Despite more stringent diesel emission regulations that go into effect in 2007, Mercedes-Benz will introduce a new diesel version of the E320 diesel this fall. Dubbed the E320 BlueTec, the new Mercedes sedan is powered by a squeaky clean diesel engine that will be available in all 50 states and should provide mileage well in excess of 30 mpg. The 3.0-liter V-6 makes 221 horsepower and gets a sophisticated particulate filter which will allow it to pass emission requirements. The E320 BlueTec will be followed by an ML320 BlueTec, a GL320 BlueTec, and a Jeep Grand Cherokee BlueTec.

Only Mercedes fanatics will notice the subtle exterior revisions to the 2007 E-class. The big news is under the skin. Conventional hydraulic brakes return to the E-class after a four-year hiatus (the 2003-06 E-class used troublesome and reviled electrohydraulic brakes), and the S-class’s 382-hp V-8 appears in the E550. Its official debut will come at the New York auto show in April.
