Rumors about the Mercedes SLC-Class started awhile back and for a short period of time, it was believed that the new SLS AMG would be called the SLC. Obviously, this is not the case, but hopes for an SLC are still not lost as Mercedes will indeed offer the SLC in an unexpected package.
The SLC-Class will actually be the baby brother of the SLS and will attack the likes of the Porsche 911 . Compared to the SLS, the future SLC will be lighter and slimmer with the use of plenty of carbon fiber and aluminum. In a shocking twist of SLS insult, the SLC will be devoid of gullwing doors.
The less dramatic specifications of the Mercedes SLC have also given way to a cheaper price tag compared to its brother. Expect to pay somewhere under €100,000 (about $145,000 at the current exchange rates).
As a reminder, the SLC name was first used as a market name for the Mercedes C107 from 1971 to 1981. These vehicles were sold in three different versions - 280, 380 and 500 SLC - and were powered by either an in-line-six engine or a V-8 for the top versions. The "SLC" name is expected to be revived sometime in 2014.
UPDATE 11/09/2011: British magazine, CAR, offers new details on the upcoming Mercedes SLC set to be released in 2015 - when the SLS goes out of production. The model will be offered in both coupe and roadster versions and, unlike previous rumors have stated, will only be offered with a 4.0-liter V-8 engine. The model will be built on the same aluminum-intensive engineering layout as the SLS, but it will feature a lighter curb weight, even better handling qualities and exceptional performance.
UPDATE 02/07/2012: Mercedes has finally green-lighted the upcoming SLC-Class, the company’s rival for the Porsche 911/991 . In an interview with AutoCar, AMG boss Ola Kallenius confirmed that the model will be offered in both coupe and roadster versions and will go on sale in 2013. Prices will start from £80,000 (about $125k at the current exchange rates). Expect it to be powered by a 500-horsepower twin-turbocharged 5.4-liter V-8 engine, not the previously rumored 4.0-liter engine. The SLC will sprint it up to a top speed of 180 mph.

Updated 01/31/2014: In an official press release announcing record sales for its AMG division, Mercedes announced that a new AMG sports car will be unveiled by the end of the year. No other details were released, except that, "later this year, AMG plans to enter a new segment with a sports car it has fully developed itself."

February 26, 2014 - Mercedes AMG GT begins winter testing
From the side, you can see a lot of the same features as the SLS-Class, especially the drastic cab-rearward format that includes a long hood and a stubby trunk.
On the other hand, the taillights will be slightly revised. They will extend further into the trunk lid and wrap further up the rear quarter panel. This is a much-needed revision, as the 2013 SLS AMG GT ’s taillights look way too small for the wide rump.
Ever since Mercedes announced plans to develop a new baby SLS, it also announced the new model will target high-end version from the Porsche 911 lineup, like the Turbo version.
Recently launched on the market, the new 911 Turbo is powered by a 3.8-liter six-cylinder engine with direct fuel injection delivering either 520 horsepower in the standard model or, 560 horsepower in the S version.
The 911 Turbo can sprint from 0 to 60 mph in just 3.2 seconds and goes up to a top speed of 197 mph.

If the rumored output turns out to be true, then the SLC will aim against the entire R8 lineup, with the top version going against the R8 V10.
Audi recently updated the entire R8 lineup with some minor changes on the exterior and the interior. Audi also made minor revisions to the V-10 engine, tuning it to 525 horsepower at 8,000 rpm and 390 pound-feet of twist at 6,500 rpm. The R8 V-10 will sprint from 0 to 60 mph in just 3.4 seconds and up to a top speed of 196 mph.
