Mitsubishi brings the Outlander GT Protoype to the 2009 South Florida International Auto Show
 
The Japanese performance minded automaker Mitsubishi showed off a more aggressive crossover model back in New York earlier this year, however the EVO faced Outlander GT Prototype still manages to impress here in Miami. There is something about the squinting headlights ability to stare you down just like the 300 HP turbocharged all wheel drive Lancer Evolution X can despite the 230 HP V6 that makes this slightly larger CUV quite an attractive option for a commuter vehicle. 2009 Mitsubishi Outlander SE AWD
Small SUVs play an interesting role. They must be able to hold at least five people, fit in tight parking spaces, carry a Home Depot haul, and sometimes even go off-road. Yes, most people usually forget about that last one when buying an urban SUV. So we decided that we would reintroduce the idea of an SUV made for the off-road with our 2009 Mitsubishi Outlander SE AWD tester. We made sure it was a 4x4 so we could follow the road less traveled… at least that’s what we planned. While the Outlander was in our fleet, we went looking for the hills and the mud, but that just usually made us late for soccer practice. Mitsubishi’s Outlander is already based on the Lancer sedan, and now Mitsubishi has gone one step further to make an Outlander that looks like an Evo X.  The Outlander GT Prototype made its at the New York Auto Show. The transformation into an Evo tall wagon includes the Evo’s "jet fighter" grille as well as reshaped front bumper, side mirrors, fenders and hood. To help keep it on the road, the Outlander GT will also use the Evo’s Super-All-Wheel-Control System. Where the comparison the the Evo ends is the engine. The Evo X has a 2.0-liter four cylinder with a huge turbo that makes 291 hp. The Outlander GT features the 3.0-liter V6 already in use in the Outlander XLS. Mitsubishi wants to give it’s Outlander mini-SUV some street cred and is going to debuit what will likely look a Evo X wagon on steroids. The Outlander GT Prototype will make its debut later this week at the New York Auto Show. Mitsu says the styling will iclude plenty of elements from the Evo including the “Jet-Fighter” grille and Super-All-Wheel-Control System. Unlike the Evo, the Outlander GT will not get a 291 hp four cylinder engine turborcharged within an inch of its life. Instead the GT is going for more fuel efficient diggs. It will get a version of the 3.0-liter SOHC MIVEC V6 already in use on the Outlander, but this one will have added gas saving technology. Press release after the jump. The Mitsubishi Concept cX made its world debut last year at the Frankfurt Motor Show. At that time the company announced the concept is the preview version of a future model. Today Mitsubishi confirmed this model is the future baby Outlander that will be launched in 2009. The Concept cX is powered by a 1.8-litre Clean Diesel DOHC 16 valve 4 cylinder engine that delivers 100 kW (136 ps) @ 4,000 rpm and 280 Nm @ 2,000 rpm. It features a variable geometry (VG) turbocharger – to generate optimum boost pressure for all engine loads – as well as DPF (Diesel Particulate Filter) and DOC (Diesel Oxidation Catalyst). Mitsubishi today published the pricing guide for the all new 2008 Outander. Prices start from $19,990 for the Outlander ES 2WD and go up to $25,110 for the Outlander XLS 4WD. Full story
