Mercedes cars

The Mercedes-Benz A45 AMG is the definition of a car whose looks don’t do justice to its performance capabilities. On the surface, the hatch looks nothing out of the ordinary, a predicament it finds itself in because it belongs to Merc’s entry-level A-Class segment.

But pop open the hood and that’s where all the magic happens. This bad-boy is AMG -certified insane, and even then, there’s still something about a hatch that already packs 360 horsepower and 332 pound-feet of torque that makes us think it has room for more ponies. That’s where mcchip-dkr comes into the picture.

The German tuner has a shiner on its hands for the A45 AMG, featuring comprehensive upgrade kits for the sports hatch’s 2.0-liter, four-cylinder turbocharged engine. The most basic one, if you can even call it that, involves optimizing the car’s software unit, increasing the output to an impressive 400 horsepower and 394 pound-feet of torque. If that doesn’t tickle your fancy enough, you can jump straight to the stage 2 kit, which, in addition to the software mods, also comes with new sports catalysts, resulting in another 20-pony increase to 420 horsepower and 394 pound-feet of torque.

You’d think that mcchip-dkr would be happy with that, right?

Not quite, because there’s also a stage 3 kit that includes turbocharger upgrades, software improvements, and those new sports catalysts. With all that equipment in tow, the A45 AMG will be blasting off to the tune of 450 horsepower and 405 pound-feet of torque, insane numbers that could potentially net the sports hatch a 0-to-60 mph time of less than four seconds to go with a top speed of around 170 mph.

The feathers are flying between Mercedes-Benz and Jaguar .

Two days after the British brand mocked its German counterpart’s Magic Body Control commercial with one of its own, Mercedes shot back with its own tasty zing, pumping up its Pre-Safe brake system by saying that "cat-like reflexes aren’t fast enough" and accompanying that with an image of an S-Class about to hit a jaguar if not for the beauty of its Pre-Safe brake system.

Subtle and brilliant at the same time, Mercedes.

More importantly, this light ribbing between these two brands harkens us back to a time when things like this happened far more often than they do now. Audi and BMW used to famously do this back in the day, but that rivalry has been muted in the past few years for one reason or another.

There’s nothing wrong with healthy competition, least of all when two companies engage with the silliness of nine-year olds.

It’s all harmless ribbing at the end of the day.

Technical partnerships between competing brands is becoming a key part of surviving the crazy ups and downs of the automotive realm. We’ve seen it with Toyota Toyota and Subaru Subaru , Toyota and BMW BMW , Renault Renault and Nissan, and so on. To date, we’ve had yet to see a splash of a deal between two luxury automakers, but that is now history, as Daimler, AMG and Aston Martin have entered an interesting quid pro quo deal.

Now, the partnership between Daimler and Aston Martin has been through the rumormill before. At one point a rumor also incorrectly claimed that Aston Martin’s future depended on this possible partnership with Daimler . Well, that turned out to be untrue, of course, but this deal will certainly speed things along for the British sports car builder.

Daimler will receive up to 5-percent, non-voting shares in Aston Martin without cash consideration in return for helping build bespoke V-8 engines that will see use future Aston Martin models. The goal of these new engines is to deliver high performance and improved fuel efficiency. The shares will be awarded in stages that correspond to the progress made in this project, and the shares will allow Daimler to observe Aston Martin operations, but they will not have any direct control over Aston.

Daimler will be the fourth company to own Aston Martin shares — the other three are Prime Wagon, Adeem Investment and Investindustrial. Unlike the other three, Daimler also plans to start an additional cooperation to supply of electric components, plus a few other areas of cooperation that will be announced in the future.

Mercedes-Benz S-Class

My, how things have changed for Mercedes-Benz .

It wasn’t that long ago when Mercedes was fretting about the S-Class ’ lagging sales in the face of strong competition from the BMW 7 Series and the Audi A8 . So Merc sought an answer, and like a self-fulfilling premonition, it found a solution in the next-generation S-Class.

With a new flagship model in its fleet, customers can’t seem to have enough of the new S-Class, so much so that the German automaker announced that its ramping up production of its new luxury ride.

The law of supply and demand at its finest, folks.

With demand that its predecessor never received in its final days, the new S-Class has compelled Mercedes to add an extra 74 minutes a day on its employees’ schedule, beginning in 2014 at the Sindelfingen assembly plant in Germany where the luxury sedan is built. And this extended time comes after Mercedes already increased work days by 30 minutes this year on top of adding four shifts on Saturdays.

Such is the consequence of a strong 2013 in which the company reported an 11-percent increase in sales from January to November compared to the same time a year ago. In fact, the company has sold 1.32 million units in the first 11 months of the year, almost the same number it managed to sell for the entirety of 2012.

One reason for that is the surprising popularity of the S-Class, a car that has reinvigorated Mercedes’ attempts to rule the luxury car market.

So far so good, Mercedes. Now all you have to do is retain that momentum as 2014 rolls around.

The Mercedes-Benz CLK63 AMG Black Series went into production in 2007. Back then, Mercedes built a limited number of these high-performance coupes, hence the price tag was not what you would call "affordable." It was expensive, had a terrible ride and it had no rear seats, which did not help when it came to practicality.

However, the CLK63 AMG Black Series was never built to be practical or even comfortable. What it did best was to put a grin on your face whenever the "go-go" pedal was pressed.

Our friendly, neighborhood gearhead, Jeremy Clarkson, owned one, and he loved it. The recipe for winning over JC from TopGear was simple. What Mercedes-Benz did, is take a standard CLK-Class coupe, send it across to AMG, who would shoehorn a 6.2-liter V-8 into the engine bay and do some adjustments to the suspension, etc.

Mercedes would then send the finished car to its "Black-Ops" department, which would throw away the rear axle and replace it with an "industrial-strength" axle and stick a note warning drivers that turning the traction control off can cause loss of life/property and hence isn’t advised. So, it was a car for crazy people, basically. And now folks at City Performance Center, Australia have turned it a mythical creature that makes unicorns seem abundant...

Back in September, Mercedes unveiled a very interesting commercial where it tried to highlight its "Magic Body Control" system, using a chicken of all things. It’s hard to grasp what Mercedes was shooting for with the commercial, but basically, it was showing that the chicken’s head stayed in the same position, regardless of how its body moved. The chicken’s head represented a Mercedes cabin, while the chicken’s body represented the suspension.

We had a nice chuckle at the commercial, but Jaguar obviously saw it fit to respond to this commercial with one of its own.By the looks of this commercial, Jaguar is not too concerned with "Magic Body Control;" it prefers a car to have "cat-like reflexes."

We think Jaguar got its point across pretty clearly in this one, what do you think?

If you do not remember it or happened to miss it, you can check out the Mercedes "Magic Body Control" commercial after the jump.

Celebrities like Jay Leno have the kind of influence and financial means that they can pretty much get whatever car they want. If you’ve seen his collection, you’ll know that nobody rolls in the auto collecting trade better than Leno.

But every so often, even Jay has to come to grips that there are just some cars that are completely out of reach. The Mercedes-Benz AMG Vision Gran Turismo is one of them.

Built exclusively to as a video game concept for Gran Turismo 6, the AMG Vision Gran Turismo is a beauty in more ways than one. It’s actually the second of Gran Turismo’s Vision Turismo lineup that will feature a whole bunch of concepts in the game.

Unlike the first concept that was announced — the BMW Vision Gran Turismo Concept — Mercedes actually built a real life 1:1 scale model of its concept, and low and behold, Jay Leno managed to get his hands on it. In the latest episode of Jay Leno’s Garage,

The first half of the episode actually has Jay talking about his 1,000-horsepower 1966 Oldsmobile Toronado before announcing that this ride has been added to Gran Turismo 6. Great, right?

Then, the Mercedes AMG Vision Gran Turismo shows up in his garage and on the rare instances that even Leno himself has to catch himself before talking, you know that he’s talking about something that in his own words, is a "pretty big deal".

Such is the effect of a car like the AMG Vision Gran Turismo. It turns avid auto nuts like Leno back into fan boys. And the best part about it? This is just one of many concepts that other brands will build for Gran Turismo 6.

(Cue the drooling).

Mercedes CLA-Class

What is everyone wishing for Christmas? By the looks of the sales reports, the answer is a Mercedes CLA , as they are becoming rather difficult to get a hold of at dealerships.

Of course this does not come as a big surprise to us, because we were sure the CLA would be a huge hit right from the moment we first laid eyes upon it. It features an elegant look — the best of all the Mercedes sedans in our opinion — offers a highly equipped interior, and a carries a very competitive base price of $29,900.

In a letter addressed to its dealers, Mercedes officials announced that from February to June 2014, they should expect “tight inventories and low days supply” because the car’s "overwhelming success." The company’s plant is at full capacity, but even so, Mercedes has problems satisfying all the requests.

Mercedes itself called the new CLA the best launch they had in the past 20 months, as it enjoyed "phenomenal success right out of the gate." In fact the new CLA is one of the models that helped Mercedes to pass BMW for the first time in a very long time — in the first 10 months of 2013, Mercedes sold 245,145 cars in the U.S., which was 5,000 more than BMW sold.

After a pretty cool tuning kit prepared for the BMW M5 , Vorsteiner turned its attention to another German luxury car, this time a Mercedes CLS63 AMG . As with pretty much all the other kits prepared by the tuner, the only updates offered for the CLS are limited to the exterior look.

To be completely honest with you, the CLS 63 AMG really doesn’t need any updates, as it comes fully loaded from the factory, including a 5.5-liter, V-8 engine that delivers a total of 518 horsepower and 516 pound-feet of torque. With the optional AMG Performance Pack, the power jumps to 550 horsepower and 590 pound-feet of torque.

The updates that Vorsteiner made to the exterior are limited to just three elements that give the CLS63 AMG a sportier look and to further improve the aerodynamic features of the four-door coupe .

Just in time for the holidays, Mercedes tuner extraordinaire, Carlsson , is offering a select few customers a chance to own a limited-edition timepiece. Called the SLK 340 chronograph, the same name of the one-off competition car built by Carlsson and presented at the Geneva Motor Show earlier this year, the 99-piece chronograph features a decadent of luxurious pieces befitting its exclusive label.

The watch comes with an ionized matte-black stainless-steel bracelet that features two contrasting gloss-black link highlights. One look at the face and you’ll instantly be reminded of its motorsports inspiration, further emphasized by a red second hand, subsidiary dials, and luminous points and hands, making for an ideal watch to have in your wrist when in the dark.

The tachymeter scale on the bezel and the date display enhance the versatile appeal of the watch while the 45 mm diameter case was machined from stainless steel and treated with the same durable ionized matte-black finish of the stainless steel bracelet.

As was mentioned, the Carlsson SLK 340 chronograph is limited to only 99 units at &euro299 a pop, which is a little over $400 based on current exchange rates.
