  Midsize cars offer a compromise between expensive luxury and cheap cars. They are comfortable and nicely equiped but they often look a bit dull and not real fast. But they will often be the best deal for the money conscious consumers.

The Honda Crosstour suffers from a little bit of an identity crisis. Is it a wagon or is it a crossover ? Honda classifies it as the latter, though, so that’s good enough for us.

In some ways, the Crosstour has the qualities of both car types yet it still behooves us to watch Honda peddle the vehicle when it already has a full lineup of models that customers to choose from.

But hey, give credit to the Japanese carmaker for venturing into the road less travelled. The Crosstour really is on a unique platform and to be fair to it, the vehicle does have some impressive qualities about it that should make for an intriguing purchase, even if you have to compromise on some things to make way for other things.

It’s confusing, we know, but then again, isn’t that the state of mind the Crosstour will leave you in?

It wasn’t that long ago when Hyundai was relegated as an afterthought company in the auto industry. Those times, though, are all but gone, because the Korean brand has more than become a player in the business, it’s actually established itself as a contender in some markets, including the compact SUV division.

Hyundai can largely thank the Santa Fe for that, and with a new look, new features and options to match, the 2014 Santa Fe Sport is ready to take on the world.

One of the Santa Fe Sport’s new goodies in its 2014 model year is the company’s new Blind Spot Detection system (BSD) and a rear parking assistance system. Those two technological upgrades alone are certainly worth more than the standard lip service.

That aside, the 2014 Santa Fe Sport also boasts a steady diet of upgrades, something Hyundai actively did to ensure that its prized SUV has been given the proper training to duke it out with its rival models.

The Hyundai Sonata is the flag-bearer for the Korean company. As its entry into the hotly contested midsize market, the Sonata could make or break the company. Sales have been strong for the Sonata for many years, but Hyundai is hoping that 2014 will be a breakout year for the sedan .

Thanks to a massive collection of changes and enhancements, the new 2014 Sonata wades into battle with the best suit of armor and weapons it has ever had at its disposal. The exterior design has seen updates, interior equipment has been upgraded, and interior refinement is at an all-time high.

Will this be enough to unseat the kings of the midsize market from Japan? The Accord , Altima and Camry have ruled this segment for decades, but Hyundai thinks it has a chance to break into the top three.

At the 2013 Los Angeles Auto Show , Subaru unveiled the Legacy concept — a preview of a production model set to be unveiled in 2014. Today the company has released the first teaser image of the all-new Legacy, which will be unveiled on February 6th at the 2014 Chicago Auto Show .

Few details were released about the new Legacy, but the teaser image reveals a sleeker, more coupe-like profile with a faster windshield rake and narrower A-pillars that create a sporty and modern sedan .

We’re not too sure how many design elements from the concept will be carried over into the production version, but we will really like seeing those cool hawk-eye headlights and taillights.

Under the hood, rumors suggest that the 2015 Legacy will get an improved version of Subaru’s famous boxer engine. We also expect to see Suby’s Symmetrical AWD (S-AWD) system and a CVT.

Diesels seem to be breaking their oil-burning, noisy, smokey stigmas that have haunted them for decades as more and more automakers are now offering clean diesels in their lineups. The latest huge influx of diesel models hails from Audi .

The German automaker, which is owned by Volkswagen Group, has announced a huge diesel push with 11 new TDI “Ultra” models, including the new A6 TDI Ultra detailed here. For starters, the "Ultra" in the TDI Ultra name is Audi’s designation for sustainable mobility that is fully available for everyday use — a long explanation for a TDI A6 that gets darn good fuel mileage while not hindering its common usability.

The heart of the matter is a 2.0-liter, four cylinder diesel that produces 190 horsepower and 295 pound-feet of torque that pushes the A6 from 0 to 60 mph in 8.2 seconds while achieving 53 mpg highway. With stats like that, we don’t mind hugging trees and filing up next to big rigs. Keeping all those trees happy, however, is Audi’s high efficiency SCR system that removes nitrogen oxides from the exhaust. The new system also lets the A6 pass the stringent Euro 6 emission standards with ease.

Backing the 2.0-liter TDI are two optional transmissions: a six-speed manual transmission is standard, followed by the optional seven-speed dual-clutch S tronic automatic. However, opting for the slap-paddle gearbox shoots the A6’s price up €2,250 — roughly $3,000 at the current exchange rates — making rowing your own gears sound evermore attractive.

Furthering the A6 ’s efficiency is the standard start-stop system and driver information center that helps keep track of good driving behavior.

Pricing for the A6 Avant TDI Ultra starts at €42,250 (about$57,000 at today’s exchange rates) and the A6 sedan TDI Ultra starts a little lower at €39,900 (around $54,000). Sales will begin sometime in the first quarter of 2014 and there are no plans yet to release any Ultra models in the U.S.

Mercedes brought out the C-Class in 1993 as a replacement for the 190E, and since then, it has sprouted three generations and has become the most important model in the company’s lineup. To keep the momentum going, Mercedes is working on the fourth-generation C-Class (internally called the BR205), and, after testing it for months, the company released today the first official details on the new model.

The car’s design lines are inspired by the F800 Concept Car displayed in Geneva two years ago, with a more marked front grille. This will obviously change the look of the C-Class, but won’t change it so severely as to present a completely new design.

Mercedes is set on keeping the essence of the model, but it added a certain degree of sportiness and dynamic so that it can compete with the Audi A4 and the BMW 3-Series .

The Mercedes C-Class Sedan will arrive in 2014 and six months later, it will be followed by a station wagon version. Approximately one year after that, the company will unveil the coupe and convertible versions as well.

For the U.S. market, the C-Class will be built in the Alabama plant alongside the GL-Class and ML-Class .

Volkswagen has always had some of the most hilarious commercials to run during the Super Bowl. For the 2014 Super Bowl XLVIII, Volkswagen wanted to show the world what happens when a Volkswagen hits 100,000 miles.

Developed by Argonaut — a San Francisco-based creative agency — the commercial shows a dad who explains to his daughter the importance of hitting 100,000 miles: "It’s a big deal. What if I told you every time a Volkswagen hits a 100,000 miles a German engineer gets his wings."

Of course, this does not mean that the German engineers actually enjoy what’s happening to them, as there are moments when these wings can be rather disturbing. You will understand what are we talking about by simply watching the commercial prepared for Super Bowl.

Hyundai is doing well these days. Its sedan lineup includes classy models ranging from bargain transportation to Lexus - and Mercedes -rivaling luxury. With a total of five separate, true-sedan designs, you’d be forgiven for forgetting about the middle-child Azera.

Flanked by the Elantra and Sonata below, and the Genesis and Equus above, the Azera hangs precariously somewhere in no-man’s-land looking for buyers craving just the right about of options, luxury, and price. Never mind it shares those same options and levels of luxury with the Sonata and Genesis – all packaged within a design that share nearly identical exterior and interior dimensions.

Perhaps that is why Hyundai has lowered the Azera’s asking price in 2014 while bumping up its standard features. Nevertheless, the Azera soldiers on another year with Hyundai’s second slowest sales numbers (only the $61,000 Equus Equus sold fewer) in hopes of building a market for itself. Don’t hear it wrong, the Azera is a great car with plenty of features and standard equipment making it competitive within its class. Its only major downfall is obscurity within its own lineup.

Diesel-powered cars are gaining ground in the United States lately with both Volkswagen and Audi introducing new models into the market. Mazda is looking to join the fray of consumer diesel model with its Mazda6 sedan.

If the idea of parking an oil-burning "zoom zoom" sedan in your garage sounds great you need to put on your hat of patience. Mazda has just announced that the Skyactiv-D equipped Mazda6 has been delayed.

The car has not been delayed due to emissions testing, rather Mazda feels the car doesn’t have quite the right driving dynamic. In its own words words the diesel Mazda6 needs to be tweaked to provide "the right balance between fuel-economy and Mazda-appropriate driving performance."

While it makes us a little sad that Mazda has delayed the introduction of this engine to the US market again, we can’t help but appreciate the desire to deliver the best-driving product they can.

With how much the gasoline-powered 2014 Mazda6 impressed us, it’s no surprise that Mazda is refusing to deliver a sub-par product.

Like a company beaming over its new prized model, Chrysler is putting a lot of its eggs in the basket of the new 200 sedan. That’s how much it hopes the redesigned model will get over with the public after mercifully ending the Sebring’s run.

So, with an all-new 200 rekindling new hope for Chrsyler, the American brand is set to unleash the full-court press on the new midsize sedan , and that includes an aftermarket program courtesy of Mopar.

The model that’s being touted in the Mopar guise is actually a 200S, and it features a Lunar White Pearl Tri-coat exterior. If fancy and classy can go together, this color certainly does a good job at highlighting the 200’s impressive new looks.

Not only that, Mopar’s accessory list for the 200S also includes a host of exterior and interior goodies, highlighted by a graphics package, a bicycle-hitch receiver, white leather seats, bronze contrast stitching, Autonet WIFI and ambient lighting, among a smorgasbord of new digs, all of which you can check out after the jump.

No performance upgrades were given to the Mopar-tuned 200S, but considering how Chrysler is trying to establish the 200 as the new "face" of its lineup, keeping it in its current mechanical guise — a 3.6-liter Pentastar V-6 engine that produces 295 horsepower and 355 lb-ft of torque — is important to elucidate the 200’s appeal to the public.
