The six-wheeled Mercedes-Benz G63 AMG is beyond ridiculous — either in a good or bad way, depending on your specific taste. Based on the 2014 G-Class , but with a host of upgrades, the 6x6 has five differentials, a $615,000 price tag, and off-road credentials that would make an original Army-spec Hummer H1 go weak in the knees. This isn’t stopping Carlsson , a well-known and popular Mercedes-Benz tuner, from upping the game even more, combining a healthy power upgrade along with special, customized interior trimmings to make the G63 AMG 6x6 even more over-the-top, if that’s possible.

The G-Class lineup is already a venerable, capable, and trendy offering, with record-breaking sales. This is impressive, considering this is basically a platform from 1979. That’s right; other than chassis and styling upgrades — along with plenty of modern, Mercedes-Benz luxury added in — you’re looking at an almost 40-year-old design.

Add another $500,000 in off-road hardware and upgrades, and things are bound to get interesting. But that’s just not enough for Carlsson.

The current G63 6x6 boasts some impressive hardware. Six tires, five individually lockable differentials, the ability to inflate and deflate all tires via a large central air compressor, and relatively good performance with a 7.8-second 0-to-60 time, courtesy of the 5.5-liter, twin-turbocharged, hand-built, AMG V8 that produces 544 horsepower and 561 pound-feet of torque. Considering this beast weighs around 9,000 pounds, that’s relatively quick.

Carlsson refuses to leave well enough alone when it comes to Mercedes models, however. In typical fashion, it’s upping the power from an already-fine 544 horsepower to an even 650. Torque rises as well, for a total of 664 pound-feet. These increased ratings come courtesy of an ECU upgrade that tailors ignition timing and boost pressure under full throttle. This should chop perhaps a half-second off the current 7.8 second 0-to-60 time.

Things don’t end with just a power upgrade. Carlsson is also well known for tweaking Mercedes’ interiors, and adds several customization options to the G63 AMG 6x6. The impressive, diamond-quilted leather trim is replaced with custom Carlsson leather. Alcantra trim is also part of the setup. Carlsson claims any color is available for interior leather and trim. Special wood and carbon fiber are also part of the package, and These can also be color-customized to the individual buyer’s taste.

While a $600,000 vehicle such as this should — and will — bask its passengers in dribbling luxury, Carlsson wants to add even more to the lineup. Merino sheepskin floormats will provide Rolls-Royce levels of cushiness for passengers’ feet, and all-out suede will also be available for feet to rest on. Special, stainless-steel, blue-illuminated door sills bearing the Carlsson logo will greet occupants who make the considerable climb to enter this mammoth.

Other small interior touches include aluminum door-lock pins and foot-pedal pads. All in all, it should provide quite a luxurious experience, considering this is the most trucky truck in existence. Don’t expect this to drive like your garden-variety S550, however. It should — how couldn’t it be — cumbersome in city traffic, and a mess to deal with in parking lots. Take it off-road, however, and there is hardly anything with four wheels — let alone six — than can possibly keep up.

This may be one of those vehicles that we Americans can only dream about, as production has only been given the green light across the pond in Europe, and even over there, production numbers are limited. For the lucky few who can afford to drop over $600,000 on a vehicle, I suppose the extra cost that Carlsson will charge for even further customization shouldn’t be a problem.

The basis of this Carlsson dream machine, the G63 6 x 6 distills more than 30 years of off-road experience into a unique limited edition Mercedes-Benz G model. Its powerful engine and the special leather interior come from the AMG Performance Division, further underlining the G-Series models watchwords: Robust, functional, confident and assertive.

Carlsson’s motto is “The Best Way”, and this is both an incentive and a commitment for this company headquartered in Merzig, deep in the picturesque Saarland region of Southwest Germany. This is where Carlsson’s engineers developed the CK63 Performance Kit for the M157 bi-turbo V8 engine that powers this 3.85-ton behemoth.

The CK63 Performance Kit features an additional plug-and-play ECU between the factory unit and the motor that remaps the fuelling, ignition and boost on full throttle. As a result maximum power rises from the standard 400 kW/544 hp to 478 kW/650 hp, and is accompanied by a boost in peak torque from 760 to 900 Nm.

Carlsson’s in-house saddlery is a centre of automobile haute couture excellence, and is able to transform the cabin of any Mercedes model using Carlsson’s signature line leather and Alcantara, with trim inserts in wood or carbon-fibre. Any hue that is not available off the shelf can be specially ordered, so the only real limitation is the client’s imagination. The finishing touches for a special interior come in the form of floor mats made of soft suede or Merino sheepskin, stainless steel scuff plates bearing a blue illuminated Carlsson logo, and aluminium door-lock pins and foot-pedal pads.
