed sports transmission featuring four driving programs: "C" (Controlled Efficiency), "S" (Sport), "S+" (Sport plus) and "M" (Manual). The "C" mode is offered for those that want to obtain an improved fuel economy. In "C" mode, the start/stop function is active and it will shut off the eight-cylinder engine when the car is at a standstill. The "S," "S+" and "M" transmission modes will help you obtain faster gearshifts and a more aggressive exhaust note.

The new E63 AMG is offered with a high-performance all-wheel-drive system 4MATIC that sends 33 percent of the engine torque to the front and 67 percent to the rear axle.

Because this is a model that delivers an incredible output, Mercedes equipped it with an ultra-powerful AMG high-performance brake system that includes vented and cross-drilled brake discs with a generous 14.2-inch diameter for both front and rear. The brake calipers include six pistons on the front front and four pistons on the rear, and are painted silver with white AMG lettering.

At the New York International Auto Show, Mercedes released some details on the E63 AMG S 4MATIC Wagon. It will feature the same 5.5-liter bi-turbo V-8 engine as the base AMG, but it will deliver a staggering 430 kW (585 horsepower) and 800 Nm (590 pound-feet) of torque. This will allow the wagon to hit 100 km/h (62 mph) in only 3.7 seconds.

Competition

The list of competitors for the new Mercedes E63 AMG is quite long and there is no surprise why the company opted to improve it in so many ways. The biggest competition is, of course, the new BMW M5 -- a model that, according to us, looks a little bit more aggressive and will steal the heart of many racing enthusiast. It comes with a 4.4-liter V-8 engine with an M TwinPower Turbo package that delivers an impressive 560 horsepower and a peak torque of 502 pound-feet. The M5 also has the advantage of delivering a top speed of 190 mph.

Another model that also impressed us is the Jaguar XF-R. It’s true the XF-R is not as powerful as its German rivals, as it features a supercharged 5.0-liter V-8 engine that delivers a total of 510 horsepower and 461 pound-feet of torque, but it offers the same equipment level at an even lower price ($82,000 vs. $90k for both the German models in the 2012 model year).
